I have to get the following things out of my system so who ever reads this is the lucky recipient. They are in Random order.
1. Have you noticed that Janet Jackson seems to be on the cover of every magazine except, I think, maybe popular mechanics and ladies home journal. And Good pictures too. I suspect the release of a new album may have had something to do with it, but I counted at least 10 different magazines she was on the cover of at the 7-11. After that I ran out of fingers :)
2. My daily drive back from work is now missing my favorite and most noticeable attraction - They floated the CVN-77 from the construction dock in the past two days. When 90,000+ tons of metal is missing it is easy to notice the emptyness. I had to work, so didn't get a chance to take pictures of it leaving the nest. It will be at least a year or two before the next one gets far enough along to see it from the road.
3. I really want to say something about a certain backwards country lead by a spoiled brat on the other side of the planet, but it would be inappropriate for this forum. But I dare him to launch a nuke, I double dare him. He will be lucky to get it off the ground.
[Note: that I ask that no one responds to #3, just venting here]
4. I really should be doing my homework assignment for the studio lighting class I am taking, but given it is hot lights and I may have to drop the class due to work, I am really not inspired tonight. Luckily I already have everything I need set up in my Studio/living room already.
5. Lastly, speaking of the local 7-11, my local store got Rocky Road ice cream back in stock and I am feeling much better now that I have had some.
Thanks for letting me get it out of my system.

sometimes you just need to vent.. I understand.
Go enjoy your icecream. One of my favorites is rainbow sherbet, a little milk and a little vodka all mixed up like a thick shake. :))) I might do that tonight in fact!

Nice post. Too bad about missing the carrier move, that would have been fun to shoot.

CVN-77? What's that?

CVN-77? What's that?
C = Cruiser
V = Aircraft Carrying
N = Nuclear Powered
77 = The 77th CV or CVN
or The "George H.W. Bush" Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier
Supposedly the last of the Nimitz class nuclear carriers. It gets its USS prefix next year.
Given that you are from New Zealand, I seem to remember we aren't allowed to take them into your ports (although that restriction might have been lifted) so understand why you would not know one if you saw one.

I did wonder about that. Thanks for the info. The restriction hasn't been lifted yet. so the likey hood of me ever seeing it is a big fat zero.
I did watch something on discovery channel about mega structures. They were going on about how it was being built. it was interesting to say the least. It would be interesting to take a tour of the ship.
So why is it going to be called George HW Bush, how does that naming conveation work?

Well I only read Science Journals and the occasional Photography book so not much chance of seeing Janet Jackson.
Wish you hand't dared him, he went ahead and did it.

To the best of my ability at answering the question while avoiding politics.
You see Bush the first was a Republican, The Republicans are in power across the board and the Republicans like naming things after Reagan, but that has been used for a carrier already (CVN-76) so given that GHW Bush was a Naval Aviator (a real one) and followed Reagan, it only seems appropriate for them to name the next carrier after Bush.
Please note that there is a nuc sub named by the Democrats after Jimmy Carter. I think that happened when the Democrats were in charge under Clinton. Funny how that works out. :)
I seem to remember that carriers used to be named after famous American battles (like Saratoga and Lexington) or after airplane or flight themes like Langley (I think he was the first in the military to crash in an airplane) and Hornet, but somewhere along the way they started naming them after presidents and secretaries of Navy and Defense.
If the Democrats win in 2006 and 2008 I expect the next carrier to be named the Clinton.
Please don't take me seriously on that one, Please don't.
As to the other topic, they haven't launched one yet - they did fizzle one in the ground though - as in nice try. You know that saying about close only counts in Horseshoes, handgrenades and nucs, well their's was badly done enough that close won't count.

thanks for the answer longwatcher. Just typical about policties tho. Can't get away from it either. I am not really to conserned about what happens in american goverment. one of advantages of being in another country with out own system.
The doco on discovery said this is the last of the class. The next aircraft carrier will take less people and use the lastest and greatest in tech.

Both of them Bush-I and Bush-II, along with wives. No pictures allowed and cameras will be confiscated by security at the christening, so I didn't go. Looked like a poor turn out anyway based on the parking lot presence so because of that I didn't even bother taking pictures of the crowd, which I could have done off property.
The USS Reagan had a huge turn out at its christening (full parking lot and buses running people from other areas and that was just for Nancy Reagan. I literally walked over to that one as the parking lot back ramp is at the end of my block and they allowed pictures with no problems other then a quick check at security to make sure it was a camera. Thinks sure have changed.

You should see my freezer around December as that is the only time I can get my favorite which is Peppermint ice cream (red pepermint only please). I usually stock up with like 3-4 half gallons, but am usually out by March, earlier if I forget to restock in January before it disappears for the year again. Rocky Road and Green Mint chip just tied me over until holidays.

Did I ever mention that my first Uni was a few meters away from where Pete Townsend lives? I used to drool over his blue Ferrari.

I hope your going to take some photos of it. knowing your americans you could have something like pink banana spilt ice cream. In NZ we only get the basics :)
We do have something called hocky pocky ice cream.
This thread proves that the number of replys to any topic is related to the how well known someone is :)

true. I do think that I look out for folks that i'm familiar with to see what they're up to.. it's natural.. but, that doesn't mean that the new folks are ignored...

What a great idea, I have to do a product shot of food for my studio lighting class I am taking - Ice Cream - great idea. I was going to do breakfast crepes, but ice cream is easier.

Just watch those lights, they could get rather hot and hence melt it. This could either work for you as the only thing to do once you got melted ice cream is to eat it :) what a shame that would be.

Have you ever noticed that Janet and Michael are never together. I think Janet and Michael ARE the SAME person! Yep. That's my story and I am sticking to it. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Ignoring the video they did together, they have unfortunately been seen at the same time in person at Michael's trial a couple years ago.
I personally suscribe to the failed cloning theory myself. :) :) :)

You know, for years I thought Michael and Janet Jackson were the same person and I was really taken aback when I found out different.
Key Lime Pie is my favorite. The real Key Lime Pie with the white pie crust made with Crisco (hog fat) shortening, not the Graham Cracker crust that you buy in stores, and a home made meringue topping.

Btw, Carter was a nuclear (why can't bush get that right?) submarine officer, and the USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) was christened in Dec 04.
