hi, i was planning to get this lens and i already have nifty fifty, i'm affraid the focal length it's too close between 50-100 in full frame. How much step if u are using 50mm to get 100mm view ?? sry for my english. Thx :)

Jman13
19th of September 2009 (Sat), 10:01
It's twice the focal length. Twice the crop. It's as big a step as going 200mm to 400mm.

As to steps...completely depends on the subject. For something super close, it might only be 2-3 steps. For something far away, it might be a quarter mile. :)

Now for something a little different ;)
This is from Cutting Horse Association of Nebraska Futurity (CHAN) that I shot for 4 days September 24-27. I need to look but I think this is the horse that won it.
As always at an indoor horse show the light was unbelievably bad. I kept switching from high ISO available light to flash and back. I am busy putting proofs up for sale on my web site but here is one of the high ISO ones for your comments. This was at ISO 1600 and the fastest shutter speed I could muster with an F/2 lens was 1/500th. And I still had to push process a full stop:( Considering conditions I think maybe it turned out ok but my eyes are blurry from hours of PP!

I love this lens for my business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canon 1D MkII, 100 F/2, ISO 1600, 1/500th, F/2. Slight curves adjustment and then Imagenomic NoisewarePro for noise. Very slight sharpening in CS3.

You, sir, make this lens absolutely shine. It's a gem on your camera.

I, like many others, have been considering the 135L, but after finding this lens last night (and trying out a friends 85 1.8 that I see to be very similar) will most probably put the funds into this instead. :p

I had the same problem. I figured people would want to sell so they could buy the new 100 2.8 Macro IS. No such luck.
Finaly I found one, haggled for a week and bought it at a reasonal price.
One week later, I saw three for a lot less (I did a quick check, all sold :().

I'm still very very happy with it thought. Perfect for indoor concert shooting and portraits.

Good luck. I hope you get lucky!

Has anyone tried this lens at ballroom dance competitions? I have been renting the 135mm f/2 L and it has been working well for me, but it's price is too high for me to buy and I have been thinking of buying the 100mm f/2. I am mainly wondering if it focuses fast enough for the faster dances.

matonanjin
1st of February 2010 (Mon), 09:44
It is the lens I use almost exclusively for indoor horse shows in low light. I doubt if any of your dancers move as fast as a horse. But your venues may be darker than an indoor horse arena. I don't know.

Then again, I use it on a 1DMkII which has incredibly low light AF ability. It is going to be largely dependant on what body you use it on.

Just got my copy. Great for portraiture and indoor sports. Focus is relatively fast and accurate even with my 5d classic. (I am occasionally able to use other than the center point and get sharp results, believe or not)

These samples are from local Judo competition in Finland. Other one has been combined in PS, three shot burst. Shot the whole match 1/500 f2 iso800. It's a fast sport when something happens...

This is one impressive lens. Just got it today and only took a couple test shots so far in the backyard, but it's unbelievable for the price. I was thinking of saving up and getting a 135L, but forget that, this is great for 1/3 of the price.

The 85mm f/1.8 gets pushed hard on these forums and costs $100 less, so you will find many more users of that lens. You will also find many more people selling that lens than the 100/2.

The 85mm thread is 250 pages vs 25 pages for the 100mm thread. Similar results on Flickr - the 85mm group has 1300 members and the 100mm group has 200.

None of this makes me any less happy with my 100mm.

Just make sure you are far enough away from the action, otherwise you might find this lens to be a bit long. I was in the bleachers in a high school gym for these shots.

20D single shot center point.

That is still faster than my 5dc! I`m trying to make the most out of my 5dc for shooting Taekwondo. I know, I don`t have the right camera body as I`m a landscape/urban shooter. So I have to compromised and get me a longer focal and faster lens. I haven`t tried using AI Servo in this event. I think it`s doable.

Alright im looking for a portrait lens...im in between the 85 or 100 and its a hard choice....

Do they both have the same amount of CA??
What about OOF blur??
Sharpness?????
I mean dam, everything between them is so close i just dont know.
I have a 7D...no plan on going full frame with in the next 2 years probably. I just want a good telephoto portrait lens.

I do alot of maternity portraits, and engagement pictures. Nothing that I make alot of money off of or I would get a 135L and a 5D.

Get the 85 1.8- 85mm is a very popular length for portraits and seems to work quite well. Probably be easier to resell too

Do you think the 100 would be too long? I heard that the 100 is "similar" to the 135 on full frame.
I use my 70-200 F4 usually, but it doesnt have enough isolation for me most of the time for me.

Well if you want to compare, try 85mm and 100 on your 70-200!

