View Full Version : If its Autumn, then these must be Kinglets

I found these on Saturday and Sunday in my yard. Waited patiently for them to descend from the hights to a lower tree of the same type ( bark is like birch but its black) They only seemed to like whatever was in this type of tree. A bit of red can be seen on the head of the last one ( Ruby Crowned Kinglet). The second shot may be the female...hard to tell when no red appears which is normal for this time of year. The first shot is a Golden Crowned Kinglet.
These tiny birds are prety frustrating to photograph as they make the average warbler look like its in slow motion. Both species are 10cm which is approximately 1 cm longer than a Hummer. It certainly is Autumn here.

Excellent images as usual . This is when having the faster focusing 400 5.6 pays off. I have alot of problems trying to focus on the fast movers. Could you e-mail directions to your backyard ;)

Gary, I live right next to the forest/marsh/field/river/wild area but actually have to leave the yard to see them...you live in an urban area and they come to you!! It's an upside down world I tell you. Good shots with a nice Fall feel to them.

Awesome shots, especially the first! Love that golden crown. I've been seeing a lot of these 2 species recently. You're right, they are one of the most frustrating of species to photograph, even though you can approach them (or rather, they approach you) closely.

If you can photograph Kinglets you can photograph anything. Air shows, Indy Car, Nascar and most everything else are easy compared to the bird with A.D.D.. Kinglets are the king of crazy.:) Like the first one best, sharp with fall colors. Great ones Gary.

Wow, excellent shots Gary, those little guys are among the most "nervous" of small birds. Tough enough to get a look at them let alone a pic.

Perfect shots Gary, as always beautifully photographed and a bonus is the autumn colours, giving a rich colourful composition to the shots.
Never seen these birds before, so a real treat. The details and focus are also quite outstanding, well done.

Thanks Wayne and I am pretty happy to see them in the yard. I saw the Golden Crowned last year at this time in the same tree but could not get any shots ..did manage some at Petrie last year though. I went out to the same tree today after work and there was the Ruby...still here. I think i got better shots today of the Ruby and with the 200 F2.8 but will have to convert from RAW and process first.

Thanks Chris...even with the fast AF I tossed quite a few shots...these guys are insane...its like they will explode if they stop moving ...even when the body is at rest the head is doing a dance:D

Urban it is Dan but perhaps not as upside down a world as you think ... I have a good view of that small old growth forest on the other side of Innes from my yard ( by the Water Tower) and there are several sqare kilometers of brush and open field behind it. I pray they don't develop that land too soon and there is work being done by the city to try and trade city owned land for that patch of forest...I wish them luck. Many of the visitors to my yard are from that wild place ....plus Gail has planted various berry shrubs and trees that attract birds and the mature trees ( a maple between 60 and 100 yeas old) and huge cedars help invite the birds in for food and water. The yard is also 1/4 acre or more so there is room for many species without too much bickering. Thanks for the comment and hope to see you soon.

Thanks for the comment and they do approach quite closely if you don't move. I stayed motionless for 20 minutes today while a Rubycrowned approached and I got some close to minimum focus shots with my 200 F2.8. My wife was doing some gardenning and i told her to come closer.... very quietly. She could not believe how small the bird was and it was the first time she had seen one in real life.

 Thats one great commet Zip and i see you left out wedding photography:lol: good thing because that is the most stressful photography I have ever done and after 5 weddings and even thoug the images worked out nicely. I swore i would never do another one
Petkal Cute.....the gold crown stands out nice.
Gotta get lottsa DoF, higher shutter speeds with those birds, eh ?
Perfect world Peter would be low ISO. high DOF and superfast shutter speed with shutter speed ranking as #1 in my books. If the bird is in profile shallow DOF still works because they are so small. I shot some today at F2.8 and 3.5...look pretty good so far:D
When are you going to have us over for a shoot? ][/B]
Any time although i never know from one day to the next what is going to show up...Bluejays, Cardinals, Nuthatches, Chickadees, House Finches, Downys and Hairys are pretty well garanteed every day this time of year. I could host an Ottawa POTN BBQ or something similar next year ....easy for me but its finding a day when everyone is available and the sun is shining:cool: If you want some bluejay shots ...they come every day to steal my peanuts...come within 7-8 feet of me...no blind required...option is open for the Fall and Winter. Thanks for taking the time to comment Stephen
And a big thank you also to Blue, Sindri, Trace, nitefrogger, Paul, Reyno, Tony ,Tina and Winkie
Here are a couple more of the Golden Crowned Kinglets from the same shoot...
