hi all, thanks for the entries. here are some comments : )

an33sh : 'no title' This delighted me as it was the first photo after a very long period after opening the challenge. I thought there was going to be no photos this week! :O oh i was happy with the outcome. So, about this photo, it stuck in my mind for a few reasons. 1. It has printed text, yet a strangely placed dry paint brush above it, and very prominatly within the frame! This was kind of confusing. 2. I could not seem to focus on any key word in this composition, apart from "the stru-" to the right. The main word in the picture (subg**up) I feel could have have been better placed, and with no obtrusive obstructions (am I allowed to say that? Is it correct English?). I do like the tarnished colour to the photo though, and the dream-like abstract qualities are alluring, albeit confusing. It also has a lovely retro feel to it, and seems almost straight out the set of a 1970's detective show. If the 'key' word was more in focus, and had more significance, I could have easily picked this as a winner.

alans220 : 'Inviting Writing' I did send you a PM that this was not the correct size (it is supposed to be 640px on the longest side) and it would have been in the running for a placement if it was fitting, but I have to stick to the rules. It is certainly 'Inviting Writing', and the colours and angles of the shot make it even more inviting. Greek I am pressuming from the Fonts (PYRA ALFA - alfa beer?)

marie : 'old and true' Lovely to read this very 'life like' capture (with the black ribbon for keeping the page - I am sure this ribbon has a specific name) It think I would have focused more on a certain 'part' of the text, for example 'Are these words true?' and blurred the rest. That would have been quite abstract, confusing, but also pleasing. Well done as always.

boutty : 'Ettamogah Pub - Beer Ads' as always another visually beautiful photo from Das Boutty. I have a feeling the words could have had more emphasis. There is a lot going on is this picture that distracts from the fonts themselves. But still, a vibrant and stylistic piece. Looks like you have used a polariser filter for this with such rich dark blue skies. Have you? Or explain your post production secrets :) If taken again, I think I would have concentrated more on the text as opposed to all the surroundings, but everyone has there own tastes :)

Sara : 'Gone but definitely not forgotten' A moving bi-lingual image signifying a morbid moment in history. Compositionally; a lovely natural frame with the surrounding stone work. Very strong, powerful but saddening words. I am a bit of a sucker for 'straight lines' and if it could be captured again, it may benefit from being a 'straight on' capture so not to 'skew' the angles, but everyone has differing opinions on 'straight lines'.

mistergibbon : 'Greats @ Boson public library' Ah, Sir Gibbon, nice to see you back here with an entry for this week. Where is this taken? well, of course it is Boson Library (I can tell from the title), but maybe you can explain where it is? All these names are tough to read, although I recognise a few, such as Faraday and, erm, that is about it :( I sadly do not find it the most appealing image, quite possibly as I do not recognise these 'great' names, but for other people, I am sure it means a lot.

AndreyD : 'Store #3' I like this very Russian way of numbering places (Store #8, State BallBearing Factory #1, etc). I like also the muted colours, but in this picture I feel the 'wording' does not play as big a role as it could. It is too small within the frame. Next time, i think you can get closer and make more emphasis of the wording (looks like it says 'MAGAZIN #3' to me, is that the Russian word for 'Store'?)

rpolitsr : 'City Hall's Stamp' This is more like it! Straight into the action and homing in on the fonts with little else distraction. It does however seem more of an 'acronym' than a word, and I am not sure if 'Acronyms' count as 'words'. Still there is a word (Semaforizacion) but I do not know what it means :( Would you care to share the translation?

So here are the placings:

1. an33sh : 'no title' (OK, so I changed my mind and chose this as a winner. Well done. I think it was the 'dreamy' abstract qualities that REALLY got to me in the end, and made me choose it!)

2. Boutty : 'Ettamogah Pub - Beer Ads'

3. rpolitsr : 'City Hall's Stamp'

I hope the comments were not too blunt. I want to say a thanks to everyone for making a unique effort in posting to this challange...

I was going to post the Egyptian way of writing 'Andrew' and other names beginning with the letter A, but decided not to
it looked a bit daft when I photographed it from the book
but if you are ever stuck 'when in Egypt ' I can show you what your name looks like, just in case you need it
..........for any reason

Congratulations an33sh and Boutty for the well deserved first and second places.

