I'm looking for an ultra wide prime to go with my 5D, something sub 18mm and $900 US or less? Any suggestions?

Given the requirement and the budget, You have the:
Canon 15mm Fisheye
Sigma 14mm Fisheye
Sigma 8mm Fisheye
And at the price marker the Sigma 14mm f2.8 Prime.

That's about it for the 5D for primes.

Sigma 14mm has been reviewed as being sorta soft compared to 16-35 or 17-40L. You can find it here (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/14-vs-16.shtml). Though there is sample variation to consider, IQ shouldn't differ by much from the reviewed lens. If you really need 14mm, then by all means get it and use software shaprpening to enhance the images. Otherwise, there's sharper L lenses in the 16-17mm department. :)

Thanks. I think I will go with what I have until someone comes up with something better at my price point.

I wish I could find the Sigma 14 2.8 prime! I haven't used it, but from what I have seen picture wise it is my pick

It is listed as in stock at Calumet and B&H.

I hate to buy lenses online, like to use it at the store to make sure I like it first! Although I may have to break down and do so, cause none of the local shops ever have it or any uwa primes for that matter

If you have or are getting a 17-40L, which is "sub 18mm", why do you want another lens? Are you looking for a fisheye?

I've got a Sigma 14 f2.8, it's not a fisheye, but a rectilinear lens. I like it a lot,
but I'm using a crop camera. I don't know how it'll work on a full frame.

I was looking for a prime, non fisheye, that would be sharper than the above zoomed wide, especially in the corners, on a FF body.

If you are in Orange County, CA, then there is a Calumet store in LA. Give them a call if you make it into town. I find them helpful.

It's a shame Canon dosen't make a prime rectilinear lens in the 16-18mm range. I have heard a bit about Tokina's 17mm f/3.5 but can't give you any personal experence info.

Just to provide an answer. No

I currently have none of those lenses although the Sigma 8mm fisheye is on my wish list.

To be honest you may be best off with your 17-40 unless you are looking to a prime for very low distortion in archetecture work etc.

The other alternative is wide non-EF mount lenses from Contax etc. Others will be able to advise you better in that area than I but you are looking at a big budget.

Once again I wish to say, "Thank you!" to all who replied. It does seem that what I am looking for is not out there for the moment.

However, I did call my local photo shop to confirm that they had the 5D and 17-40L in stock and will pick them up today. They will have to do. :D
