That depends on your usage. I, and many other casual photo-philes get by on a 512 CF. Heavy duty users will probably tell you 1g. My thought with media has been that prices are generally soft, so buy what you are comfortable with financially. I am one that would prefer 2 512's over a 1g. Nothing worse then a card going bad at the worst time.

Since $$ is an issue I recommend going to Sams Club if you're here in the USA and purchase one 256 Card for about $46.00 and try it out. Simple tech makes great cards and thats the way I got started. Once you figure what you really want to do then make your choices from there.
Card reader is a must
Don't rely on one card better to have two or more in case of an freak accident.
If you own a notebook PC then use it to quickly download & store images.
PS elements is good for general photography editing & if you decide to start shooting in RAW format then the $$$ goes up from there. Software & CF cards increases the expense.

Welcome to the club & enjoy

Overall I would say two 512mb Cards should cover you & try not to delete pics until you look @ them on a full size monitor the LCD can be decieving.

Denny,

It all depends how much you shoot and also what format/size you shoot in.

I shoot only in RAW these days and can get approx 85 images on a single 512Mb card. I have two 512Mb cards and a spare that is 256Mb. The two big cards usually last me a day at a big event.

The biggest let down when I first had the 10D was that I would often run out of "film" while in the field (only had the 256Mb card at the time). I would then have to delete those shots I didn't think were much good while in the field just so I could fit more shots on. However, I do regret that now.

Cheers

Ian

A pair of cards is allways better than one big one for a number of reasons,. but the best reason is the ability to keep shooting,.. (one downloading and one to keep you shooting while it does)

Many of us have portable storage solutions that are FAR less pricey than a pile of big expensive CF cards,. for instance a 20 or 30 gigabyte X-drive will cost roughly the same as a single 1gig CF card...

So if you start with either a pair of 256,. or a single 512 with the idea of getting a second 512 in the near future,. you will be ready to get a portable hard drive solution if the need comes up. This is the most cost effective way to handle a lot of photos!
