View Full Version : I want IS in a TC...

Would this even be possible? Seems like someone could make some money... Just think of all those medium range primes and zooms that you can already handhold becoming handholdable at 2X with IS in the TCon.

I've been wanting the same thing for quite a while.

Foremost, adding IS to a TC would certainly make it bigger and lose more IQ on the lens. Secondly, I'm not sure on this, but I think IS is customized for each lens regarding which element moves, etc. Thirdly, prices will have to shoot up to around $800 minimum for the IS version if it's possible. Lastly, Canon already has IS options for focal lengths from 24mm and up and the medium range primes can let in enough light that most of the time it's not necessary to add IS (and a lot more cost to each lens).

I really like this idea. not sure of the practicality. But I like the idea. Now if it could be made so there is not stop loss....:)

I would have to say that making it no stop loss/reduced stop loss would be even better than adding IS to it!

AND an aperature increaser. Make my 1.2Ls into f/-1.2

Yeah the idea sounds peachy fun but practically speaking I don't know.
I love Dante's idea of light gain. Maybe it would have a little MAG flashlight or something aimed at the sensor.
I'm obviously no engineer.

LOL now that would be COOL!!! But to quote the immortal words of Scotty, "Ye cannae change the laws of physics, Captain!" :D

excellent idea i wonder if such a thing isbeing or is going to be made

I wouldn't want a TC, rather just a group of IS elements in a tc-like design without aperture loss that can make any lens into an IS lens. It could be insanely expensive..I wouldn't care. The benefit would be great. However, no doubt this would usher in a whole new line of lenses.

I can hear it now... the cries of foul from all those 70-200 IS owners... :D

Anyone know where the moveable elements in an IS lens actually sit? I've got a feeling it's the rear set which would make a combined TC/IS unit at least slightly feasible...

as for applying different stabilisation for different lenses - just think about the Leica M8 announcement with a new mount that can check the lens that is attached - no reason why Canon's system (which they must have as the EXIF data tells you what you used) couldn't be used by our TC/IS unit to modify it's performance...

This is sort of the wishing of a EFS lens going on a FF body. Might be possible but would never be feasable.

i still say stick IS into the bodies so all your lenses, third party and all, will be IS!!

I doubt Canon will do that anytime too soon. It would dramatically cut into their IS lens sales, which is where they make the most money. So until other companies all do it and create strong pressure for Canon to follow suit, nothing will happen.

I remeber wishing for Sigma to make an IS TC type attachment right after they announced there first OS lens, but I don't think it would work well,. too bad it would be awesome!

While we're in the dream world of "it would be really cool if they had this...", I'd like to say that my dream TC (withing laws of physics) would probably let the lenses have 5 stop IS, 1/3 the apeture loss it currently has, and use flourite, whitewater glass, and other exotic stuff to keep IQ as high as possible. Oh, and it has to have 2 cup holders too! ;)

Canon makes an IS adaptor for one of it's video lenses.
It goes on the front, not the back of the lens.

Canon IS Attatchment (http://www.cusa.canon.com/html/industrial_bctv/p_efp_eng_IS_20BII_intro.shtml)
I though it only worked on the 20x, but it looks like it works on a heap of lenses.

anyone have a siggie with OS? anyone know if they work as good as the canon IS? anyone have $3000.00 they can give me?
(just thought Id ask!)

I would be much more interested in that than IS. I have never been very thrilled with IS.

That is very interesting. Now seeing that it is possible to create an inter-lens IS device without much loss in IQ, I think that Sigma would probably be the 1st to create such a device for photography. Canon certainly wouldn't do that until after someone pioneers it for us.

Because it would be adding elements there would be a corrosponding light loss.
But...
Would you be happy to lose 1/2 a stop but gain 3 stops due to the IS?
Across (almost) all your lenses?
Price wise would you spend $1000 on IS?
And have it work on (almost) all your lenses?
I want it the size of a Kenko 1.4xTC thanks.

There is no light loss on the Canon IS attatchment. Doesn't seem to effect image quality either.
It works really well, but is pretty expensive.
I'm surprised Canon don't make one for stills.
