Woke up last nnight confused? I pulled the bid on the 600mm. Started thinking about what people were saying about weight factor etc? Also started to give it somethought about the 400mm 2.8L IS and with it's 2.8 factor, thought it would be a pretty well rounded lens adding a 2X Ext II onto it.

I know the next question would be,what are you gong to use it for. Mainly using it for nature shooting, race track stuff and I like to shoot at the Zoo. However I would not mind trying my hand at shooting high school foot ball etc. In front of my house is 2 large football fields.

Any suggestions from my fellow long lens shooters would be great. The cost factor on the 400mm 2.8L IS is around $6,000.00 5 yrs old and is very clean, with even very little tri-pod mount wear.

Thank you in advance

Although the 400mm f2.8LIS MK I is a SICK lens, coupled with a 2xTC will work decently, but the weight factor on that lens is even more then the 600mmf4L IS MK I. I would go with the 500mm or Save up some more and try to get the new 600mmF4LIS MK II when it is released, the weight on the new 600mm is less than the current 500mm out right now. Also the new 400mm f2.8LIS MK II will be significantly lighter as well, making it much more suitable for handheld purposes. As for the 300mm route, the 300mmf2.8LIS MK I is a super sharp lens coupled with a 1.4xTC it kicks ass but the 2xTC once again it is ok, easily handheldable fast and did I mention sharp!!!

Here's my opinion -

You won't use it at a zoo. In fact you won't use a 500/4, 600/4, or 400/2.8 at a zoo. They're way too big. WAY too big.

This guy bumped his head!!! LOL

Here you go LA Zoo at 500mm.

And I had to crop a touch.

Way too long? I had to crop most of the shots. Just goes to prove the 500mm is not way too long for the zoo, even the 600mm would work as well. But Each zoo is different and in CERTAIN cases it might be tight, ;) Never say its too long!!!

Just My Honest Opinion with some proof.

The 600 & 400 weigh almost the same....

I'll have to keep in mind that the 500 works well at LA. Do they have any problems with tripods or monopods?

Hollywoodgt

Yes I have monopod and tri pod, but would probably have to upgrade the monopod. As far as bodies I'm shooting with aT2I, but plan on getting a 2nd camera soon. Maybe a
5D MK II or a 1D KK III not sure yet.

Someone posted the shoots at the Zoo, I like the close up stuff and jsut can't do that with the 70-200 in a lot of spaces at the zoo......more reach needed.

Once again thank you for the imput

Love these zoo shots, Sevan.

500mm too long for a zoo? Yes, it's always a mistake to tell others what will or won't work...it's all about one's own skill and imagination, not other's preconceived ideas.

This is the monopod I picked up for the 500mm for motorsports shooting. It works extremely well. It is a bit heavy but easyli cured that by unscrewing the bottom and removing the 3 steel rods for the crappy tri-pod support. Once I removed those, it was light! I even use it now and then with the Gimbal head and the 500mm for wildlife shooting.

Sevan you're confused. I didn't say too long. I said too big. If going to the zoo with a 25" lens/camera combo is your gig then go for it. I'll pack something else, though.

How am I back peddling? I said its too big. Its too big. I guess you guys have different zoo's than me (Philadelphia, Cape May, NYC) I have never seen anyone use more than a 70-200 or a 100-400. Maybe I go to small zoos. Back peddling - how? I said its too big. Literally. Someone thought I said "too long" in zoom.

Actually the Philly Zoo (and I've been there) is a cracker box compared to Phoenix, Denver or San Diego.

I don't care what you said, I know what you meant. You have no experience with the 500 but you felt the need to butt in and bang on those who own it. Way to much of this going on lately.

Big, Long, same thing man. As long as the zoo allows it I will take it, and when ever I do go to the Zoo I leave the hood off reducing the overall length by about 7"wow that's a lot!!! You can take what you please, as long as you get the shots that satisfy your needs then WHO THE HELL CARES!!! Cheers, it is worth having with you especially for birds but a lot of the big stuff is in usable range (except during the day when heat and haze play with your mind nad all your shots are soft whatever lens you lugged!) :) Not to say a zoom is not needed, 100-400 was perfect 2nd lens!

@ Mike, great King fisher shots. Those guys are little PITAs to shoot, fast and never allow you to get near them. That's why I set up a blind near a one of the many perches they have and get this type of shot.

Sevan, for some reason I haven't had much luck the couple of times I've tried a blind but this spot has some well placed brush/trees that allows for a good view of this dead tree over a creek. I wish this spot was closer because I'd love to try and get a shot of them landing on a perch like yours.

Thanks! It's definitively the airshow lens for sure! Some shots were not available due to the focal lenght but other than that it performs amazing. My back is a bit sore now though.

I need to stay out of here...

I like to shoot from a kayak so I've been looking at the 400 DO because tripod use doesn't seem ideal to me at this point, but I love the subject isolation and amazing IQ this lens seems to produce consistently.

