Florida rocks! Travelling with the 500 is light, if I had the 600 it might be different though.

Jay, looks like you are at the same height as the plane...

Bird photography falls in Wildlife photography. Plus "Birding" is what those old geezer do with binoculars and scopes. They talk all day about birds they possibly saw or heard. We take pictures as proof. Talk is cheap! LMFAO!!!

I guess not Neil, that's the down fall of wildlife photography, you can wait it out for hours for nothing or for one single shot that;s worth it.

Heh, I find the best way to see interesting wildlife is not have a camera or required lens with you. That is when unusual criters or birds parade in front of you. ;)

I am in the market for a 500L/600L. I was wondering the current used price for a good condition 500L IS is.
Would a 500L fit into a Pelican 1510 with two 1D bodies and three other primes? If not, what Pelican do you recommend?
The reason that I am interested in the 1510 because it is considered a carry on and I need that ability for my 12 month stay in the Kalahari Desert this year to photograph Meerkats.

 They also seem to somehow know the MFD of whatever lens you do have mounted on the camera, and more often then not, they stay just a bit CLOSER to you than the MFD, just to make things that much more difficult to get a shot.

A good condition 500 f4 L MK I would probably be around 5,500 - 6k don't be surprised people can get nearly what they paid for it years and years ago, just cause the newer ones are way more, same thing happened with the 400L f2.8 MK I my friend bought his for 5k a long time ago and now could easily sell it for 6,500.

Meerkats ROCK!!!

When you are photographing these jets where are you focusing? Or is the DOF so great that it is not a problem. I would assume that a jet going that fast would be hard to pick a spot i.e. pilot.

f6.7 was the f-stop, my guess would be the focus point was either on the cockpit area of the middle of the plane. Finding and even point in the middle of DOF would be a good starting point.

By putting the FP on the cockpit, now anything in the same line as the cockpit is in the same DOF area, IE the body of the jet, the rear wing the missile under the cockpit etc, also the distance from you to the subject is key, Jay had a 1.4xTC on so I am assuming he was a good distance, even at f5.6 he would of achieved the same out come. f8 to f11 would of been ideal. on anything flying either a bird or a airplane f7.1-f8 is prime up to f13 then your beyond useless maybe f16 in a blue moon.

Single Point Servo AF and I try to just shoot "center mass"

Distances involved pretty much negate any DOF issues.

I'm a complete newbie with this lens and I intend making my airshow baptism of fire with it in a weeks time (UK weather permitting!)
In the past I've only ever used a 100-400 for this but I no longer have that lens.

My question is whether to use it hand-held or on a tripod/gimbal. I don't find it that hard to use "freestyle" but looking at some of the exif details on here I'm staggered at the low shutter speeds used.
I do know that these have to used to capture propeller blur but I was thinking of switching to the much lighter 400 5.6L for the vintage stuff.

BTW that darter is mind-blowing even among all the other mind-blowing examples in this thread!

Nighthound

Incredible work Andrew, the dragonfly is especially amazing. I have the MK II as my backup to the MK IV. If I could I'd move the 5D III into that slot. A friend has the 5D III and the 500 matchup and it really is a match to be reckoned with.

While I don't shoot the hard-winged type birds, I would always suggest that flight work be done hand held. While a good gimbal can be silky smooth in movement it's still restricting. With practice the 500 is very manageable and I'm not a big guy so if I can do it I would think that most could do the same. You'll develop a shoot and rest style to minimize fatigue/shake. The 400 would be an all-day hand holdable lens in my book.

What Steve said, in flight no matter what it is is better hand held, you get the free motion of field with your entire upper body. With a tripod you are pivoting off of one point like you torso, BUT no lateral movement is available. You will quickly hit you limit and find yourself leaning around the tripod legs just to track the subject.

Here is a suggestion for hand holding. Take the 500mm neck strap and the camera neck strap and set them bot to the same length. Meaning when you hold the lens strap and the neck strap they both have equal tension on them. Then you can throw both of them around your neck or your shoulder and grab the lens and camera and pan, shoot then rest. This way you can move around freely. I shoot birds all day like this no problem, with the occasional rest for a few minutes on the neck and shoulders.

As for the shutter speed I see no deed to go below 1/100th at max even on a prop plane you will get prop movement. If it is a jet plane then unless there is heavy puffy clouds of a busy BG you really wont see the difference between a 1/100th or 1/60th shot unless they have a smoke trail or a static object in the BG. Just play along with it on the fly and try many different setups till you find your comfort zone.

Low shutter speed + the 500m + hand holding takes practice, and lots of it. Just shooting the 500mm at a high shutter is a task at the beginning, you need to learn the curve of this beast.

Thanks for the tips Nighthound and Sevan, I'll leave the tripod in the cupboard. Something less to carry especially as I wont have my bearer with me as she's working that day:).

Interesting stuff about the lens/camera strap Sevan. I use an Optech strap on the camera body when handling this lens simply to avoid the whole rig slipping out of my hands and crashing to the ground.

I haven't yet put the lens strap on but someone has suggested using the Optech tripod strap on the lens as that's more comfortable. I've got one coming from Amazon.

As always practice practice, here goes!

^Great first shots Travis! The duckling in #2 is sweet. What do you like better about the 500mm vs 100-400mm? Just sharper/faster/faster-focusing? Seems like the high-end Canon super telephotos deliver incredible color and clarity. I'd love to get one.

Well I thought my 100-400 was pretty sharp but when compared to the 500 I don't think so. It's in another league. I really liked the 100-400 with my 1d IIn but I'm finding it difficult to get nice clean shots out of my 7d with it. I have no idea why. I've went through all the MA adjustments and 0 turned out to be the sharpest. Really wish I could get it figured out as it's a really versatile lens.

