Never put the highest quality pics on the net. If it's something worth stealing then keep sizes to 640x400 or so and JPEG compress them at 50% so you can still see it's a decent pic, but for printing purposes especially, they're mush.
And remember even if you shut down the right-click save-as, or flash a slideshow, or java code your pics, if the user can see them on his screen, he can steal them. And there may be other ways to hack photos off a site.

is there a way to shut down the right-click save as feature?
with your advice on image size as well as shutting it down, that would stop 90% of the folks out there. that would make me feel somewhat better, dont you agree?

It's a quiet simple code you can insert into the HTML but that doesnt stop them from doing a print screen, put a watermark of some sort on the picture and as stated, make sure it's of a low quality.
It looks like this, i'm sure there are other variations:
<!--Start of no right click code-->
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!--
// No rightclick script.
// Find more great scripts and applets at the JavaFile!
// http://www.javafile.com
// Do not delete this header!
var message="Right click disabled!"; // Put your message for the alert box between the quotes.
// Don't edit below!
function click(e) {
if (document.all) {
if (event.button == 2) {
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
if (document.layers) {
if (e.which == 3) {
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
}
if (document.layers) {
document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
}
document.onmousedown=click;
//-->
</SCRIPT>
<!--End of no right click script -->

My feeling is,. if you don't want to let people save your images to there PCs,. then don't post them where they can do it???
I don't quite understand what the fear is? IS it that they will try and pass them off as there own?
Even if you stamp your name on them,. if it was somehow in someones interest to re-use them,. the could take the name stamp off.

Will do Phil! :)
Just a little food for thought,.
How mad are you at the RIAA???
The continued corporate greed to control "intlectual property",.. does this piss you off?
Well,. I assume too much,. but it sure pisses me off,. and there fore my images are there for the world to enjoy.
There is an image in my gallery that has been viewed nealry 2,000 times!
I KNOW it resides on the hard drives of a significant number of those viewers... and to tell the truth, I am thrilled that it is! I want people to enjoy my artwork. :wink:

Post your stuff in low resolution. Don't go over 500 pixels in any directions on size. Compress JPGs 8-10%. Don't worry if someone steals your stuff. They will do it, it is almost a given.

What is wrong with sharing?

There is no secure way to protect photos on the Internet, disabling the right-click will not stop people who want to save your photos, so you might as well save yourself the trouble trying.
As many people have already mentioned, the only way is to post pictures not larger than for example 640 x 480 - at that size, you can't print them very large and with high quality.
But it can happen - my mother had some holiday pictures on the Internet, and suddenly she saw one of her photos in a vacation guide!! She contacted the travel agency and they apologized, promised to put her name under the photo in the next print, and she received a small check (worth about $25) for it.

I somehow feel the ultimate compliment would be if someone stole your picture and made money from it...
...then you bring in the lawyers! :D

There is this e-mail that goes around,. a little more often than annually,.
that attaches photos that someone somewhere has decided are "The Best Photos of 200X"
Well this years batch contained a photo (among others) of a Surfer in a translucent blue green wav,. beneath the surface of which there was very clearly a very LARGE shark about 3 feet from the surfer....
Well the photographer responsible for this Gem is none other than Kurt Jones who is a regular poster and highly respected sports surf photographer (and Canon user!) on the Fred Miranda forums. (he has since made the image his Avatar! :) )
Wouldn't you know it,. he was one of the possibly millions,. definately hundreds of thousands who has received this image in there inbox!
I have not heard him complaining about theft. :mrgreen:

Was it a shark ? I heard it was a porpoise. Just looked shark like due to the refraction due to the curvature of the wave.
Anyway, never mind that. It was one of my favorite images of the year. Resided as desktop wallpaper for at least 2 months, which is my way of showing my appreciation of a very good image. :)
Cheers

There's too much else in the world to worry about. My own mortality, war in Iraq, and so much more. Who needs to worry about some deadbeat stealing pictures?