85mm is more popular on 1.6x crop cameras because 85x1.6=136mm, or pretty much exactly what 135mm looks like on film or FF. 135mm is a classic portrait length. 100m does work fine, though, you just need a bit more room to work and you can get into the "flattening effect" of telephoto lenses for portraits.

honestly, I wish there was a 66mm f1.4. That would be my favorite crop portrait length! (105mm on FF equivalent)

I see...well I dont even know then. I have 3 lenses on my mind to get siggy 30mm and 50mm and then a 85 or 100mm. The first 2 are going to be a given but in between the canons, I just dont know. Maybe ill rent one for 3 days to see if I like the length.

Well there is always the 60mm 2.8 =)

Using it on my 70-200 is a little different. If it was a 2.8 I think I would be fine. But and extra stop is an extra stop and does make a difference for me. Right now i cant afford a mk2 2.8, sooo some cheap prime are my choice.

I just got a brand new Canon 100mm f2 today bought from ADORAMA.

At first , seems like it is not sharp at all on my 5DC. So I decided to do a focus test.

and here it is: 100mm @ f2.0

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/5255/100f22.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/i/100f22.jpg/)

Below is an actual shot taken by this lens and my 5dc. I staggered the batteries and I focus the shot at the middle battery. You`ll noticed that the focus or sharp image is the battery behind it, which is the farthest one on the right.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/7153/100f2.jpg (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/100f2.jpg/)

I have 14 days to return or exchange with no questions ask. Or should I send to Canon for calibration? I still have to pay shipping for Adorama return or exchange, whereas Canon will provide both.

What do you guys think?

Update: I sent it back to Adorama for full refund.

I just sent it back and not deal with another one again. I already lost $15 for shipping it back to Adorama. The lens has 6mm back focus on my 5Dc. If I only have a micro adjust on that body, it`s should have been ok. The 5D2 looks promising, but I don`t like video in a DLSR.

Just as a note for the future; if you order an item that you believe to be faulty, call the Canon tech line and describe the problem.

If they agree that it needs to come back, you will be given a reference number. Contact me with that number and we'll send a pre-paid label for shipping it back to us!

Helen, thanks for the response. I got the lens Wednesday which is really fast! And tested it that night and packed it the next day. I already mailed it back to you guys on Thursday via USPS.
I already spent $15 to return it. I tried to PM you, but I think you don`t accept PM`s, which is understandable. I was going to send you an email last Wednesday night, but I just decided to send it back ASAP before the holiday.

BTW, that is why I asked here if send it back to you guys or to Canon. Canon has free shipping back and forth.
But after having my Canon 5Dc sent to them for mirror recall work, they said they cleaned the sensor for free. It came back still dirty.
That only tells me they do shortcut work....I would not let them work on my new lens.

PMs don't work for me, because if I'm away from the office you wouldn't receive my out-of-office reply......

Also, if I need to forward a customer query on to another department, it means copying and pasting - and it's a lot harder to keep track of PMs than emails.

I borrowed this lens from a friend last year, and have since been trying to get him to sell it to me! I may end up biting the bullet and getting it at eBay/Craigslist prices (which, because of its relative scarcity, are higher than 85/1.8 prices).

Anyway, here's a couple examples of it used for street photography, both were shot at f2.0 and 160 iso:

Just about to get this lens I been debating between the 100 f2 and 85 f1.8. I decided to go 100 cause 85mm is too close to my 50 1.4 I already have. I will mainly be using it outdoors and some indoor sports/events. Just wondering if anyone here feels 100 is too long on crop for portraits?

EDIT- any known issues with lens? concerns?

cinemafia
7th of June 2010 (Mon), 17:54
For me, 160mm equiv (100mm on x1.6 crop) is a little too long for portraits...80mm-135mm being the golden ratio there. But, of course, it depends on what you're comfortable with. I understand where you're at though...deciding between the 100/2 and the 85/1.8 really is a difficult decision, but the 85 is generally the more practical choice, if only because you get a half stop more speed, and you can usually find them for less because there's more of them on the market.

I think 100mm would be pushing it. 85mm is about as long as I would go, personally...but I don't shoot sports.

EDIT- any known issues with lens? concerns?
I think you will be quite happy with the 100mm f2. It only takes two steps back compared to the 85mm to get the same vof when taking portraits, and the reviewers are reporting less purple fringing. Seeing you have the 50mm, it could be a good fit.

couple recent ones, this has to be my favorite lens at the moment. Third ones a bit shallow but I'm always shooting it wide open haha

^^ I agree...I still don't understand why the 85/1.8 is so well known, but this isn't.

It's that 1.8. It sounds so much sexier than f2.0 even though it makes no difference in real usage.

I think part of it is the fact that the 85 F/1.2L is such a worshiped lens. And then a person realizes he can't afford it and "steps down" to the 1.8 without considering the alternative. Just speculating.

Just had to send my 100 F/2 to Canon for servicing. All of a sudden it's missing focus bad! I will find out if CPS really does make any difference in the turn around time!
