View Full Version : Positive experience at J&R in NYC

I just picked up a Canon 50mm f/1.8 from J&R in downtown NYC. The store is clean, bright, huge (it's about half a block in all, but not all of it is photo-related), and well stocked. The sales people were friendly (as friendly as they get here in NYC) and knowledgeable and did not try to hustle or up-sell me in any way. The guy I talked to didn't even try to sell me a UV filter!

Their prices are good and, most importantly to me, their web prices are the same as in-store. That's not the case in many camera shops in NYC. Also, you can order over the web and pickup at the store later. Also, I called to check stock status, and they didn't get angry I wasn't buying and just asking questions. Try that in Crooklyn.

I got the lens for $74.88 and a Hoya UV filter for $9.99. Not too shaby. Their selection is not as good as B&H, but they do have a nice selection of L glass, as well as EX Sigmas.

I recommend J&R for walk-in purchases, and it seems their mail order is good as well (although I can't directly vouch for it). Shipping is cheap, too, by the way.

I agree. JandR is not a photography mecca like B+H. They don't have alot of things. But they have a thirty day no hassle return policy on most things. I have bought camera bodies and lenses from them. I bought and returned a Nikon D100 from them without any problems before I bought my 10D. I bought most of my Nikon film equipment from their web site. www.jr.com.
