And no clever one liners please! :D

I was wondering where people stow their tripod's when they fly? I presume that you put them in a small carry bag, they label it up and it's put in the hold? I just can't help thinking that something that small could get lost?

I would be interested in your experiences...

Thanks

If I take my mono- or tripod, my typical luggage is a duffel by Club Glove. It is more than a meter long. I pack the -pod, in its bag, along with my clothing.

Overhead.

No issues even when I flew on Crazy English Liquid Day. Had a monopod with me too. Essentially a nightstick. Nobody said boo.

I normally pack it into my hardcase luggage. Only camera bag goes with me.

mine goes inside my case in the hold, less items to carry around and keep track of that way :)

It depends on the size of your tripod to a large degree. My tripods could possible fit in the overhead but it is a pain to carry them. I have taken my monopod on board with me but I now try and pack that in my checked luggage as well. It just raises too many questions at security. If there was a level of consistency of the application of the security rules then we would know where we stand but even within Canada they vary vastly from city to city let alone country to country.

Everything except what will fit in my Lowepro roller on bag goes into a hard sided suitcase that is locked. If I get asked to open it, I do in the presence of them and also lock it again in their presence and watch it go on its way down the baggage belt.

I have taken most of my gear (normally two hard sided cases chock full) across Canada and internationally several times. I have yet to have a problem except where one flight was late and the bags didn't make the connection but came in on the next one. Sure, bad things can and do happen to travelers. All we hear about are these ones, not the some 98% of the traveling public that get through their travels with no hassles at all.

Not over here - you get it back, but broken. It was in a bag - attached to my overnight bag.

"You have to separate them," said the checkin-in guy, "because they may get caught up on something."

"But I travelled all this distance with Q and they didn't have a problem."

"You have to separate them. It the item fragile?"

"It is a tripod."

"I'll put a nice big FRAGILE sticker on it so it will be OK."

Thereby turning it into an object of pleasure for those that 'work' on the other side of the public barriers. It arrived at the destination - smashed.

I now have a travelling tripod that folds down small enough to fit into my largest suitcase.

These seem to be some of the problems that I had envisaged. I could put it in the hold luggage but there is so little room. Mind you it looks as if I'll have to make room! :-)

Thanks for the comments

Careful with carry on...they might mistake it for a weapon ;)

In my suitcase. Got a small, light one for air travel purposes.

mine in my checked-in luggage, in between my clothes. Fits across just nicely.

Mine fits in my carry-on bag nicely. Haven't had a problem yet.
