View Full Version : D20 vs D30...worth the extra cash?

Hey I've been trying to decide whether or not the price difference between the D20 and D30 is really worth the upgrade. From what I've read, it doesnt quite seem like it. Am I missing something?

Anyone have experience with either that can shed some light on the differences and whether its worth it?

Thanks

after rebates, there shouldnt be a price difference. if anything, the 30D should be cheaper.

[edit] assuming you buy brand new

worth upgrading from a 20d to a 30d? not really, unless you can do it for basically free. you'd be better off investing in lenses or other acessories and waiting for a worthy upgrade.

as someone said before a 30D post rebates should equal a 20D, even if you own one the sale on ebay plus rebates shouldn't put one out of pocket much.

If you happen to need a flash or another lens it's just another bonus...

Sorry I forgot to mention I've had a D10 for quite some time now and have been looking to upgrade it for a while...and didnt know if the differences were worth the money.

However it seems like there are some rebates that could help minimize the cost....

You should get your nomenclature correct to avoid confusing people. The proper names for the cameras are 10D, 20D and 30D. The D30 and D60 were two earlier Canon DSLR offerings. It's not a big deal, but for new people it can be confusing if the correct terminology isn't followed.

If you can swing the $1170 out of pocket the 30D had a $100 rebate, $200 if you purchase a qualifing lens or flash.

Else the 20D is well under $999 at those sites with it still in stock.

I don't think either would be bad. Your 10D sold on ebay should fetch about half the cost in most cases.

Yea, I can't ever seem to spit it out right. In my mind I always want to put the "D" first...and thats how it comes out. Sorry for the confusion! :)

You can buy the Canon 30D and Kit lens combo, and get a double rebate, without buying anything else...read the Canon FAQ's.

It's a little better than the 20D. The 30d has a larger LCD screen, Spot-Metering for those that missed it, better focus (though, I have no proof), ISO in the viewfinder, and a couple of other 'features' that the 20D didn't have.

Is it better? Maybe...is it worth it to upgrade from a 10D to a 30D? Maybe...and if you do, don't sell the 10D...as it will be a backup to the 30D. All your current lenses will be compatible...what else could you ask for? Other than that, you could wait for Canons 'Next Best Thing' while others out there enjoy taking pictures.

Good luck.

its a 20D with a few extras.. i love mine but at the time i got it, the 20D hadnt come down in price enough to make me get it so I got the 30D and love it.

Sweet, well thanks guys...looks like I'm just about sold on spending the extra up front for a little bit nicer model. With the rebate it definately helps make the decision easier. I'm going to try and get my hands on both models just to be sure...shouldnt be too hard to find a couple friends that'll let me test (if not borrow) theirs. Any siginificant changes that I'll be dissapointed in from my 10D or is it all better (or at least the same)? Thanks for the input!

Forget the kitl lens. Just get the 30D body itself. It's fairly inexpensive.

That only counts if you purchase the 17-85mm IS kit lens...the 18-55mm kit does not count toward a double rebate. I'm not sure what the used ebay value of the 75-300mm EF is, but it may be a worthy purchase then ebay item to up the rebate to $200.

I like the larger LCD screen on the 30D and spot metering will be pretty useful as well. I went from a 300D to a 30D though so that's a pretty big upgrade AFAIK.

I just ordered it on Sunday and got notification that it shipped today. I used the psaug code so the camera cost $1139-$200 mail in rebate I'll end up paying $939.

I can't wait!

Mine shipped yesterday. I had ordered it with ground shipping, then called them to upgrade shipping to two day air. It'll be here tomorrow. As of 5:45AM this morning, it was on a jet headed west.
