I've had my D30 about a year longer than you so my frustration level isn't quite as high. I had the same reaction not long after I bought a 75 MHz computer - they came out with a 150 MHz for about the same price! (For cars, there is the same issue but the technology doesn't increase as fast)
These cameras are to be seen as computers to which one attaches glass instead of monitor or printer etc and we'll have to get used to it - I now acknowledge that, whenever I buy a computer, I sign on to the (rapid) obsolescence rate. The only way to avoid this is never to buy one and never have one.

it's great that the d60 is so affordable.
and as far as paying 3500 for a d30 when they came out, or 2200 later, the following proverb make bring comfort.
He who hesitates is lost.
Consider what you got out of the d30, how much more you're going to get, and what the price of a d60 or the next model will be when you're ready for a new camera.
I mean, I really feel sorry for the guys who bought cd players when they were a thousand.
Buying early means you pay the cost of r/d.

I bought my D30 yesterday. I paid £1,500 and heard the D60 will be £3,000.
I hope it does not come in at the same price ....

D60, 2000$, 2200$, 3000$, buy, sell, preorder, order.
It is so boring :( at least to me.
I don't want to offend anyone but I think that this
forum serves to different purposes as I think.
We all should look at Pekka - his work here is extremly
helpful and really interesting for everyone here.
Prices and related rumors can be easily found in other
places but beautiful Linear Sharpen action for example
could not be found anywhere else.
Sorry if I offend someone - I did not mean to do so.
I just kind of allergic to talks about car prices,
home loans, tax reduction, sales, promotions, savings,
discounts and sport by some reason.
Life is beautiful actually (as russian poet Mayakovsky said
before he shot himself :)).

To be honest i agree with you but first of all you don't have to read all of the post, you actualy have the option of reading what you like, there is 250 people that did read this post so abviously some are interested.
Pekka i don't really know him but i have to say that because if him i am a better photograph, this guy is incredible and i know that because i did take the liberty to read "his" post and i made the choice of not reading other.
We invested a lot of money for these COMPUTERS (with lens) and i personaly am very interested in this technologie and most of all i am extrimely interested i knowing what all of the PRO'S on "THIS" website think of it as it evolve.
p.s. i am sorry for any mistake i am still learning that english stuff.
Sincerly.
Stephane. :-)

This is the point - I am pretty much sure that among
these 250 who read this post at least 245 new about
D60's price speculation (from dpreview for example).
This is tabloid effect - you see something that catch
your sight, then you read and then you realize that you
don't need to read it at all and you knew this before you
actually stared to read this.
This is standard mass-media trick - you can see it everyday.
Most of people read/watch/hear/think things that they
actually would not like to read/watch/etc.
Idea of free choice is a legend in which people believe
to please themselves.
Too many information and too many choices as bad as lack
of them.
I am telling this because most of forums on the web finally
dies because of similar problem - easy to see.
So when someone post something he should think who actually
need this post and who actually can benefit from this post
in any way - good pics, pleasure etc (so my post is bad :)).
However, may be I am wrong, but may be not.

That price is news to me. I am glad I read it here before I bought a D30. I believe this is a good topic for this kind of forum.
I could live without weeding through all of the philosophy about what should and shouldn't be posted.
I may still buy a D30 because of all of the positive information here but at least I will be a smarter shopper. I probably shouldn't pay more than half of what I can get a D60 for.
All of that fine print on sites like dpreview give me a headache.

Welcome to the politics of money. Spend lots of money to convince people to buy your product, then raise the price (more often lower the quality and production cost) to pay for convincing everyone to buy your product.
But the Forum is still free to read and agree or disagree as you like. Bless those who provide us the ability to freely disagree (i.e. Pekka).

It would be interesting (in theory - not of course
in real life) to see how many people would read post
here with title "D60 for 1600$ avaialble now from Delta
International" :) - kidding of course.
I tried yesterday different actions from LS3.12 - they
are marvelous - it is interesting to know how did Pekka
manage to use PhotoShop so effectively?