The focusing is definetly faster which is great. I always struggled with birds in flight with the 100-400(especially small birds) but I've already had a way better success rate with the 500. Not sure if that's entirely the faster focusing or what but I find it easier.

One this I don't like about the 100-400 is that I find it kind of a pain to carry. I use a hand strap and after a while my hand gets sore and it's harder to switch hands to carry. The 500 although being heavier I find the tripod foot fairly comfy to carry with either hand. Sure it gets heavy as well but being able to switch hands helps me out. If the 100-400 had a bigger tripod foot to hold onto it would be great!

I'm a smaller guy at 5'6" and 155lbs 26yrs old but I don't struggle very much hand holding the lens. That was my biggest concern as I'm really not a tripod kind of guy. Although I'm thinking a monopod would be nice for extended sessions.

I hope this helps.

Sure does, thanks! You should definitely get a monopod. I recently got a full package deal from RRS and it's awesome. Their monopod head is fantastic and together with their monopod the whole thing is very mobile, sturdy, lightweight, and fun to use. They're really expensive, but great glass deserves a great mount.

god damnit, i miss my 500 so much :( in my opinion, the 500 F4 is simply the best lens in Canon's lineup if you are into nature and wildlife. 600 too bulky, 800 not as flexible. of course the new 600 II is a fine option but at 12k, they can keep it. oh well, time to search for a used 500 and hope for a good price.

I hate you so much right now, why did you have to rub it in like that :( that was such a mistake to sell it, now I have to pay 1000+ more for the same exact lens. The funny thing is that when I switched to Nikon back then, everybody told me that I am an idiot because Nikon charges way too much for super teles and now Canon charges exactly the same. Oh well, I will keep waiting for a good deal and snatch one up if I find one for leas than 6k

That post is from a few years ago when lenses weren't prices like cars. Back then 5k for 500 f4 was quite common since they went for 5500 new. Now companies think (well they can) that they can charge whatever they want for lenses since people will buy them anyway. 12k for 600mm f4, are you freaking kidding me? You want to tell me that it cost the same to produce a lens as it does to produce a complete Kia or Honda fit?

That lens is one heavy beast, plus sigmas version of IS is not that great. 'Please allow 5sec for IS to fully stabilize.' WTF!? In 5sec my subject is long gone, I owned a 150-500 and the IS blew rocks compared to the Canon, Canon was super fast while the sigma was super slow. But hey that's my opinion. The lens is nice and in the right hands can produce good images but not enough to compete with canons long lens line. I think Canon has the Long lens line pinned in the market, the only other mfg I would go with would be Zeiss, and they are basically custom clientele with deep pockets. You think canon is bad with the $12k 600mm f4.......................

Three years ago I had the 500 itch so bad that I couldn't stand it. Buying new at $6k was a painful leap to make at the time but I was growing weaker by the day. A good friend presented me with the following offer:

Canon 500L (f4): Like new with hard case(never used), no signs of paint wear
Camo Lens Coat
Canon 1.4X II TC: Like new
Canon 2.0X II TC
Lowepro 600W Backpack (new)
Canon 1D Mark II: Like new, 6,000 clicks, no signs of wear
Canon 20D with grip: Essentially new in box, less than 200 clicks

Not a bad package at all and considering I was shooting with the 100-400L, 5D classic and 20D at the time so it would be a nice upgrade from lens hood to LCD. I wasn't looking to upgrade to a 1D body but that was another carrot dangling that sounded very intriguing. So for $6k I could have the upgrade with some nice extras. I thought about it for a nanosecond and judging by the market today and the new pricing I feel I made a good decision. I can't say just how amazing the new 600L II will be (pretty good idea though) but I think my 500L has some years left in it and I still get the same "wow" from the lens that I did the first time three years ago. I guess the classics maintain that effect on us. I have to give some props to the 1D MK II as well, it's a solid work horse and really nice to have as a back up.

Thanks very much. I was impressed with the Mark II then and still am. Sure it has it's faults but most do.

It doesn't take long for technology to zap the value out of yesterday's hot items. There are certain stars in manufacturers lineups through the years that seem to pass the test of time. The 500L (f4) and the 1D MK II fall into that category IMO.

Well, this just about sums up the terrible weather we're having in the UK right now.
I went to Royal Naval Air Service show at Yeovilton in Somerset last Saturday and it was dark grey cloud all the time, still it was the first time I used the 500mm at an air show.

Hand-holding was the easy bit, carrying everything from the car park (600AW bag with 1DIV, 500mm and 400mm f5.6 lenses and binoculars, my lunch and a chair!) was the hard bit.

Yes the shots are awesome!

Word of advice, don't mug anyone with a 500mm or larger lens, I pack heat when i'm out in the field by myself in a shady area. ;) A little bear spray along with it doesn't hurt also. The mace hangin from my vest is a clear sign, but then the Knife in my vest side pocket is handy as well. :)

You guys do this lens proud. So many great shots, exceptional work everyone.

Tomorrow marks one month since my heart surgery, finally starting to get my energy back. The heat in the deep south isn't helping me get back in the swing of things but I have managed to get out in the last couple of weeks. The second Reddish Egret shot was taken recently, the others were taken between last year and the spring of this year. All shots hand held.

Thanks Kevin. I've been taking it slow, but if I'm lookin' I'm clickin'. It's a sickness, I know.

Sorry to hear about your complications from the surgery. I hope you're on the mend now. I'll be taking it slow and steady for a while, maybe the 100 degree temps will drop down to a tolerable level soon.

Sevan, excellent track shot. Very cool background car movement.

Guys, you do wonders with this lens, fantastic everyone!
Steve, I wish you a speedy full recovery :)

Here is a duck chasing off frogs, that was enjoying the sun on the piece of wood in the lake. Hefty crop.
