Read the manual, then read it again. I carry mine in my camera pack so I have it for reference when needed also. I'm sure you'll love that camera.. Great choice.

If you have the man in .pdf

You can print a "full" page or even 4-6 up on one page.

only prob, "copy" shows up over the page........

But, I only have a few pages that I ref.

pg: 141-146 custom functions

pg 71 metering mode (cuz I always the the 3 modes mixed up)

Read the manual.
Read the manual.
Then, read it again.
Then search PotN for any of the topics you're unsure of.

Then go and take a picture of a duck. :)

Read the manual and recite it. :D

Good luck with the camera. Sure is a beast compared to A610. Is it new or used?

In case no one has mentioned this yet...
Read the manual.
Then when you can't figure something out, read the manual again.
Keep the manual with your camera and don't go anywhere without it.

If your CF card has been used prior to the 20D I suggest formatting the card before you shoot... this way you'll start at shot 001.

Enjoy your new toy. :)

I was so excited when I bought my 20D last Christmas that right after I charged the battery, I just went out shooting with it. I read the manual a little bit, but I'm more of a trial and error kind or person, I guess. Especially going from a D70 to the 20D it was a little bit of a transition for me.

Congrats on the new camera. You're going to love it!

Practice, practice, practice. Make mistakes and learn from them. Don't be afraid to try creative composition.

100 times more useful then the manual. Not to say don't read the manual. Just read the manual once and make sure you get a feel for all the camera's features.

Tdaugharty is right, I just learned the other day when I go duck shooting and the ducks are moving a lot, I must shoot at higher ISO'S then 100 to freeze motion w/ a fast shutter speed.

Darn, I knew there was something I forgot to mention. Definantly, get the duck.

The most important thing I learned when I bought my 20D (now 30D) was to use RAW image capture. Access to the full dynamic range of an image was a major plus over using jpeg format. Canon DPP software is the package to use if you don't have Photoshop CS and the RAW plug-in.

Yes, find a duck, snap it and post it over at dpreview where it will be welcomed ;-)

Definitely - I did have mine set to take RAW and jpeg, but have given up the jpeg, and take RAW all the time. I don't use the Canon DPP though, prefer Photoshop CS

Fortunately I like to read. When I got the D30 I would sit in bed with it before going to sleep and read the manual and play with the buttons. I did this long enough that I almost gave up watching TV.

Then, when I got the D60, I did the same thing. It's the only right way to learn the camera. Do that enough and you'll memorize the manual and won't need to carry it around.

Now, I have to do it again next week, when the 30D arrives. I'm looking forward to it. :D

My TV hasn't been on in weeks, so there's an added benefit. Saves on electricity and mind rot.
