What is the average life span of a d30?

Kind of depends on how much you use it!
Not sure if you mean mechanical lifespan or if you mean "useability" lifespan. For technical, I think there are some that have put thousands of frames through it and its still going strong. I've not heard of any that have completely died yet.
For useability, well I think its got another 4-5 years or so before we're all so enamoured with having 12 MP and/or the Faveon technology that we'd view using the D30 as something of a retro step - then again we all know what its capable of!
I don't think I'd ever sell mine, its a great backup for what comes next and will surely be a "classic" of its time for its image quality alone (certainly not for the AF :)!)

Interesting, but I guess what I'm asking is more along the line of how long will the CMOS sensor keep working. But I guess as with any part of the camera, that is a variable.
Does Canon give a life span for the sensor? Or are we the ones that get to tell them?

Don't worry about the CMOS sensor, worry about the mechanics.
I have seen several reports of D30 shutter failure at 20k-40k shots. One such user mentioned that Canon did not want to fix the shutter under warranty when it failed at at 32k shots.
I currently have two D30s. One at over 40k shots, and one just under 20k. I worry about this failure mode on a regular basis.

32k isn't a lot.

Just wondering - why do you have two D30s? And, will you be getting a D60?
Thanks.
