This particular lens just got updated relatively recently from the 28-70/2.8L and with the 24-105/4 I wouldn't anticipate an update any time in the next 2-4 years. Unless the rumor of the 2X format are true then all bets are off.

lenses don't get updated anywhere near as fast as cameras.

nah, i mean an update in the form like a 24-70 f2.8 L IS, or just the same 24-70 f2.8 L but with better af or whatever... what is that 2x format about?

and do you think its still wise to purchase the 24-70 now?

Now is a good time to purchase the 24-70/2.8L

While eventually they may add IS to the 24-70/2.8L I suspect it will be at least a year or two. Also take into account that there will be a small drop in quality with IS (probably not noticeable, but there).

There have been no rumors of a 24-70 upgrade in the works and the earliest one would be likely to occurr would be PMA, so you will get at least 5-6 months of use out of yours before a new lens comes out. That is a pretty good bet.

As to the 2X format: It is a rumor that Canon is planing on releasing a camera with a double 35mm format sensor (using two sensors side-by-side - long side together). To compete with medium format cameras. The rumor is they will have lenses designed to work with both the 2X format cameras and with an adapter work with the current format cameras. The interesting part is the camera will apparently be designed to shoot with existing EF lenses as well as the new 2X lenses, but in a crop mode. If true this would be a very cool upgrade path and would potentially compete well with Hasselblad without pissing off current Canon users. This is only a rumor, but comes from medium reliability sources so could be something Canon is thinking about or prototyping, but may not have developed. Cost will be high though.
