my computer doesn't recognize the camera when i plug it into the usb slot. it says "new hardware found" and then "unknown device" and it doesn't show up on the windows explorer!! the canon software can't download either coz the p.c. doesn't see the camera..

i put the sd card into my old h.p. camera, which is also a usb, and i could download the pictures from there!

the ptp works o.k. on my laptop though which is also running win. xp.

any suggestions?

Did you install the WIA driver?

is that on the canon cd? i tried looking for it but couldn't find it! what i don't understand is the fact that it says "unknown device" when i look on control panel/system/hardware/device manager/usb controlers!!!

I connected a Canon S3 IS to a Windows XP which has never had any Canon cameras attached before and never had a Canon CD or drivers installed and it recognised it as a Canon s3 IS and even gives me an icon which looks just like the S3 in My Computer.
I think you have something wrong with your PC. Does the camera get recognised by the laptop?

yap, the laptop can see it and i can download with the camera wizard! hmmmmm, any idea what could be wrong with the p.c. since my h.p. camera works fine on it's usb port?

Without the camera connected. Try connecting to the internet, right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage", select "Device Manager". You should find the "Unknown Device" select "Uninstall". Once that is done connect your camera again, hopefully Windows will find the correct device information in its database or look on the Internet for the device definition. If you are asked for choices of places allow it to look on the internet and it would do little harm to have the Canon CD in the CD drive too.

The first time you connect h/w to a PC usually goes perfectly but unfortunately if anything goes wrong you have to manually remove Windows placekeeper as above.

Good luck.:)

If you go to "my computer" from the start menu, if you have the camera plugged in, you should be able to see and manage the camera from there, even if it is an unknown device.

i'm back in town and finally got back on my p.c., and had time to read through the manuals.. i got the p.c. to recognize the camera and download after i changed the camera download speed to "B" (page 78 or so at the back of the software manual)..

problem now is it took FOREVER to download 731 pix at full res!!!! but at lest it's better than not downloading at all, right.....

thanx for all your suggestions guys & gals..

Time for a card reader. Even with USB 2 the camera's slow. Imagine what it's like with 12-16 MP RAW shots.

well wadayahknow, i set the camera download speed back to "A" to test it, and it WORKED!!!! maybe my old desktop just needed a rest...

a card reader, hmmmmm maybe.. but would have to be an internal one if i'd expect it to read faster than the camera, right?

i don't think 731 RAW format pix would fit on a 2 gig SD card, or would they? my card was full as it was with just the jpeg's!!

Nope, an external (USB) card reader will do faster than your camera in virtually every case. They really are that much better. And even an internal reader's probably using USB.

This my 3rd digital camera and I hardly ever use the camera to USB connector. Card readers are soooo much faster and even a built into PC reader is faster than camera to USB.
