I've just picked up a 30D and aforementioned lens and took some shots. I'm very much an amateur as I've only owned 1 point & shoot before this. I used automatic settings and think they came out pretty good. Taken at my friends HS football game.
stat girl...I was shooting the coach and players and she caught my eye...camera or lens focused real fast and got a good shot...was impressed by the blur...first time I've done that. Taken at about 40mm
Cropped shot of her eyes...
My buddy who was with me...at 24mm

Opposing teams QB throwing a pass...at 105mm

All in all I'm pretty happy with the camera and lens. A bit expensive, but maybe I can sell some pics to help pay for the cost!
Let me know what you think...

The 100% crop looks out of focus...
And get out of the automatic modes FAST! And that means NOW!
With this lens you can pretty much use it at any aperture and get sharp pictures. I'd suggest switching to Av mode immediately.

I am very much an amateur and am still a bit confused on how to manually set my settings. I wanted to get some automatic shots and then practice manual.
I will learn and get better.

Well not knowing the EXIF data involved it could be alright I suppose. Does look a little soft but unless you didn't apply any post processing sharpening to bring out the detail in the reduced size from the original its probably about right.
If your going to invest that much funding in a super nice camera and lens, you indeed want to take the time and learn its capabilities.

The canon owner's manual. It came with your camera.
Your white balance looks like it was way off, too.
