No. I couldn't fit the bird in the frame. I was really close. I added a 12mm extension tube. I could crop the head to the mid body to give a portrait feel to it. He is supposed to be hiding and so I wasn't supposed to see the whole body. :)

Great shots. I am working from home today, waiting for the big brown truck. I bought a used one from Andy Biggs (see andybiggs.com for some good Africa images) and can't wait to shoot. I am charging batteries and have the tripod out and ready. First shots will be a mere bird feeder/backyard, set, but I am still excited to do this.
Where is that darn truck?

I now see why people go all out on the extras for this fine lens. Unfortunately I had to have mine replaced as it had very inconsistent focus issues. The replacement got delayed by the holidays and it not being something that is usually kept more than one of in stock so I just got the replacement today...
While it was gone I got the Sidekick and I have to say it is a little funky to get balanced but once you do WOW. I can only imagine how cool the full Wimberley head is.
Here's couple of snaps of my rig... Now I just need to get off the Graveyard Shift and take some pictures with it or at least a little more daylight when I get up in the afternoon.
Forgive the quality I wanted to take them with the body on so I used my P&S... At least its a Canon :-)

I got a Sidekick but my ballhead does not have independent lock on both x and y axis. My only cost saving option is to get a full gimbal head. The Wimberly is too expensive for me. My other cheaper option is the Jobu Design Black Widow HD. Is $120 less than the Wimberly version. It works the same and maybe not as smooth. I really need to stop spending money right now...:o The hidden cost for this lens is the support system...

UPS and I had a love hate affair today, Web site showed my lens was out for delivery starting at 5 am. this morning. At 4:40 pm and still no brown truck so I called 800 number. They promised I would get a call from local within ah hour. At 6 I called 800 and said what is up. they said i would get a call in 30 minutes, sent in urgent request. At 7 I got a call. they claim their outbound phones were out all day. sure. Further, all trucks in my area had returned and I would not get a delivery today.
They weren't sure where my box was, but it wasn't lost. Hmmm, when i can't find something I am in posession of, I call that lost. I had been told so asked: items insured over $5000 are hand handed off with signature to either the truck or within a cage. Okay, where is my lens, they have the chain of custody signatues. manager at UPS - I am not sure, but it is not lost. Okay, I have worked from home today, can't tomorrow so what to do. Choices: stay home and call tomorrow. If we load it on a truck then it is found (how do you find something not lost??) or come by UPS depot in next 3 days. Not acceptable answers, let me speak to a manager. I am speaking to a manager. This is service? I am told that if I have a complaint, I can call the 800 number. About now, I am wishing I had recorded this joke. So I summarize: It will not be delivered today, because trucks to my area have all returned to base. You don't know where it is, but it is not lost. It will probably be loaded on truck tomorrow and you want me to risk my job waiting another day. if I am not happy, my recourse is to call the 800 number? yes.
8:30, I go out for some quick groceries. coming home, I see a UPS truck flying out of my neighborhood. I flag him down. Yep, he was at my house. Sorry, base told him to run out with this one delivery. he had left it on my porch .... without the required signature. Hmmmm. So I get home and there is my lens. Box is in great shape, so I take it inside. The brown truck pulls up in front of the house. Sorry, he does need a signature. his mistake. Will I please sigh. :) about this time, I started to say "what package" and file for insurance .... but I am an ok guy, so I sign.
I have my lens. It's dark outside so I can't play. So I am photographing a clock over in the kitchen 20 feet away tonight just to play with my toy. Maybe tomorrow i will get a duck to shoot.

Wow your story started to sound like mine... When I got my lens originally it took one day for me to get it. I sent it back to them to have it replaced and it took one day to get back to them. When they shipped out the replacement lens it from from New York to Rhode Island instead of Connecticut then to my local hub. It showed "Out for Delivery" for a few days (I don't live in Rhode Island). I called and they said that they were unable to locate it and they would start a trace on it.
This is where I started to loose my mind... They said the trace will take up to 7 days and if it is lost then the shipped will need to file a claim and it will be 30 - 60 days for them to investigate before they would pay a claim.
Imagine my surprise when it showed up at my house today but wasn't reflected on their website until it showed as "Delivered"

My first attempts. A little soft. ISO400 with +1.3RV and only 1/250 sec on the cardinal. This was with a 1.4x tcon, no tripod, but braced against a wall and backlight conditions on a gray day. Not great, but a start. I recognize there will be a learning curve - and I MUST get an Arca Swiss attachment for my tripod.
Edit, white backdrop because of snow.

