I start with basic situation: group INDEX (always there) and four groups. 20 exhibitions and user public can view them all.
Here I have put group "test 1" inside "INDEX, "test 2" inside "test 1", "test 3" inside "test 2" and "test 4" inside "test 3". This is called nesting. Because none of the groups have exhibitions in them, preview shows nothing ("private area"). All groups but INDEX are displayed as orphan, because they are included in the structure but lead to nowhere.

Nesting groups is easy: select a group from the left and select group you want to put inside it, from the right. Then click "SAVE THIS GROUP".
Here I have nested four groups, and added one exhibition to group "test 4". Because there is now content in last group, EE shows the whole branch to the user who has permission to view that content.

Now, If I put one exhibition into group "test 3" instead, and no exhibitions in group "test 4", the "test 4" disappears from view.

I add exhibitions to group "test 4". Select group from the left, select exhibitions to add, click SAVE THIS GROUP. You see a preview of the structure immediately.

Now, if I remove group "test 4" from group "test 3", the group "test 4" vanishes from preview. Group removal is done by deselecting (keep CTRL key down and left click, with Mac use option key).

But group "test 4", even if it does not belong to any group, is still intact in EE! If I add group "test 4" to group "INDEX", it appears with all that is stored below it (several exhibitions in our example).

Always look at the preview, it shows the tree for selected user, according to permissions that user has.
Select always first from left the group you want to add or subtract to.
