View Full Version : Display Topics Request

Pekka,
The new forums seem to be running nicely. Well done!
I have a feature request relating to the option controlling the time period for which posts are displayed. Could this be made "sticky" in some way? As a regular visitor, it's convenient just to show the last day's posts, but this option reset when I change to another forum.
Best choice would be to have a profile option.

I second this request, having just experienced the following:
I was browsing through the posts listed under "View Posts Since Last Visit," hitting the browser's "back" button to return to the list after reading a post. At one point, about 2/3rds through, I had reason to switch to another open browser window to review something unrelated to this site. A few seconds later I returned to find that the list apparently reset itself and gave me the message "No topics or posts met your criteria."
Some forums do have trouble with "power browsing" but a feature like the one Roger requested would be a nice way around the problem.

Roger:
One easy workaround:
- Click "Search"
- Put an asterisk in the Search for Author field
- Under Search Options, select Search Previous "1 Day"
- Leave the Sort By settings at the defaults of Post Time and Descending
- Click the Search button
Gets the job done.

In slejhammer's case,. (and I think this might be what your talking about as well Roger?) the trick may not be the forum or any settings that can be adjusted, but how you use the "View Posts Since Last Visit" feature.
If you click on a given link and leave the site entirely,. you will be logged out. (otherwise long after you leave the list below will still say you are on line. It's a cookie thing)
The method that eliminates the chance of loosing the "View Posts Since Last Visit" list is to keep those search results open in there window at all times. Rather clicking on a subject directly,. thus leaving the page of search results entirely,. you can either;
Right click, select "open in new window" from the menu, or:
Hold the "Shift" key while clicking on the link thus opening the desired thread in a new window.
This way you will never lose the search results gained from "View Posts Since Last Visit" button.
Another great trick is that after you have gone through and answered some posts,. if you have NOT ever left the initial search results page (ei: if you opened threads in there own new window) then you can hit the "refresh" button of your browser on the search results page,. and none of the meassages initially displayed will be removed,. they will just be rearanged in the order with which any subsequent posts have occured as well as adding any newer posts to the list.
Hope this helps :)

The post since last visit helps, but it would be a lot more sensible to have the posts grouped by forum. I'd still like to have the time period sticky, though.
