View Full Version : Do SLR owners also own point and shoots?

I have been using my 5D for a while now, and have always been thinking of getting a small point and shoot digital camera as a little travel companion. As much as I hate being without a camera on me at all times, the 5D w/ grip and 24-105 is just way too big to carry along with me to work and so on.
So my question is, do SLR owners also have small point and shoots as well for times that taking the SLR is just unfeasible? What brand and model do you use, and are you happy with it? Most importantly (IMHO), how much control can you take over the image (shutter speed, aperture, etc.)?

I just ordered a Canon 530A from Costco for $129. It's a bargain. It's small and 5.0 mp, I think, and it is handy. It takes SD cards. My 9 year old is getting that for Christmas. Of course, Mom gets to borrow it when needed. :)

I have one but it collects dust. I get very few shots with it I am pleased with so just suck it up and drag my SLR gear with me when I want to shoot.

My husband and I each have a Rebel XT (so we don't fight over it), but also have an Olympus point and shoot for those times it would be inconvenient to carry a larger camera. It's an older model, so I can't recommend a particular model P&S based on my experience, just that having something small to slip into a pocket or purse is a nice thing to have.

I am never embarrassed to have my good gear. The 20D with grip and 24-70L is something to behold in any situation, but I don't bring that to impress. It's just a great set-up. I never run out of power and the lens is just amazing. But there are times when that equipment is too much. The little P&S fits in my pocket. :) So, I can't complain the P&S gets no use.

Still have my Sony DCS-T1. I use it every now and then for when I go out with my friends and I don't want my 30D to get nicked/broken.

Another A530 owner. Cheap, and surprisingly capable for what it is.
Also renders 'invisbility artifact' when needed. Nobody spares a tourist with a point and shoot a second glance. 300 f/4L and 1D classic tends to draw a few stares. A530 preempts questions and looks innocent enough that people are at ease with it. And it still beats the stuffing out of cell phone cameras, whether or not they have some_famous_manufacturer_lending_their_name lenses on them.

That's exactly what I want to avoid. I have become very used to the quality of the 5D with an L lens, and dont want to get a P&S that will give me poor results (though i know not to expect that level of quality out of it.. thats why I got an SLR in the first place!). I just need something that is small and can shoot good photos, something i wont be afraid to take with me when i am drunk and stumbling!
Thanks for all the responses so far.

I never go out without my little SD200 Canon in my cargo pocket and most times my Olympus C5050 in the car. Although I am loving my 5D there are just times it's too cumbersome to take. I do mostly hiking and sometimes that entails some scrambling and the 5D is just too big.

I bought my wife a Nikon Coolpix which I often stick in my pocket. You can't take a DSLR evrywhere.
I also have a Minolta Dimage 7i, which I had before my 350D. I still use the Minolta from time to time.

I have an S1 IS which is great. I use it for quick photos and for times when I don't want to carry a dSLR but need the features. When I want something compact I use a Nikon 3100. Both very ancient I know but they both work well. Actually the S1 comes in handy for recording the neighbour's dogs in our yard as court evidence.
