Just a guess but perhaps ƒ45 is too small of an aperture and you're getting some diffraction? What are the results around ƒ14 or even ƒ11?

Thanks for the response. What is diffraction?

Because the flower had some depth to it, I thought I needed the highest DOF possible. I will try again tomorrow at f14 or so..

Yeah, you're after that compromise between maximum depth of field and minimum diffraction. Also remember to consider the physical distance that becomes "sharp" when setting aperture. Looking at that shot I think that ƒ11 may give you a depth of field similar to what you got with the smaller aperture with less diffraction.

The other thing to consider is the length of time needed to take a shot with that aperture. That pic was taken inside with no breeze right? With macro even the tiniest of tiniest movements... blur.

ufauxreal
19th of March 2010 (Fri), 22:20
Yes, it was taken indoors. I have a wired remote which I will use tomorrow, instead of the 2 second timer. I may increase the ISO also. That was a 13 second exposure... not sure if that makes a difference or not? I'll post my results.

I've had my Sigma 105 for a while but haven't used it much. Now that spring is quickly approaching I hope to use it more. I took a closeup of a Mum, and was not really happy with the sharpness. I used AF... maybe I should try manual focus, but I figured the camera's eyesight is better than these old eyes :). Below are two images of the same thing... first is with no sharpening, second is sharpened in Photoshop.
EXIF data:

I'm new at Macro photography... any suggestions on improving my technique?

Thanks!

JB

P>S> Just thought of something else. I had the camera on a tripod and used the 2 second self-timer. I also had it on exposure bracket. I wonder if having it on bracket has any effect?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v167/beadnik/AfterTheRainSharp-1.jpg

The second seems better^^.Definately use the manual focus it's more work but it pays dividends in the long run.

I don't generally exposure bracket when doing macro work.

Never ever ever use autofous for macro. Learn to manual focus it, you will thank yourself in the future.

Good stuff! While I agree manual is usually better for macro I wouldn't use the term "never" regarding AF. Use what works for the situation.

No filters were used pre or post i think its just the shallow DOF.

Yesterday's venture into the garden trying to get some macro shots with my cheapo tubes + macro lens...not easy at all, I had to attach a torch to the lens barrel to help to see to focus. These are the best of a bad bunch:

I've found it an excellent piece of glass for portraits as well. Outdoor portraits of course, indoors it's too long. Unfortunately for those who want to see, they're of the family type, which I keep in the private collection.

Does make me want to get that 85mm though, which would be totally awesome for outdoor portraits.

Not my favorite photo but it shows the usefulness of having f/45. Without access to a ND filter being able to stop down so far was the only way to get wispy water in bright direct sunlight.

Recently had an operation and I need to take it easy for a while. I normally wouldn't take my macro out in the winter but I figured I'd give it a run out as its light weight to carry. As the threads been quiet for a few weeks I guess I'm not the only one leaving it at home.
I liked the vivacious green against the muted background in this shot. It was handheld, I couldnt carry the tripod or the monopod. When the weather clears, hopefully tomorrow, I think I'll try it again as I really enjoyed the focal length.

Yes, if it's in good shape. I've seen them used up to $400.

Hotel Garden Flowers, Tokyo Japan (http://www.flickr.com/photos/christopherbrian/6364466917/) by Christopher Brian's Photography (http://www.flickr.com/people/christopherbrian/), on Flickr

I spent about 6 months in Japan just over a decade ago. I took hundreds, if not thousands, of pictures and 5 or 6 of them turned out ok. I have a considerable amount of negatives to go through to find and properly scan the ones I like. Until then I do have some low quality scans of 5x7 prints which I hope sharing will compel me to get proper scanning done.

These flowers were in the garden of the Asakusa hotel I stayed at for about half of my time in Tokyo. The crappy scan really does not do justice to this image. It still remains one of my favourites.

I love this lens. Absolutely love it. Easy to use, great sharpness, love the f2.8, but never gone more narrow than f13. I really like using this for natural light macro, and find it a good walkabout all-purpose lens.

Do stacked shots count?
