The 85 1.8 , 100 F2.0, and 135l 2.0 are three of the better indoor sports lenses. Each is excellent. Depends on how much reach you want (where you sit, do you move, what kinds of shots you like to take, etc.)

Wild Wolf,
It was early summer and I don't remember what I ate yesterday, but I'll try! I'd gotten lens in a trade and was outside shooting everything in site. The father was dropping the son off across the street; the son said he didn't have a picture with his dad and asked me to. This was the one I presented out of about 10 shots.
Always run a lite USM to clarify all images. Cleaned up blemishes using spot healer (very small brush) and clone (25% opacity), dup imag, slight gaussian blur, then on mask painted eyes, mouth, hairline back in, upped saturation 10% and I think I applied a bit of diffused glow at the end for something different. With black/brown skin you have to make sure it isn't too red, so I use selective color to taste. Oh, yeah, dodged whites of eyes.
Feel free to PM if you have other questions. I don't want to bore anybody.

I bought this lens off of the FM forums and it looks like it is from the 70's (how long has this thing been in production :p). The USM on it chatters like a mother, but the AF seems to work fine and the glass is clean.
Anyway, I don't have a duck, but I found the next best thing. These are ranging in aperture from 2.0 to 5.6. Shot in RAW and converted with DPP (neutral picture style). Distance to the first bottle is about 4 ft with about a foot (maybe a bit more) in between each bottle. The first one is a bit soft (not sure at this point how much of that was me and how much was the lens). Oh and pardon my gimpy lean!

The 100 f/2.0 is an excellent lens. It's pretty much identical to the 85 1.8, with the exception that its one stop slower and 15mm more focal lenght. I loved the copy I had. I found the AF and image quality to be just as good as the 85 1.8. You really can't go wrong with the 85 or 100.

The 100 is actually 1/3 stop slower than the 85. It would be a full stop slower than the 50 1.4 etc.

I'm really enjoying the 28 1.8, it is basically my walk around lens. I feel like I have a really nice set of primes for gig photography now (28, 50 1.4, and of course the 100 2). Hopefully I'm done acquiring lenses for awhile, and I can concentrate on technique (yeah right ;))!
Here are a couple recent gig shots with the 100 f/2 (originally posted in the performing arts forum). These images are from my website so pp has been applied.

Its a great lens, but most people give the 85 more attention cuz
1)I believe it is a bit more expensive
2)most the people who get the 85 seem to use it for indoor sports and the 85 does have a faster AF, not a hugely faster AF, but enough that it does make a difference for indoor sports...
3)plus the 1.8 is needed sometimes and obviously the 100 cant quite get there.....LOL
The 100 is a great sports lens as well, just not quite as fast as the 85. When I tried it, the copy I tried was slow enough that it was frustrating after using the 85...

It is a very fine lens, but so are the 85/1.8 and the 135/2.
Choose based on focal length you want.
Here are some with the 100 f/2, all taken with an XT/350D.
By the way, I think it makes an excellent landscape lens.

The thing that gets me is the 85 is cheaper and faster.
It's hard for me to gauge just how useful 1.8 vs. f/2 is, although it's probably more crucial here than on the nifty-fifty (only lens I have with which to compare) due to the longer focal length.
I wonder how the AF on this compares to the 85 also. I will probably buy one or the other 'later'.... it's going to be really hard to decide when it actually comes time.
135L.....? That is out! You could buy the 85 and the 100 for the price of that... with change to spare!
Cap0ne
3rd of October 2007 (Wed), 07:23
-AF is identical.
-Construction is identical.
-both are sharp even wide open
-85 mm has more CA.
-More backround blur (aka smaller DOF) with 100@f2 than with 85@f1.8
-with 100 you can make "tighter" portraits (aka more magnification).
-differences in shutter speed between f1.8 and f2 are very small.
-of course, longer reach with 100mm.
Both are superb prime lenses. Fast, sharp, great color and contrast. Now it depends only on your needs. You can't go wrong with neither of them ;)

It had a slight back focus problem, which was a real pain with far off subjects. Like I said, I just got it back a few days ago, and it seems extremely sharp at all distances. I'm pretty happy with it.

I ran across one of these in a local shop the other day. Read up on them here, then bought it this morning kind of on a whim. I really like it so far.

After months and months of waiting, I finally got it. I am in loooove! I finally pulled the trigger on it because one of my favorite artists is performing tonight and I didn't know if my 50mm would get me close enough. I'll be back to post after the show! Here are some tests shots straight out of the cam. Nothing too exciting, I just wanted to make sure it worked :)

Just got my 100 f2 today and snapped a few to test it. I have to say that I am amazed at how sharp this lens is and even though I am not a portraiture shooter, I think it would serve quite well in that capacity.

This is my main lens for weddings.
Used to have a 85/1.8, but I prefer the 100/2 - love the focallength on a 1.6 crop body, as sharp and a bit less CA.
Hope to own one some day.

As much as I really like this lens, I'm considering selling it to fund the purchase of a 135mm f/2 L. I am really drawn to the extra color, contrast, sharpness, and the longer reach. I shoot with a 5D, often outdoors on city streets.

Nice pics guys, I especially like the first pictures of both Qwest905 and ieatstars.
This is a very nice lens, which perfectly fits on a small camera like the 400D. Unfortunately there's bad CA at great apertures, especially when you use it outside in sunny conditions.
Recently I used this lens for (my first) model photography at a Photography Experience. Many many photographers, but I think I was the only one who didn't use a flash, thanks to this lens! This is my favourite picture (ISO 200, the noise is from the black/white-conversion):

I think you should keep that picture the way it is now, it's very nice and stylish. The lighting is perfect, and both the girl and the dress are beautiful. I think revealing more of her leg would make the picture less elegant, and also would make the girl too tall I think, especially in black/white. The only thing I don't like is the big white brick in the background.
OH MY GOD I already sound like a photographer... Maybe I'd better first shoot a proper picture myself...

Just to clarify...I shot those with a 40D. I'm not sure where you got 5D from, but no big deal. The carriage shot is 3200 ISO, and the other is 1000 ISO.
But I'm glad you like it!

Pointless. I chose it over the 85 because I felt 85mm would be too close to my other lenses. This lens has a distinct place among my 50mm and 24-70mm. Also, I have a 5D so there's no magnification. I wanted some length without getting a 70-200 or 100-400.

Does anyone have any pictures taken with this lens and extension tubes for macro photography? I am trying to decide between the 100mm f2.8 macro, the 85mm f1.8 and this lens.
Mainly between the 2 100mm ones because I think it will be a better focal length for me on the 5D.
I don`t shoot a lot of macro so that is why I am leaning more towards this lens and also because it is faster and smaller. I would still like to see how it performs with extension tubes.
