I am sorry, but English is not really natural for me.

I tried to asked, about the fact when the sun is not behind you, colors are often looking like washed (unsaturated or even grey) even when hood is on. compared with what we get with shorter lenses (even when the sun is directly in the picture).
In the link I posted we could see the blue is completly white with the 500mm and still blue with the 85L or most of the lenses.

Never mind if you don't understand ...

Okay, i understand now. hehehe I get that when the sun is directly in front of me, the color is slightly off but nothing a little post can't fix. But never really checked to tell you the truth.

Sevan:)

I took these shots a couple of weeks ago at HBSP so I would assume they are there at least all summer but I'm not sure about that. Steve (Nighthound) lives close by so he would know.

I only went to HBSP but after I returned someone in the bird section posted some shots of a wild heron rookery at Waccatee zoo that allows photographers to enter early to photograph them and it looked like pretty close access. He mentioned in a couple of weeks there would be hundreds nesting at the location.

Well lets see Nikons 200-400 is $6799.00 so when Canon releases there I would think it would probably be near the 8k-10k mark. Your talking built in TC so that's like an additional $700.00. But lets hope it performs like no other zoom does with and with out the TC in action.

Jay, sick hummies man. By the looks of it are you a marine, army or other branch of defense? Or do you have good connection to be on base to shoot?

Actually, I'm none of the above but I'm fortunate to live near a former Air Force base where we still get a lot of transient military hardware. The infrastructure and facilities they have (including 3 x 10,000' runways) are hard for the current military to pass up and it lies right along the route many birds take when headed between eastern and western bases.

These were shot from outside the fence but with the aid of a ladder so I could get up over the barbed wire. Airport management knows many of us and they're fine with it so long as we don't hang on the fence or otherwise risk ourselves or security.

It's a relationship we're proud of and we work very hard to keep it intact.

See, now that's exactly the mindset we work really hard to fight... :p

Many airport managers in the UK have the right idea. They actually allow better access to their properties if photographers are willing to register and "pledge" to help keep an eye on things.

Who better to help than people with really long lenses who know the place and are familiar with what are normal operations?

Thanks, Neily and Joe!

Great shots Romy, that Stilt is excellent, when you use manual exposure, where do you take your initial exposure reading from?

I normally adjust my manual exposure till the highlights are about to be blown (ETTR).

In this case, because the stilt's whites are critical for overexposure, I priorly shot some test frames on the ones feeding in the water, reviewed my histogram and adjusted the EVs accordingly. When the birds started taking to the air, all that concerned me was focus and tracking..... exposure was optimal regardless of the changing BG.

Joined the club today. Took the lens to a local park and took a few handheld shots.

I guess if I'm going to shoot these fidgety little dinosaur things, I should learn what they are, but for now, I'll call them birds.

The first one is easy. In following POTN tradition, you must shoot a duck, so here it is. Weird looking duck though.

I tested it in really bad weather ( the picture doesn't show that ), because the light wasn't great at all.
The AF worked with no problems at all. So after a few first shoots, I am very happy with it.
