Hi,

I've just joined this forum as there seems to be a lot of interesting discussion and a lot of knowledge around. This, my first post, is by way of an introduction.

My name's Phil and I've been using SLR's (EOS 1000 then EOS 5) on and off for a few years although I never really got particularly good at it, although I did dabble in B&W processing. Recently though, I picked up a 300D as I fancied a silver camera  . So far I've been more than happy with the camera as it does everything I want to do at this point in time. Maybe next year I'll upgrade but for the time being I have plenty to learn.

Here's (hopefully) a photo I took last week on a sunny welsh beach. Apologies if it should have been in the "Share Photos" forum.

Anyway, I look forward to using this forum and hopefully be able to add something to the mix.

All the best,
/Phil.

Welcome, Phil.

Guys with silver cameras are welcome. The picture is quite lovely---what lens was it taken with?

Thanks Tom, it's the kit 18-55 lens. I know it's not the most sturdy piece of kit but it seems to do the job admirably.

To the contrary----that's the best $100 zoom lens you're ever likely to see in your lifetime. I really can't imagine buying the Drebel body without that lens just to save a few bucks.

Tom :)

Welcome to the Forum Phil!

Tom's right on about that lens. It's a bargain and a great piece of glass that only 300D owners can touch. Looks like you're already putting it to good use!

Welcome to our not-so-humble abode, Phil. You'll find lot's of great info and many tongues buried firmly in cheeks when you visit here.

Nice photo, by the way and yes, we certainly do share photos in here too.

Nothing wrong with that 18-55. Nice wide lens. Wider than what I currently have!

Hi Nolz and Phil. Welcome to both of you. I'm not familiar with that lens, Phil, but it looks pretty good.

And though you can learn while lurking, it's not nearly as much fun. :D

Welcome, and feel free to blame us for any future significant expenditure, even if its not for camera gear...

Cool Nolz. We can make this a group welcome thread for sure! Congrats on the camera and yes, you WILL buy L-glass. ;) When you see the difference in the quality of the photos shot, L-glass becomes a necessity.

One day you can be a Top Contributor like Jim or Tom here. The ladies sure dig that. I'm still trying to figure out how to get that calling ???

Welcome Phil and Nolz,
I still feel like a newcomer though I have already been visiting the forum for 6 months and a member for about 4. Time flies when you're having fun and anyway with Tom (belmondo) and CDS here I'll probably always feel like a newcomer.
A word of warning you will have to have one extremely strong constitution to keep from maxing out the credit cards if you visit much, but the money will be well spent especially when you follow the advice of the experienced contributors who are regulars here.
I Just got my first L glass yesterday, 400mm/5.6L, and can't wait for some reasonable weather.
Again welcome and enjoy the forum.

I have spent a lot more money since I got on here. I too have a 300D. I bought just the body and have just ordered the 18-55 on eBay. I should have bought the kit since the lens is going for close to $150 on eBay now. I am also expecting the BG E1 grip in the mail today, bought the obligatory 50MM 1.8, a 75-300, extra battery and I now see in the "What's in your (CF) wallet" thread that I do not have nearly enough CF cards. ;)

Thanks for all the welcomes.

Ovi, I know what you mean. I've spent most of the day thinking about buying a X's Drive.

Welcome Phil and Nolz,

The forums here are nice - helpful fellow photographers and a relaxed atmosphere. I know some forums on other websites that are either full of people making eachother crazy or people who are only there to show off their superior technical knowledge.... the forums here are my favourite.

Have fun!

There's a fundamental difference between this forum and the bikers. Over there, they like to make loud noises and scare old ladies. Here, we are genteel artists.

Last Christmas, I heard a choir singing, "No L, No L, No L, No L". And the devil was beaten then.

Superb.

Just glad my wife does not know how much more L glass is than the norm, I am slowly replacing non L for L but have not yet dared buy one of the white jobs, they should also do them in "stealth" black for us attached folk!

Perhaps you start painting your normal lens with white first.

Oh yeah, forgotten to welcome our Phil, Nolz and Jim Larson. I'm also new here, just have been a bit longer than you three.

I think that would only confirm the madness she already suspects. I get the "so why do you need another new lense?" enough as it is!
