There is now 2.8 IS on this lens unless you go with the Sigma 200-555 f2.8 IS./ Maybe you got the wrong lens thread?

Check it out! Is that a guidance system that comes with the lens?

Awesome shots Victor.

I can understand wanting faster glass but I rarely shoot below f/6.3 with this lens unless my subjects are at profile. I'm not a big fan of extreme shallow depth of field so f/8 is my comfort zone. I also can't remember the last time I turned the IS on, focus response is much quicker without it. Even for flight work(hand held), if the light is so low that I need the help of the IS, chances are motion blur will creep in regardless at 500mm. Of course I'm a bit of a stop action freak so I aim for zero wing blur any way I can get it, the right light level and ISO 400-500 have become required.

Alternatives fro getting lower to the ground are the NatureScapes "Skimmer" , but the Gitzo legs can get you down pretty darn low.

I rented one a few months ago and used a Induro CT 314 tripod with a RRS 55-H head + wimberly sidekick.

The 314 was extremely stable with this lens. I'm looking at picking up another tripod for my wife to use (she's just as crazy about the 500mm as I am) and am looking at the Gitzo GT3541LS or another CT314. The Gitzo is a little over a pound lighter than the CT314 so it is the contender for my wife.

Other options that I've researched: Induro CT 414, Gitzo GT-5561SGT, Gitzo GT3541XLS and the RRS TVC-33. Some use the Feisol 3342 (I think) with good results.

thanks for the links CDS...
looking for a beefier tripod and wanted to see if it is worth having the headroom for one of these in the future...

thanks Eric... i think gitzo's are a bit too pricey... was looking into the feisols... but i was told by Kerry that for such a lens, i should go with the 37mm tubes...

was kinda hoping that the 3342 or the 3442 was able to handle this...

Blahahahahahahaha, classical birding outfit when not trying to blend in. I was roughly about 60-100ft away from them around that point of shooting. I figured being behind the lens and camera I was blended in well enough.

For me, as close as humanly possible without spooking the subjects and not too close that my lens can't focus. I have no set distance since I like to blend in with the environment and stay there for 30 minutes or more, until the birds get used to me. My keeper ratio is high if the subject is within 20ft. There are a lot of times I miss shots because the birds got too close. This is when I wish I have a second body with me like a 70-200 or 300. Light angles play a great role here. I always use fill flash unless I am in the wide open with the sun lighting up the subject. In that case, your shots can be sharp even cropping down to 60%. Of course, I shoot not because I just want to capture pictures of birds. I want something worth printing and framing. I am kind of picky with settings, locations, and light angles.

Of course, makes sure your lens has no focusing issue.

I am using a rental from Lens Rentals.com - the focus ring has some gritty action/noise if you adjust it from the top side (like if you put any load on it from above) but from the sides and bottom its fine.

I just spent a bit micro adjusting this lens - I think that may have been my issue. I am going to try it indoor at a closer distance, but at like 300 ft I could manually focus MUCH sharper than the lens could autofocus. I set it to -10 on the MA and its much much better. I just need to see if the same holds true at like 30 or 40'. I only have it until Monday the 20th so I have limited time - I envy those who own this thing.

love the 400 5.6. Great glass and its holding me over till i get the money together for the next lens...the 500mm :) I'm waiting on the release of the new 500mm Mark II in 2011 to determine whether I buy the MK I or MK II.

I have a buddy with the 300 and he's able to throw the 1.4 extender on it for an 420mm 5.6 with IS...I'm tempted to do the same but the 1.4 takes a bit of quality away from the 300. not much but it is noticeable.

The worst is that mark1 would get discontinued and forcing you to get the markII costing over 10k??? Is going to be 10k since there is a 4k increase from the 400L F2.8 IS to the markII version. Used one could still be around 5k.

Perhaps. If the new one is 10K, weighs less than the current 500mm and is as amazing as they say the new 400 L 2.8 MK II is, I'd have to seriously consider it.

Or...I buy 2 used mark I's for the same total outlay (1 for me...1 for my wife).

Interesting to see what happens.

[QUOTE!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!![/QUOTE]

That's a Bull Shark that was caught in the surf by a guy nice enough to let me take a few shots before he released it. I didn't see the entire catch but he told me that he was setting up his second rod and reel and looked over to see his first rig zipping through the waves. He ran, dived in and managed to grab it and it was right after that when saw him reeling. The funny thing was that the people swimming nearby didn't leave the water after he released it, now THAT'S a !!!!!!?!?!?!. :D

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

It was only about 4 1/2 feet. Not so scary out of water but I wouldn't want to spend time in the water where its feeding.

Just stumbled upon the lens archive section - such wonderful images! It's going to take a long time to view these threads:)

Two older ones from me. The first one with the 40D and second with the 50D. Both handheld, manual focused. I love my 500mm - very enjoyable to use and it's the perfect blend of focal length, weight, and price (well the price could always be lower :)) for what I like to do.
