Would a Canon 24-85mm hood fit or do I have to get the exact lens hood that made for 85mm f/1.8? Thanks in advance.

those two hoods aren't even the same diameter!
the 85 1.8 has a unique hood with push buttons on the side and i doubt if any other canon hood will fit.

Well not that unique, As far as I know it also fits the EF100mm f2.0 USM, EF100-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM, EF75-300mm f4.0-5.6, & the EF135mm f2.8 SF :-)
The one you need is the ET-65 III

but it is the same hood, right? i meant the 85 would not take a twist on hood because it doesn't have the "threads".

I believe hoods do not attached to the same place filters do

Nobody said otherwise blam. Ed was just pointing out that the 85 f/1.8 (and a few others, including the 100 f/2) have a clip-on style hood (the ET-65III), as opposed to the bayonet style hoods that fasten to the front of the lens with a 90° twist.
I should also mention that there are some rubber hoods that will attach to the filter threads, though so far as I know none of the official Canon hoods work like this.

The EW-65II fits my 50mm f/1.8 mark 1 perfectly... even though its designed for the 35mm f/2 lens. The ET-65 III is longer and better suited for a 50mm lens...

ed mentioned a lack of threads so I assumed filter threads.
and yes, the rubber collapsable ones are threaded like filters...

What I meant Ed, was a lot of Canon's (and Nikon's hoods come to that) are a bit of a compromise on some lenses purely because they are designed to fit so many different focal lengths. They don't make many 'unique' hoods except for some of the top end 'L' tele's.

i meant the "threads" on the barrel for the twist on hoods.

The 85 F/1.8 lens hood snaps on, it does not rotate on like most hoods. Its similar to the 85L lens hood