Scuff and Rik.. do either of you two know how to secure the 393/3421 without it twisting whilst on your shoulder (as in Riks picture)?
Every time I put the lens over my shoulder, the lens twists around due to gravity. I'd like to lock it in place but don't know how.

Adam - If you look under the rubber cap, you will see a hole, in there is a grub screw. loosen it off and turn the big knurled nob up really tight, then nip up the grub screw.
This will lock the panning movement of the head and you will be able to hold the lens over your shoulder in place by just gripping the monopod.

the exif on this reads # Exposure Time = 1/400 second
# Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 63/10 = F6.3
ISO Speed Ratings = 1600
and 700mm.
If this is correct, 1) used a Tcon?. 2)amazing sharpness for that shutter spped. 4) amazingly low noise for ISO 1600 and 5) great shots!

Yes, with a converter 1.4x and on a markIII. Shot it with a monopod with a full gimbal head. Just a little bit of noise reduction in DPP, setting to 2.

Just got this lens a couple of days ago and this was the first chance to get to grips with it.
Not as easy to use as the 300mm f2.8 but I think I'm going to like this lens when I've got the hang of it :)

I spent about 6 months with the 400L F5.6. Bokeh isn't as smooth. 400mm just isn't long enough on a 1d series body. The IQ is very good if you can get close, without a lot of cropping. The 500L just gives off a sense of intimacy with the subject either because of the sharpness as well as the shallow DOF at a smaller aperture.
Shots from the 400L F5.6
These 2 shots are probably the best ones I have from the 400L. For song birds, the reach isn't long enough and I often needed to add a converter on. That tends to make shooting even more challenging.

Negative because I only weight 135lb with a cyclist physique. Strong lower body and very thin upper body. A monopod with a full gimbal head give me enough flexibility for most of the shooting angles. I would never attempt an overhead shot because is hard with a 500L and 1dmarkIII in terms of weight and bulkiness. Also, the shot would not come out good anyway. I don't do BIF shots because I mainly like to shoot song birds and the smaller shore birds too.

I often hand hold this lens mounted on a MKIII all day at airshows, with a 300 f2.8 and another 1 series body over my shoulder for closer and larger aircraft - yes it hurts the next day, but it is worth it.
with wildlife I usually mount it on a manfrotto gimbal head and monopod.

Here is a handheld shot....I had to since I was chasing the red tails around the park at the last moment before driving back home. Just grabbed my lens and went for it... After 30sec or so my arms got tired.

Thanks but you have seen nothing yet. The shots were taken under ISO 1600. Very overcast sky. Here is a shot taken under a sunny day, Spring early this year... With a markII instead...

Tis a great club. I shot with this lens at Donna Nook yesterday, and it was perfectly handholdable.
Can't say that for the bloke with the 600 there though! Lugging his tripod, and wimberly around vs me and my camera/lens only.

Are you using the better beamer with your flash on this shot? What settings do you have on the flash? Nice

Yes, with better beamer. I think back then I was using TLL mode with -1 stop compensation. Now, I am using fully manual mode on the flash. Zoom range at 50mm. 1/8 power. I get more consistent flash exposure that way than using TLL mode.

Toomany, the sky was actually really blue that day. Here are 2 different photos. I opened them in ACR Raw converter (no adjustments made) then opened to PSE7 (again no adjustments) and here are the pics...no adjustments; sharpending, WB, ropping, saturation, highlights, conrast, shadows, color adj, no nothing. The sky was really blue on this day. I thought that was amazing. I really love the blue in the sky with the Eagle...these will be printed. Fortunately I did have a blue sky and did not have to superimpose a background like others try and do.

Do you keep it on this setting or do you vary the setting for different lighting conditions? And do you use a flash bracket?
I use the Better Beamer and have been using a flash bracket to help reduce the white eyes in birds. Just looking for alternatives to try and get better images.

I just put the flash on my hot shoe... Flash bracket? I would like to but it just make my setup bulkier than already is. :) The white eyes effect is easy to fix in photoshop. I don't worry about it. Generally, I don't have issues with it unless I am shooting birds with large eyes. For the flash setting, I only adjust the power output depending on the distance of the subject as well as the lighting condition of the day. Generally I stick to 1/4 to 1/8. Even 1/16 if there are strong sun light exposing the subject. A slight overly exposed flash exposure does not ruin the shot though. I can still save it during post processing. Of couse, I make sure the shutter speed won't go slower than my max flash sync speed. Otherwise, I would overly over expose the shot.

So is 1/16 a stronger output than 1/4 and 1/8 or is it the other way around? I think I am going to try your setup.
Thanks