I am not knocking anyone for their grief over the D60, but hey, if its Digital you can be certain of two things....
1.) VERY SOON there will be a newer and faster one out.
2.) In general the prices for the new technology are going to get lower and lower.
Personal I am thrilled with the D30 I just got 01/02/02. Rather than worry that there is a newer and faster one out there, I think I'll just concentrate on trying to learn to use the one I have better and tip my hat to those that are going to have the newer and faster technology.
Oh eventually I am sure I will upgrade. In three or four years they will have the new D2880 (7.25 gigapixel resolution, infrared download capability, PDA compatible, and wireless internet connectivity). All for just $999 (MSRP - Delta's price may vary!)

I spoke with Canoga Camera today. They told me...
The $1999 price for the D60 is the preorder price for the "body only", due out in May.
The "D60 kit" is due out in about 3 weeks and the preorder price is $2199

HA HA HA HA WRONG! $1999.99
What about all the people who couldn't afford a D30? Now they can, and get into digital photography!! Everything has dropped in price on EVERY digital camera, why didn't you see this coming?
Your D30 is awesome, but I'll have to admit, my D60 is on order. sell your D30 on ebay, I got $1500.

I think it's common sense to know that the D60 would be cheaper. That has been the trend in digital cameras for a few years now. Look how many thousands those previous pro digicams cost!! whew. Now look at how little you spend on a decent 35mm.. whew again. Since digicams can replace the film, the prices will undoubtedly fall to that of the Rebel G for the Dxx series.
I bought my D30 cam at end of Jan knowing full well the D60 would be $1800 (ok I was wrong, it's $2000+) but I bought it anyway, because I knew I liked the D30 and there WAS a chance the D60 would be higher price of $2800-3000 (my theory was Canon may need to keep it kinda high to give justification the the D1 price). It was a risk I was willing to make. I also didn't want to loose the chance to get a camera if Canon didn't release the D60 til months later.
D60 has increased res, but I don't NEED that. I am really upset they have reduced the 1600 ISO down to 1000 too. BTW, the increased res will mean you better have a steady hand when shooting :-) I am willing to bet it will be a bit noisier too given more pixels in same space. The features on the D60 are not THAT much better than D30 to justify an upgrade even if I had the D30 for 2 years. I suspect the next in the D series (D90-D120) to be one worth looking at as they address focusing issues.
It's like Printers. You'd be crazy to upgrade for each and every new one unless your really making money with it, it's better to just hold off and wait for a significant jump as long as what your doing still holds up to acceptable standards. Of course some of us are nerds (me included) and like our toys but it's a hefty price to pay to be on the edge especially when the edge is only marginally better.
As an artist, I find I do my best work when I'm limited. By the very nature of being limited I get the most creative. In contrast, I also like the right tool for the job... so there is a balancing act. My suggestion is not to get your panties all bunched up about the D60... you already have a capable camera. If you're not pushing the limits of the camera then don't waste your money cause the camera is still out performing you... when you out perform the camera -then upgrade. The D30 is the same great camera it was when you bought it.
The real thing to look at is not your camera's capabilities... look at your photos... what are YOUR capabilities? You're an artist... make art. I think people find it easier to blame their tools for their own shortcomings "If I just had more xyz"... bah. Make art. If it sucks the odds are it's not the camera. I know this from experience. :-)
In the future, I expect digicam prices to continue to fall or more features be added at that same price point... but ultimately decent digital bodies like the D30 will be $400-500 in a 3 years and the high end cameras that are now $5000+ will be at the $1800-2200 range.

if this is any show of all of the above,
i bought my g1 for 750.00 when it came out....
a year later and now you can get them for 499.99 or even 399.99
all in all
i think it's a fair trade off....
but also..for those of you that are DBA'd or incorporated...remember that these little cameras, etc. are write offs....not to mention you get to write off their depreciation values each year for taxes....
woo hoo