Thank you andrewaaa5 for the third place and the comments.

You are right, EMOP is an acronym. I was in doubt about posting it, but then I thought that EMOP is as well known locally as UNESCO is known all over the world, and both are used as real words.

What I like most on my picture is the cityscape outline used by the City Hall, which is not a word, of course but it is nice :)

It is a stylized outline of roofs and church domes of the old colonial downtown. Do you remember this picture of mine?

http://sites.google.com/site/rpolitsr/r_polit_2/pictures/potnresized/89_cityoutline_7960.jpg

I posted it with my doors series (http://sites.google.com/site/rpolitsr/galleries/doors) in another challenge, and it may illustrate the source of the outline with a simple stroke in Photoshop.

SEMAFORIZACION was not the most important word in my original idea. Semáforo means Trafic Light (mainy those red-yellow-green but also other traffic signals as railroad signs), and Semaforización refers to all the necessary installations required to keep the Traffic Lights operative, and the picture was of a manhole cover of that installations.

Excuse me the large explanation of a word. :p

erm, you get to choose and judge the next topic, so please put on the thinking cap and think up a subject for everyone to follow : )

Congrats an33sh & rpolitsr for your top spots. Great shots all round as usual. ;)

Excellent job andrewaaa5. Thanks for your most in depth comments for everyone.

rpolitsr, thanks for sharing the lovely doors gallary and the story of your shot.

andrewaaa5, you are right about the polariser filter. Best effect when you are shooting an object 90* to the sun.

The pub is a working-model-pub from an Aussie comic book located almost exactly half way between Sydney and Melbourne. Just in case you guys and gals are wondering what the hack that yellow sign on the roof - here it is. (I still could not work out the meaning of the sign - To keep right but it points left... Can you have a guess? )

Congratulations to an33sh, Boutty and rpolitsr for the great pictures and of course to andrewaaa5 for hosting the competition (and tempting me out of hiding ;)).

I was in two minds as to whether to post this image or not. The one thing that really bugs me about it is the fact that it was taken slightly off centre - resulting in the image not being symmetrical . However, I love the stonework of the bulding and also the windows, so I posted it anyway.

As for the 'great' names, I agree, the only one that really jumps out is Faraday (well, and Volta, and Ampere, and Boyle...), however, certainly the first 2 columns contains great scientists and I'm not sure about the 3rd column but a quick google search leads me to believe that they are more arty in fame.

FYI I have attached a google image (not sure of the copyright implications, but I think this qualifies as "personal, non-commercial use") to show you where the photo was taken from.

Once again, great photos everyone and nice one Andrew.

Paul.

I was also torn between your picture and Boutty’s; both are certainly the top most, and we know about andrewaaa5’s preference for some blurred regions in his pictures :)

Boutty, about the roof sign (it is beautiful!): after a few beers who matters for an arrow pointing the other way??

mistergibbon I like your picture a lot, and those names reminded me of a list of assignments during my technically oriented studies :)

I like the orders just the way they are! ;) That way, I can still submit a picture for this week. Sorry for your idel time spending as a host and judge.

how did you get colours so rich and beautiful?
Cheers. I was lucky to have carry the filters on my trip. As mentioned, it was just a 58mm polariser filter attached the my 58mm lens adaptor. Oh! And a thin layer (20%) of warming filter (85) from Photoshop's Photo Filter. (Image>Adjustments>Photo Filter)

He knows how to tickle the judge I think!?!

That makes sense for me now. Good thought sir! :p

Yes, you right, it's Magazine, which in English means Store and here, on picture, it was all purpose Store, where you could by everything you need for daily life in the rural area of far away Russia. Shot was purely accidental, just was passing by and was on the other side of the channel, so cannon get closer with G6 zoom capabilities.

But it looked funny for me, never seen in Moscow such a simple name for a Store. You could see lots of "Magazine" but never seen with numbers like that: Magazine #3 - as simple as that! )) So it means that there somewhere should be also Magazine #1 and Magazine #2 ))
