A quick question for Drebel owners.
Can you use the E1 hand strap on a Drebel or do you new the battery grip as well to do this?
Thanks

John,
I don't have the 300D so can say for sure. But on the 10D you do need the vertical grip fitted so that the bottom half of the strap has something to connect to.
I would assume it is the same for the 300D.
Cheers

thanks, that was what i was thinking too. If the 10D doesnt without the battery grip then the drebel wont either.
Thanks

I don't have my DRebel with me right now but I am 95% sure you have to have a vertical grip to add a hand strap. I just got the VG for Christmas and a hand strap is in my future!! Do they make one that has a quick release or something on it? It's on the same side as the CF card and b/c I have never actually used one on this camera I am not sure if it is going to make getting the card out difficult!! If no one has confirmed this I'll check when I get home!

Yes, you do need the BG-E1 for the handstrap to work properly. Consider that due to the length of the strap you need the extra inch or so of height the batter grip adds, and moreover there's a little slot on the battery grip for the bottom of the strap to wrap around.
There isn't a quick release on the strap, you have to undo the strap (it isn't a big deal). There is a provision for keeping the neck strap too, but I can't see using both.
You really can't use the strap without the grip because the battery door is there and there isn't any way to attach the bottom of the strap.
I use a quick release plate on the tripod mount, and I've been thinking of adding some kind of metal strap or something between the camera and the QR plate to hold the bottom of the hand strap when the battery grip isn't installed. The hand strap would wrap under the camera over the battery door. I don't know if it would stay in place though.

I did just that, using a 1/16" stainless steel rod. 2 holes was drilled into the aluminum QR plate using drill bit that are 2 drill size smaller. The rod is bent into a U shape and the ends are hammered into the holes. This setup is so secured that the hook on the camera, the nylon web as before as the bones in your hand would break before the rod would be pull from the holes.

Ken:
Sounds interesting...
What type of QR plate are you using? The Manfrotto 3299 I have is dovetailed, so I'm not sure if I could do the same mod as you as it will interfere with the base on the tripod.
Can you post a picture (or PM me and I'll post it for you)?
Thanks

Dave,
I'm using a Really Right Stuff (Arca-Swiss compatible) QR plate.
