View Full Version : Just wondering, 1DIIN or 5D?

Hi everybody!
I have to get a new camera - switching from 20D - and the choices are 1DMkIIN or 5D; well, both cameras are awesome, but it seems that the difference in pricing - which isn't that big - makes me leaning more towards the 1 series...
Now, the question is: considering that in the [near] future Canon will unveil its next generation of the 1D series, is it still worth spending a considerable sum of money for one of these cameras, as I am guessing prices will drop more or less for older models? I primarily shoot landscape, architecture but also a lot of children (very dynamic by their nature :) ) and some birds/wildlife too...
I know that camera bodies have to face obsolescence quite fast so i'm wondering which of these two cameras will have a better resale value in one, maybe two years?
Thanks in advance for any input!
Regards, AWE!

My choice would be the 1D simply because its a 1D body :D

If you're thinking resale, I'd say 5D. Both will be fine for what you want to use them for, but the double rebate for the 5D brings it down to around $2100.

Unfortunately as I live in Europe, there are no significant rebates for the 5D, now a lot of stores sell them as a kit : 5D+24-105 f/4 L IS for about 3900 euros which in USD is like 4890!!! ...The 1DmkIIN body is about 3300 euros!

I'd go with the 5D unless you absolutely have to have a grip or you want the faster burst rate or f/8 AF. Resale value isn't going to be a particular issue with either, and while later models may have bigger and better this and that, the current ones will still be fully capable of taking quality photos in 2 or 3 years. I'll eventually get a 1Dsomething for the burst rate and AF, but for now the FF of the 5D tops the APS-H of the 1D IIn in my needs.
The other point to consider is whether you're going to switch from the 20D or keep both, which is what I did. There are real advantages to keeping the old one too, especially if you use both long and wide f.l. lenses.

You are leaning in the right direction. There is nothing, build wise, memory wise, interchangeable screens wise, frames per second wise, AF wise, et, like a 1 series Canon camera.

Oh, I already sold the 20D, because I cannot afford 2 cameras at the same time and the prices are dropping since the 30D hit the market, you can find 20D's for as little as 1000$ in excellent condition and way under 10k actuations!...
Seems like the 1DIIN could be a better choice, since I don't think Canon will replace it very soon, and when the time will come, the new 1DmkIII (or whatever its name will be) will not outperform the 1DII dramatically...Hopefully! :) ...

I have both the 5D and the 1DMkIIN. The two cameras have very different strengths. For focus accuracy and speed, build and sheer versatility the 1D can't be beat. The 5D has the edge with wide angle, low noise, resolution. The 5D build is more along the lines of the XXD series and in my opinion, doesn't compare to the 1D series. So, you have to determine what's important to you.

you can choose based on your experience (whether you need extra pixels, af points, etc)

If you buy a 5D before the end of October you can get a €300/£200 rebate :D

I had the same decision to make when I finally made the jump to digital. I ended up going with the 5D, and am very happy with the decision. For me, the choice came down to getting a higher resolution image and full-frame sensor versus the more robust body and higher speed continuous shooting. I think it is really a matter of what you plan on shooting. If you are more of the general photographer, portraits and the like, i would go with the 5D. If you are more into sports photography, the 8 frames per second and focus is really unbeatable on the IIn. If you get the 5D, i would highly recommend the vertical grip.. It adds some weight, but the balanced feel and extended battery life is well worth it. They are both fantastic bodies though, you won't be disappointed in any way. Good luck!

WOW, again choosing confusing thread.
I will say go for 1D as i have 1D, lol.
go for 5D as i will get FF later.
it is you who can decide, i tried all or most cameras, i finf that 5D is close to 30D just higher pixel and FF better for low light so not that big differences, but 1D, weather sealed, rocket, fast, 45 focus points so i feel it is more different than 5D/X0D/XX0D bodies.

I am biased to the 1DMIIN, awesome for sports and wildlife. But the smart money is on the 5D, how can you pass up $600 in rebates, I couldn't :)
