Not exactly what this lens was designed for but it kind of works in a pinch. With the 1.4x.

My first ever air show shots at Jones Beach LI. Hazy day isn't conductive to good shot IQ. :) I do what I could in post processing. I see why using a circular polarizer would help. In birding, you just don't shoot against the sun or the sky. For an air show, you just HAVE to..

I never thought of using the CPL. Well next year I will be better prepared and positioned. Hey at least you had better lighting than we did at AAFB...it cleared a bit for the Blue Angels though and in between where I was able to get some better shots. I can't post them here since it was not with the 500L buuuuuttt it was at 560mm...does that count? - just kidding.

Good shots

A CPL is problematic for airshows...

Because of the way the aircraft are transiting the sky, you can't maintain a constant angle off the sun and your skies will vary wildly.

Nice TooMany you must've been under those sky divers.

Here are a few shots I took back in January that some how got lost, or where never loaded into the library and so I did not see them for a long while but knew I was missing some photos. I just found them the other day (6 months later) and boy am I glad I found them as these are the best Eagle if flight shots I've gotten so far with the 500.

Psychic1 on the Egret in #1 how much did you crop it? It looks like the 500mm could of done way better, or you over sharpened or PP'ed it. #2 #2 looks great and #4 is a bit noisy, just wondering.

I have been there before, what I usually do in LR is drop the exposure -.3 to -.7 then bring up the Fill light and blacks. Then you can go to the recovery slider. Using the recovery slider only will actually drop the saturation and make the image look funny. You can also go to the curves and play with them. Then you can take it over to PSx and play with it even more. Give it a try see what happens.

Dolina, yes, for 12,800 it is.

But if you disregard ISO, you can see the medium/large noise patterns in the background of the picture.

What i do is isolate the main in focus area (tree and bees) with a mask and apply a selective NR targetting medium/large size noise just to the background,

then the picture will look like iso 100.

but in all honesty, thats only for commerical / important work that I do that for.

Hey Ed how you been man? Nope no blind I was 15' at most with the 500m no tubes. The nest was at eye level on a branch. At 15' away the mother was totally comfy with me. So I just left it at that while she was at the nest. I was excited to have that much.

Blahahaha you guys are killing me........ Nice attempt Jay, I know how hard it is to shoot outside your norm. Looks like a Great white Egret. I'll let it slide. hehehe

As for the carrying of the lens. Not to bad when you have the lens strap and the camera neck strap at the same length and have them both around your neck, it's easily hand holdable. You get used to it after a while. The tripod and gimbal head is what kills it.

Thomas Hopkins
13th of August 2010 (Fri), 16:34
I carry it on the tripod over my shoulder. I'm good that way for a couple of miles max. It does create a sore spot on my shoulders, even with my padded legs. Never tried using the strap as S.E.V. suggested. It's a bit much for me to shoot handheld as some others say so I must need to head for the gym.

I really like the 500. For a long lens it is very easily hand held for long periods of time making birds in flight a snap without a tripod.

The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) commonly abbreviated to just Night Heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where replaced by the closely related Rufous Night Heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).

Adults are approximately 64 cm (25 in) long and weigh 800 g (28 oz). They have a black crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs. Young birds are brown, flecked with white and grey. These are short-necked and stout herons.

I was hand holding it for 1.5 hours which is a long time.

Kidding aside I've been used to carrying heavier gear for longer periods of time and the 500's just right for hand holding. Would be sweeter if it was a 400 DO but that's something for later.

Which reminds me that I need to hit the gym and lose the weight.

Exactly. So they have stopped evolving in a way. :)

Not so fast...

They're always working on bird-like structures like variable camber wings (which can change their cross section), different materials and coverings (they've tried "feathers" or more accurately, shark skin coverings to break up surface drag like feathers do) and they already drill out structural members to lighten them like hollow bird bones.

More in common than you might think... ;)

Photographed above is a Zebra Dove in the Philippines

The Zebra Dove Geopelia striata, also known as Barred Ground Dove, is a bird of the dove family Columbidae, native to South-east Asia. It is closely related to the Peaceful Dove of Australia and New Guinea and the Barred Dove of eastern Indonesia. These two were classified as subspecies of the Zebra Dove until recently and the names Peaceful Dove and Barred Dove were often applied to the whole species.

The native range of the species extends from Southern Thailand, Tenasserim and Peninsular Malaysia to the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok. It may also be native in the Philippines.

The Zebra Dove is popular in captivity and many populations have appeared outside its native range due to birds escaping or being deliberately released. It can now be found in central Thailand, Laos, Borneo, Sulawesi, Hawaii (introduced in 1922), Tahiti (1950), New Caledonia, the Seychelles, the Chagos Archipelago (1960), Mauritius (before 1768), Réunion and Saint Helena.

It inhabits scrub, farmland and open country in lowland areas and is commonly seen in parks and gardens. Trapping for the cagebird industry has led to them becoming rare in parts of Indonesia but in most parts of its range it is common. Zebra Doves are among the most abundant birds in some places such as Hawaii and the Seychelles.

Jay, Congrats on the MKIV. Post your thoughts about pairing a MkIII with a MkIV.

Fixed It... ;)

Give me a little time to work with both and I'll come back with my $0.02 worth on how the MkIV compares.

(BTW, the logo above is actually from an Aviation Group I shoot with here in AZ. I post @ 1024X over there so I just link the aviation stuff here as well. It is a pretty cool logo though!)

Tareq, which lens did you decide to keep?

OK, my final decision is: to buy 2 lenses, 500 and 600

Thank you very much all!

As of the 21st of July he doesn't have either one listed in his gear list.

I wouldn't doubt it, UEA is loaded with some very wealthy peeps. probably got his hands in the oil biz, who knows. but to have a 100mm difference to me is not worth having both. Just my .02.