You learn to anticipate the action and to see alternative framing because you don't have the "luxury" of re-framing on the fly like you can with a zoom.

I personally think your watermark is better than your photography, LMAO. Superb shots Steve, well done. As for the watermark, I like it, a change in pace. But maybe try a tiny touch smaller in the size, it looks a little to dominant.

The reason I asked, was because a few years ago, this lady at Safeway wanted a birthday cake for her little boy to be decorated with the Superman logo, and the baker told her that they couldn't do it because it was copyrighted.

I thought to myself, we're here in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, if the MOTHER doesn't tell anyone, and you, the BAKER don't tell anyone, WHO IN THE ***K is going to know? ESP if NO ONE TELLS D.C. COMICS?!!

But they wouldn't do it.

Need a little help..

Having some issues with my 500.. Been to Canon service twice. The first time was for a clean and check up sine I was taking my body in for some work. I received it back and the focus was jumping around. So I took it back the next week.

After 3 days went to pick it up and the focus was better and report said they replaced the "IS" and restored everything back to original specs...

I can hear the IS spool up when I stick my ear to the lens. But I cannot see any stabilization in the viewfinder. I like to handhold the 500 so the IS is helpful. Before I took it in for a cleaning I could see the image stabilize in the viewfinder or at least thats what I remember..

Can you all tell if the IS is working in your 500's? and how so.. The trip to Canon is long and I'm tired of going back and forth but will if clearly the IS is not working. I have been shooting for many years and I have tried everything I can think of..

Any input or help would be grateful.

I have limited experience with it, but I remember the IS in the viewfinder "engaging" and the scene seems to float a bit. Once IS stops, the viewfinder looks static again if that makes sense.

Ironic, the thread I started I was asking if anyone had sent their lens to Canon for a clean and check and wanted to know what they did and was it worth it. What did Canon clean and check service consist of?

kurt does it not show in the viewfinder if you were to move the lens kind of fast. It could be the "newer" IS is just not showing it's age as the old one. I really don't notice or pay to much attention to the IS in the viewfinder, but I d hear rolling though.

With my 70-200 and 24-105 I don't even notice it in the viewfinder or again so used to it that I don't notice it.

I sent mine in to Canon Irvine just last year and it works fine, the IS when activated does make a slight start up and stopping sound but nothing loud, you can hear it when it is quite around you. But you do see the image stabilize in the viewfinder. If you hear the IS spool the image should stabilize, have you tried it mounted on a tripod? You should see it on a tripod as well, the image might move.

So it may be working? I do hear it spool up and off.. I've tried it on a tripod and off.. I'm just not noticing anything, but before I could shoot a pigon at 125/th of a second handheld and get pin sharp results.. Not i'm at 2000/th of a second and i'm not happy..

Al, when I got it back the first time I was livid... I had to MA all over again, and my focus was off.. I'd hit the shutter to start the AF and the image would jump like you couldn't imagine.. So back I shelp to Canon and they say "opps" were not talking a 100.00 lens here.. So back I go in three days to get it and they replace the whole IS systems, which means they took apart my whole lens to get to it.. Now I'm back to trying to get the MA right and I can't.. I'm back focusing and having difficulty getting her locked in.. Pissing me off big time..

I called CPS and they just say bring it in to check it.. I would have thought there was a way to notice the IS work? You cannot notice anything in the VF move or in live view... Do I make the trip to Canon and take another chance? Or beleive it is working? I need to meet someone that has a 500 so I can compare..

I'm going to a meet up at Bombay Hook NWR next Saturday I hope someone has a 500 I can look at..

Thanks for your reply Al..

Kurt, I'd go there and make sure to demonstrate the issue with one of the techs so they know exactly the problem. I'd be pushy if need be to see and talk to the tech. Like you said it's not a 100mm lens.
At 1/2000th and not sharp is definitely a problem, but maybe not an IS problem, but a focusing problem.

The 500 I used wasn't very sharp as I thought it would be at fast shutter speeds. I couldn't get a non blurry shot at 1/100 either, dunno if the IS was working well or not. Then again I was using a Rebel.

thats...pretty much the best aviation photo I've ever seen.

Actually, that would look great on a wall, I'm going to bookmark it for next time I have some spare cash.

Yes, that is awesome!

I just placed an order for the 500mm f4 and got busted by B&H as they called the house to confirm my order (wife picked up)!

I don't get in here very often but when I do I like to look back on what I've missed since my last post. Like always, I've missed a slew of incredible images. Neil, Andrew and Jay you gents continue to impress the heck out of me.

Jay, those two last shots are like no aviation shots I've ever seen, truly remarkable. The biplane shot even forms a "Crosswinds" C. If those aren't marketable shots I don't know what is.

Here's a few of my recent efforts from the neighborhood.
