I have a carpet cleaning service cleaning my house right now. I asked the owner if he needed any photos taken for marketing purposes and he said yes.

Now the hard part.

1. He asked me how much do i charge and told him that we could negotiate that before i start. I dont know what to charge him
2. Once you take the pictures what do i do with them? How do i get brochures made? Is there an online service that does that? Or is that his responsibilities to do once i get him the photos?
3. I want to take some photos while they are working and print them out on my i9900 just to give him an example. Looking for recommendations on kinds of shots i can take.

Equipment i have is Rebel XT, Nifty fifty, and kit lens. Also have Tamron 200-500 but cant think of a use for that. and 580EX flash.

Thanks

OK - you may have bitten off a lil more then you can chew, we'll try to help out.

1) you can't create a set list of prices w/out knowing what they need the images for
2) did you discuss brochurs or is your job only to take the photos? check your local shops, both camera stores and kinko's about getting trifold cards made, they usually offer at least 2 different types of folds for the tri-fold type brochures and usually more then one type of paper. furthermore, are you doing the design for the brochures? that costs money too. online usually only works if you don't have a set deadline and don't mind paying through the nose for shipping. paper is heavy.
3) don't print at home. it costs 30c or less to do it locally or online - use a quality local lab, not walmart. its cheaper then your home printer and the colors will be more accurate and overall, a more professional looking product.

your going to need a wide angle, look to your local camera shop to rent or one of the online sources like rentcameragear.com or ziplens.com to get a 10-22.

use a tripod for as much as you can possibly use, your going to have lower then ideal light and your better off shooting longer shutter speeds w/ lower iso's then hand held @ 800iso.

DO A CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE!

Your absolutely right i bit off more than i can chew. I just didnt really expect the guy to say yes that fast. I did show him some of my photos that i dont really think are that great and he thought they were awesome. So then he starts asking me when we can get together to take some photos. He got more excited after seeing some of my photos that i thought were worthless. He wants me to take photos of his warehouse, equipment, and his workers working as well as some before and after carpet shots. I suggested that his workers be in clean, pressed uniforms and fresh hair cuts when we do the job. He said he worked for many big companies that he would send my way if they needed a photographer. Oh and he only needs the photos so that they can go on his website. So that makes life a little easier i think.
I would like to be able to offer a service like brochures also but dont know anything about that other than what you suggested.
Thanks for any more advice you have.

stuff like this with owner operators is usualy done by barter in my area.
Have him do your rugs for free every 2 months for a year.

Hey, you have to start somewhere and this seems as good a place as any...

Charge what your time is worth and your quality will result. It also sounds like he is only expecting images at this point. If he is wanting graphic design and this is not your prefession, I'd simply stick to the photography only. Provide him with digital files on CD/DVD data. (tifs) He can take them to whom he'd like for the layout work. You'll want to use the widest angle (probably your kit lens) you can get.

Good luck!
