I am currently planning a trip to Africa for a Safari in the next year and I am thinking about purchasing a large zoom lens for my D30 to take close-up pictures of wildlife, etc. Can anyone give me feedback on picture quality with Sigma lenses and the D30. I am thinking of purchasing the Sigma 170-500mm APO lens, so if anyone has any info on that in particular, that would be great...if not, anything on Sigma would help.

I mostly shoot with primes. The only zoom that I have (and won't give up now) is the Sigma 100-300mm F4 EX HSM. I have been satisfied with its quality and results. Very sharp. I had sold the lens, but at the last minute the deal fell through. Good for me. Because I think I would have sorely missed it. It's just a tad bigger than the 70-200mm's, but you get a lot more (100mm) I have used the 1.4 teleconverter on it (140-420mm) and don't really see any degradation of quality. And this lens is easy to lug around all day. Around $1000 USA, or $750 grey. It's a thought.
