when i run the install check, i get the following...1. ERROR: could not create directory handle "temp"
1. Skipped directory file listing read test for "temp".
2a) Create directory handle "UPLOAD" ..... OK
2b) READ DIRECTORY LISTING: OK
3a) Create directory handle "UPLOAD/test" ..... OK
3b) READ DIRECTORY LISTING: OK
4. ERROR: could not create directory handle "UPLOAD/ee_temp_upload"
4. Skipped directory file listing read test for "UPLOAD/ee_temp_upload".
5a) Create directory handle "backup/ee_backup_files" ..... OK
5b) READ DIRECTORY LISTING: OKit seems to vary but currently i'm seeing it on steps 1,4,8,and 11...
[time passes]
hummm... i manually created admin/temp and admin/UPLOAD/ee_temp_upload and now those errors do not appear...
[time passes2]
ohhhhhhh... that also takes care of my problem with batch photo size retriever... it appears that there's a bug in something that should create a directory that doesn't... i'll have to go back and take another run at the ftp servers tests... i believe that's where i ran into the problem...

Also on UNIX this error will trigger if directory is not writeable (777).

correct...
however, the OS my server runs on doesn't have disk permissions... it is a forerunner of what became windows ;) anyway, see my edits above... it appears that there's some code not creating directories when they are needed... either that or they need to be in the archive with holder.txt files

I just wonder how come those folders were missing? They are in 2.0 upgrade package, right?

no, they are not in the EE2_upgrade.zip that i downloaded... IIRC, i downloaded two of them and then the EE_2_01_upgrade.zip...
just to note, the two are
admin/temp
admin/UPLOAD/ee_temp_upload
i do recall a temp directory being made but don't recall if it was in admin or not... if it was, it was being created by the ftp tests and my failure was due to the lack of the second one not existing or being created by the ftp testing process... remember, i found this problem when going thru the ftp servers setup tests...

I checked and they are there, if you do not see them your unzip is configured to ignore empty folders, or you ftp is set to ignore empty folders. In either case for next packages I must add something to both folders to avoid this.

i don't know what to say... i have winzip v6.2 on one box and it does not show empty directories and there's no way that i can see to tell it to do so... i haven't tried with any other zip tools like infozip and such... i always unzip to one or two boxes before copying over the LAN to the server... in this way, i try to keep at least one original factory issued version and then any possible mods... either can be easily placed on to the production server with a simple copy command ;)
yes, i'd recommend to always place a holder.txt or similar in empty directories... you can always have the installer remove them later 8)

WinZIP 6.2 is ancient. You should be able to upgrade, using the same licence key, to WinZIP 9.0 SR-1 using the download link here (http://www.winzip.com/dprob.htm). WinZIP 10 is not a free upgrade from previous versions. I keep meaning to upgrade to version 10 to get bzip2 support.

WinZIP 6.2 is ancient.while it may be ancient, it has done all i need or want it to do... it doesn't take up a lot of resources or force its way into everything i do like some other products try to do ;)

I keep meaning to upgrade to version 10 to get bzip2 support. and what happens if something breaks and goes poof!? i don't think i can cleanly back out to what i had previously... i definitely don't have any kind of images to rebuild from and no way to create any... license key? what's that? i've never had one and i've used winzip since it first appeared... used to even do the betas and play in all that ruck and muck... i don't remember when i stopped all that due to lack of time... must have been at least 5 years ago as that's when i found that life does exist outside the "big glass eye" http://www.wpusa.dynip.com/smiles/angel.gif t'was kinda hard not to notice due to the way she kept getting between me and my machines http://www.wpusa.dynip.com/smiles/devil-naughty

FWIW: i did upgrade to winzip 9 and it, too, doesn't show any empty directories in the distribution zip... hopefully pekka will remember to place small holder files in them so that they will get packed and unpacked as needed... either that or the install code needs to check for all install directories and either create them or post an understanable note to the installing person that the dirs don't exist and they need to be created...
personally, i had a rough idea due to my 20+ years of coding background but it still wasn't absolutely clear and took some SWAGing on my part ;)

In that case, it's the way you're using WinZip. If you tell it to extract the entire archive to a folder, the empty directories are there. If you CTRL and A, then choose Extract from the menu, the empty directories will be missing.

i never knew that about winzip... however, i did as you first suggest and simply told it to extract everything to a directory on my local hard drive... then that directory was copied up to the server via mass copy'n'paste in w98se... i did the upgrade stuffs and then extracted the 2.01 archive in the same manner over the originals on my local hard drive... however, this time, i also manually extracted the update files to their proper place on the server rather than doing a copy'n'paste again...
so, i just went and checked my local hard drive and i don't see those folders... now, the above was all done with the older version of winzip... i'm doing it again with the newer version to a different directory and will go have a look and see if they are there... [time passes] well, whaddayaknow? i'd'a never have thunk it...
