I wouldn't doubt it seeing that my 40D got more use then my 1D3 in wildlife shooting. But I have also heard that the 1d4 is not really worth the jump. Better wait till the 1d5 comes out.

1DIII I find too loud for alot of wildlife, shutter slap is like church bells compared to the 7D's whispering shutter ;) Yes i can shoot stealth mode but not at decent FPS.

Yeah I get that a lot, also the better beamer flash will startle them. But the 1D3 does have a silent shutter mode but it is only single shot and not burst. I find it help full when multiple shots are not needed. The shutter sound is also quieter when shooting in live mode as well.

Yea, You can't even AF in live view on the 1D3 only MF. A good feature on the 1D4 I think. I know the 5D2 does and I even get the 5D2 to AF in Live view with the 2xTC @ f8, it's freaking awesome and the shots is spot on, go figure.

Nice Steve. Still in Florida. I will be in Myrtle Beach again this year and will visit the Huntington Beach again. This time I plan to walk out to the the Jetti to see what I can capture out there. I plan to purchase a backpack to hike out there (don't want to walk the beach for 1 mile with my rig over my shoulders). I also will go to the nature center so that I can get some more (better) shots of the Painted Bunting.

Yeah I tried this out and it works but you need to be a god enough distance, shooting far a far is not suggested when stacking a 1.4 and 2x TCs. Also the nice part is that the 1series will still AF cause the 2xtc read and set it at f8. A nice clean path between you and the subject will make for a nice image, but MF in live view might be the best option and a standing still subject is even better. Also good light helps as always.

How difficult was it to shoot soccer with the 500mm IS?

dioladetus
20th of May 2011 (Fri), 16:07
I have usually been using the 300 2.8 IS, and that is a lot easier by all means. Using the 500 is not hard, but you miss more shots because of the distance/framing. I think its fun to use the 500, the worst downside is f/4 though.. I definately prefer f/2.8

DITO!!! I shot my cousin high school soccer games with the 500 and the 1d3 I found it hard to be on point, then I switch bodies to the 5D2 and it gave me more room but still tight, that's when I said the 300mm f2.8 would kick arse. Now i'm saving up for one. ;)

Here is the result of the 500mmand soccer.

and the 5D2 f4 iso800
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5060/5449213617_ae3f481bc4_o.jpg

The perfect lens would be the 400mm or the 300mm, but the 500mm make you work for the shots. even if you shoot from the far out side point as possible. I also took the 70-200 f.28L IS and it came in handy.

Excellent Job Neil. Have you tried to use AF while In live view? I know I can get my 5D2 to focus with the Canon 2xTC on the 500mm @ f8 while in live view on C1. I set it up so that C1 was my video settings 1/30th shutter, f13, iso100, manual exposure and the liveview setting are Still+Movie, movie display, grid display 2, mode 1 30sec metering AF mode Live mode on 1080 24fps. When ever I need to focus on a stationary subject with the 2xTC I switch to C1 focus then go back to AV or TV or M and it is spot on.

But the oddest thing is that I can't do it while in M mode in live view, must of been the Live mode focusing setting fr the movie that enables it to AF. But warning it is SUPER SLOW!

Dont blame you on that sound precaution !

Some folks will try some inventive camouflage techniques to get nice horizontal plane shots. A buddy of mine uses a twin bed mattress in a 12ft. flat bottom boat to lay down in and he does get some remarkable close captures sneaking up on mid lake & shoreline species with his 500/f4 IS.

2 words. Fill. Flash. ;)

My question would be, is tripod the only option when it comes down to stabilizing this lens when using fill flash due to sync speed or is there something Im missing? HSS not included...

500L meets time trialing...:) The lens won't work if the weather is too humid with high UV index. The long shooting distance required for cycling would render the lens useless. Today's weather is nice but at times the sun was too strong. You can see heat waves coming off the ground.

Shot with a lowly 30D.

My question would be, is tripod the only option when it comes down to stabilizing this lens when using fill flash due to sync speed or is there something Im missing? HSS not included...

Usually whenever I use fill flash I am shooting in manual mode so I can control the shutter speed. Cause in AV mode you may run into shooting at like 1/80th or a low shutter speed. So then stabilizing with a tripod or even a monopod would work.

But if the shutter speed in AV mode is is anywhere from 400+ I will engage HSS on the flash and just shoot in AV mode, if the shutter speed is too high then I might increase the exposure bias to lower the shutter speed in order to get the fill flash in.

You can also use a rock, a tree branch, sometimes I sit on the ground with my knees in front of me and use a knee to rest the lens collar on and shoot. Even a tree branch will work, you just need something to sit solid on for a few seconds anything crazy.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Andrew, hope you're doing well buddy.

Jay, that's about as nice a compliment a bird shooter could receive. I do work to capture special moments that say a little something about the birds or convey their interactions best for that day. It doesn't always work out that way but that's what I look for in my selection process. I definitely wouldn't say you have a long way to go, I'm a big fan or your work and I can learn a lot from what you do.

Cicero, thanks. I'm curious to what species the first bird above is. It's marked like a Nightjar (although I know it's not one). Incredible bark-like camo.

Last few sets of birds (planes included) are some nice captures

Visited the Osprey family. Here's pappa. The 2x was a little too much, but he came in from nowhere and surprised me while I was trying to capture some tight closeup of the little ones and I was standing on a very narrow boat dock that's about the width of the tripod spread, so no quick, sudden movements or I'd be doing some fishing. I had to quickly point the lens and fire off some shots.
