They are very closely priced. The 100 is $410 on B&H, the 85 is $355. And actually I bought my 100 used on F&M for I think $300.

Has anybody tried this lens with extension tubes? Only reason i'm asking is to find a fast 100mm lens for a friend and still be able to do some macro with it. The 100/2.8 macro has a MFD of 12", the 100/2 is at 36"...big difference. If I can't use it well for macro, then I won't be recommending it. Whatcha say?

The 100f/2 and 100f/2.8 main difference are: a f-stop faster for the f/2, but the 100 has 1:1 macro. The macro is pretty fast at getting AF on fast moving subjects. If you need macro, go with the 100f/2.8

I don't know if you are sliding the focus limiter on the 100 macro or not. To use it as a "regular" lens. It has to be set on the .41 setting.

Me too .. lol!

I'm really leaning towards the 100 f/2. I was really, really linking the 50 2.5 compact macro.
It reminds me alot of my 135mm macro takumar for the Pentax 6x7.
If you wanna get up close on a pair of rings, just do a min focus and walk in or out till its sharp.

With the 100 f/2, is it the same? Or, do you have to flip/slide a switch to enter macro?

I gotta get somewhere and rent a few lenses .. I have a funny feeling tho
that I'm gonna end up with the 100 f/2. I do mostly people photography also,
and in working with brides, models, and senior's, along with the occasional family portrait,
I'm thinking the best bang for the buck is gonna be the 100 ..

This thread (and the other lens archive's) are really super duper helpful .. ;)

Just picked one of these up on ebay for around $300. Can't wait til it gets here!

I know 100mm isn't exactly a versatile length for a crop sensor...but I filtered all of the pics I've taken with my 80-200 2.8 and, lo and behold, a very large majority of them were between 95-110mm! So I figure this'll be a great indoor/low light candid lens.

Just got this baby...I love it! At first I thought that my fears were justified - that 100mm was too inconvenient on a crop camera - but I'm starting to think otherwise. The ONLY thing that's a little bit disappointing is that, as I remember reading somewhere on another website, the optics on this guy are designed more for close subjects than far ones, so you do lose some detail with distance. However, I honestly don't notice this unless I'm really digging for it, and what I HAVE noticed is that shots from this lens respond very, very well to sharpening.

Just a DOF experiment here - how awesome is this! That's the roofrack on my car...

I actually started a thread about this, because I love the 100mm and was wondering if I should have went for the 135L. A few people replied who had both lenses and they said they could hardly notice the difference. Have a look at threads I have started to see. I'm on my cell phone so I can't post the link :)

Jman13
27th of May 2009 (Wed), 19:05
I've owned the 135L and I now own the 100 f/2. Optically, there is VERY little difference between them. The 100 is just as sharp, and the bokeh is just as nice. The color is a bit richer on the 135, and there is a little less color fringing wide open, though that's a nitpick. Other than that, they're essentially identical. The 135 might be a smidge sharper, but that's like comparing the sharpness of two different brands of razor blades. I have found the 135 to be a more consistent focuser...my 100 can go on spurts where it backfocuses for a while...then it'll be perfect for a while. It's odd. My 135 was always dead on.

Cl!ckFoto

I took it out to test just that the other day. Look at my previous shot of the leaf on my car, and then there's one. I'd say it's pretty nice :)

That would be a field of tall grass that stretches about 100 yards beyond the in-focus blades.

Thanks
They're really similar! Both SHARP! The 135 is a little bit sharper, and nicer colors straight from the camera.. As far as AF, they're both super fast! Bokeh is almost identical, with a slight edge to the 135.

I'm actually debating selling one of them, because they are so close in focal length and IQ.

Cl!ckFoto

I get a lot more CA with my 100/2 than i did with the 135L. Besides that and the color rendering, they're nearly identical. for the price, the 100/2 is awesome.

Cool shots Ron! Love the second one!

Here's a shot from NYC yesterday. A bit overprocessed and just screwing around, but I don't know, I kinda like it. And I still am blown away by how well shots from this lens respond to sharpening.

Thanks matonanjin! This really is the ultimate street candid lens. Nice aperture for evening shots, great sharpness, and, best of all, a focal length that lets you stay just far enough away from people coupled with a comparatively tiny size that lets you keep a low profile. Now all I need is a bit of guts!

Argh, I'm so torn! I have both 100/2 and 135L and want to sell 135L since I so rarely use it, but can't bring myself to do it. 100 is nearly as good, weighs much less, is smaller and much cheaper, but 135 has some special qualities that I can't really put my finger on...

how come you use the 100 more than the 135 just the weight?

Helena
14th of July 2009 (Tue), 15:27
how come you use the 100 more than the 135 just the weight?

The main reason is that I prefer the focal length. 135mm is too long for me both indoors and outdoors. (Outdoors I prefer either shorter or longer.) Yes, weight plays a part too, but if Canon made a 100 or 105L I'd probably sell both 100/2 and 135L and get that one instead, so weight isn't that important. :)

One thing that the 135L does clearly better is colors (and also contrast to some extent) in dull light, and I'm kind of obsessed with colors. :D Perhaps because I am an artist/illustrator and work with colors all day long, so that is the first thing I see in a photo, after the actual subject of course. This makes it very hard to sell the 135L, and I still haven't decided. Fortunately, I don't need the money right now.
