What is everyone's thoughts on using strobes on the big day? I've not done alot of research into the matter but it would seem that it would make a difference.

So what do you guys think?

Are you talking about "on camera strobes" or are you talking about strobes set up on stands? I always use my 550 flash mounted on my Stroboframe Pro-T flash bracket. I consider that my "strobe". If your talking about setting up your "Alien Bees"....I would say No....dont do it.

Studio strobes take too long to set up for me to regularly use them for wedding work. I always take them with me, especially if we're doing formals in a dark church. I once used them for a regular wedding that ran late, we did the group photos inside with a single AB800 (as there wasn't space for two) and it worked well.

Off camera strobes. I use my sigma on my camera.

Thanks Tim, this is what I was getting at. It would seem that if you get two large strobes setup off to each side with large softboxes on them it would lit up the area pretty well.

Even with umbrellas, which are up quickly, they're pretty slow. I allow maybe 10-15 minutes to the stands up, the lights and umbrellas on them, the lights plugged in and the cords taped down, and metering. If you can set up beforehand it only takes a few minutes.

Usually I'm there before everyone else so setting up wouldn't be a problem. They would also be fired using a PW system. I'm just doing a little thinking outside the box here, nothing set in stone. Just trying to gather ideas.

We carry 4x Elinchrom Prolinca heads, umbrellas, soft-box, stands and 2x triggers in the car. They are there purely as a safety-net ...and, so far, we haven't felt the need to use them at a wedding.

I do all my "alter formals" using two monolights (600w/s each) with umbrellas using wireless metering and triggering. Takes 5-10 minutes to set-up and less than 5 to tear down. I am much happier with the results than I was when using single or multiple flash setups.

Scott - real 600W/S? ie my ABs are 800 effective W/S but only 320 actual, from memory.

Tim...with all the marketing "gimmicks" used I have to say I honestly can't say for sure. All their literature say 600w/s and nothing else. Here is the kit (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=386791&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation). And the manufacturer's page (http://www.interfitphotographic.com/Lighitng/Lighting%20index.htm).

I haven't used studio strobes at a wedding for almost fifteen years.

Heck, even the batteries in my Speedlite lasts me for about 2-3 jobs easy.:D

Personally, I use strobes whenever possible for the formals and not too long ago, for the ceremony. I was able to set them up in the balcony for the ceremony and I must say that I've never had such good exposure and lighting for a wedding ceremony.

Bit of an atmosphere killer, though, isn't it?

It could be but I carried two bodies, one using the strobes via a pocket wizard and the other for ambient light shots. Not to mention that the lighting in the church was very basic and didn't provide much of an "atmosphere" to begin with.
