Sunday decided to go to my local race meeting at Knockhill even though my two telephoto lenses were at the manufacturers for repair, so only had the 18-50mm lens.

Thought I would try and practice panning technique, but when trying to take my first shot wondered why nothing happened....the clue was in the message NO CF CARD........damn, Id been working on some pics a few days ago and left all my 1GB cards on my desk, luckily found a 500MB card at the bottom of my bag, so thought RAW was out but plenty of jpegs to play with.

Anyway here are a few from that day

Nice :D I especially like no 1 and no 3, the red cars just pop on my screen!

cool

panning with a diddy little lens is great fun, you can go right down on the shutter speed and still get some nice results

Thanks for your replies.

Is there any rule of thumb for shutter speed and focal length for panning.

I Know the one of inverse the focal length for general shots.

Most of my shots on Sunday were 100 or 125, tried going down to 60th, but I was not good enough to keep it sharp.

I'm hoping it's a technique you pick up with practice, as Sunday was my first attempt also.

PS, realy like your first shot.

Nice shots! I see Will Hourie is back racing, is he still towing from the Orkney Isles? He was quite a talent back in the eighties. Is fellow Orcadian Ali Thom still racing legends? I used to race karts with these guys when I lived in Scotland too many years ago to remember.

Post more please.

lovely examples of panning , and very enjoyable pics. the last looks a bit " rich " in colour on my screen but otherwise lovely.

freefallu,

I would agree with you that I probably went a bit far with the saturation with the last one. I sometimes feel reds on my monitor often look too saturated, even if Ive not done any adjustment.

Thanks for the comment, at least I know my monitor is set up similair to somebody elses.

Protruck,

sorry dont know too much about the actual racers. Will they remember your name? As I could have a word with them next time Im there, but think this was the last race of the season. If you were really interested in looking up these people, Knockhill administration may be able to help or pass on information.
