Dont know if this belongs here, so if not then please move mods. :-)

I followed the directions I got here: http://www.diyphotography.net/homestudio/chaep-diy-muslin-photography-background

It turned out awesome, it could have been a tad darker but I am happy with the results.
I left it in the dye for 30 minutes, next time I will go with 45 minutes. It took me about 2 hours from start to finish (including washing and drying it).

I will post pics tomorrow since my mom (gotta love mothers), is hemming the edges so it wont fray. (FREE LABOR!)

The total cost of the 9'X9' muslin, including the RIT dye was $18US.

Since it turned out so well I will be making more colors.

Not a bad price. I've purchased from Amvona's ebay site and got a 10x16 black muslin for around $30 and a 10x12 white for around $25. Might save a little money in the process by making them yourself but for some things, I'm just too lazy! I got a huge scenic muslin (10x20) for like $70 too. It was crazy cheap compared to similar auctions and buying off of their site.

Post some pics!

what scenic did you get? post a pic of it. please.

I enjoyed making it myself, and feel the sense of accomplishment after I opened it and saw how it came ot.

Ok, finally got the muslin hemmed. Looks good I think.

Here is a pic of it draped over my couch, too lazy to set up a stand.
The second pic is a 100% crop of the muslin so you can see the pattern. Next one I do I will be keeping it in the dye for 45 minutes instead of 30 minutes, hoping to get richer colors.

What are you paying for shipping on these muslins? I went to his ebay store and say shipping from $15-$35.

it's nice to pay $10 for a large muslin, but when you have to add $25 for shipping it kinda makes you not want to buy it.

cgratti,

The shipping is high (higher than their official site). However, the price may still come out drastically lower than buying them direct from Amvona (versus off of ebay). I actually won that scenic muslin for $55... add shipping and it was like $73 total. I got the white muslin (10x12) for $30 shipping included... and a 10x16 black muslin for $50 (I didn't do very well on that auction... it can be had for much cheaper).

I agree the prices are MUCH cheaper from buying direct from an online retailer. I would like a scenic and maybe I will be looking into that in the near future. For now, I will try and make a few more of my own and see what outcome that brings in the photos.

A question Re Muslin fabric.

Is it a mesh type fabric, is it also quite thin and lite material?

I ask this as a fabric store didn't have any and I would like to be sure what I'm looking for.

Cheers

It's thin and lite. you can buy thinker stuff, but the stuff I got was thin.

It's more or less a cotton bedsheet.
