Here are the Top 13 posters on the entire forum sorted by # of posts, just for kicks (top 13 just cause I needed to get bob gross in there).
I wonder what it would be to dig up our first posts... Would that be like looking at a photo of yourself in high school or college ~ a nice big 'fro or Duran Duran fashions??? :) Mine's pretty boring (something about Hi, Got my 10D two months ago. Love the camera. Taken thousands of shots already. First time posting to this forum bla bla bla bla...), but if anyone wants to post their best of the worst of their first few posts, please do...

Hmmm... Maybe I would make the list too if I didn't spend most of my time over on dpreview instead, not that that's anything to boast about. :D :p
Big 'fro? Duran Duran? I guess you're giving your age away w/ that one. :D

 not a 'fro but Duran Duran in high school for sure. And Flock of Seagulls (sans hairdo), A-ha, Bananarama, jeez I'm getting a flashback. Hey, I can make you honorary member of the list if you like so long as you get off dpreview and come hang here instead 8)

O-kay,. this was my first post as far as the search engine is concerned...
The question was,. "what possible reason is there to use an embeded jpeg in a raw file?"
Got my 10D last night (psyched!) so this is all new to me. I am a long time Digital photograph lover though, (Olympus C2100 Ultra Zoom most recently) and have now graduated to the "Real Thing" with the 10D.
One reason I can think for the embedded jpegs is if you are like me,. and have VERY LITTLE experience with Film Photography,. or have made the switch to Digital to the same extreme as a digital only user,..
... then you have absolutely no inhibitions of shoting the same subject 2 dozen times at different exposures, ISOs, angles etc. Film is Free!!!!!
That said,. you may not want to keep your hard drive stuffed with thousands of 8 Megabyte RAW images.
Look at the Jpegs,. and dump the bad pics. Then use the RAW image for the "Keepers" to get a better print/file to tweek. And yet save more of the Jpegs as a log of how you got to the "keeper" with experimentation.
As a complete newbie though,. I will admit I haven't even shot any RAW images yet,.... YET. But this is one reason I can imagine the embedded jpeg may be usefull

Leave it to Ilya to come up with another provocative thread. Two things strike me right away: (1) I am apparently a blabber mouth, and (2) there are a lot of folks who are very active in this forum that I haven’t heard of.
Looking back at my first post, I was bemoaning the fact that my credit card was feeling the strain of recent lens purchases. I’ve made very little progress in 6 months --- overspending and under-achieving. These appear to be the hallmarks of my relationship with photography thus far. I also marvel at how quickly I felt qualified to jump into the fray with authoritative answers on just about every subject.
If anything has changed for me since I first poked my nose into these discussions, it’s my ascendance to the 2nd level of competence. See http://www.zanthan.com/japan/archives/001004.html
I now recognize just how little I understand about photography generally, and digital photography specifically. Whether or not I will ever make it to the third level of competence is a matter purely for conjecture; only time will tell. The fourth and fifth levels are almost certainly unattainable in the time I have left during which my brain will still be facile enough to absorb new knowledge.
As compared to people like CyberDyneSystems and RFMSports who usually are helpful and constructive in their contributions, I find my own postings largely inane and irrelevant. Still, I’m having fun, and enough other members have engaged in a give-and-take of my silliness to offer at least a modicum of encouragement for future such offerings, albeit on a much more limited scale.. As a practical matter, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find time to monitor the board with the frequency I have in the past. Hopefully this will be good news for those who find my postings to be mainly a waste of bandwidth.
Anyway, this is an intriguing discussion, and it will be interesting to see how others look back on their own involvement in the board and how they see it changing/evolving in the future.
I did notice that my average postings per day were a little over five. If I don’t put in another word for 2 ½ years, my average will still be around one per day, which would still leave me well ahead of most forum members. Maybe I should pull in my horns just a little and give someone else a chance. Or maybe not.

I am going to inject a little controversy into this top 10 love fest…. Get ready to duck Neil.
I have always believed that photography was about .. well images not kit. I mean could any of us match the works of Irving Penn, Brassai, Imogen Cunningham, Ansel Adams (the list is long so I will stop here) with the thousands of pounds/dollars worth of DSLR L glass, computing power and software that we have at our disposal, just a guess, but I think not.
My point is that whilst I really enjoy reading all the posts, and certainly some of you in the top ten can be very entertaining, with a few noticeable exceptions you don’t share many pictures, or even link to a website for that matter.
Now call me old fashioned but I would much rather take advice from someone who’s work I have seen, than someone for whom I have no idea how competent they are.
I did say “with a few noticeable exceptions” so I am safe there, but for the others, please share a few more pics.
Told you it was a bit controversial, but we cant have things too cosy round here can we.

Those that can, do.
Those that can't, teach.
Those that can't teach, post endlessly on bulletin boards.
If it's any consolation to you, Neil, I even annoy myself at times.
I do promise to start posting serious pictures in the near future.

Tom, if your pictures of those colorful 10Ds you posted a while back aren't "serious pictures", then I don't know what is? :D

Now, now Neil. I've had the pleasure of seeing almost everyone's work on that list, and its impressive. Yes, even Tom has slipped and posted a train shot sometime ago. And it was good (he'll tell you it was an accident though). You have to understand, with Tom's self-deprecating sense of humor, he's probably his own worst critic. But we all do hope to see more in the future. And Neil, save the "kit doesn't matter" for the Philosophy thread!

I think Tom is suffereing from a similar "Photographers BlocK" that I am struggling with.
Around here we call it "inclimate weather" !
Right now I am at my desk at work, it is pitch black outside and -3 degrees. There are no birds for me to find.. (except my stallwart buddie the Freya and Odin,. my pair of Red tails,. but Iam having bad luck with then too....
I knpw there are those who can produce under such circumstances,. but I am haveing a very hard time finding anything I have shot being worth keeping,. let alone posting :)

1. If I had some image that I needed to use to illustrate the point that I was trying to make, then I might post an image. I tend not to throw random uncollected images onto my web space.
2. My personal web site has been on the air since 1996, so lots of low-res photos can be seen there. Most of those are wilderness travel-related and probably not of great interest to real photographers. Most are "I was there" images.
3. Commercial web work was done in 1996-1998. That was a fun endeavor at the time, but I no longer work for that employer, so I'm not about to point anybody to that space.
4. I've never taken a photo of a piece of camera equipment, so I have nothing like that to show. One of these days, I will have to shoot an image of the lens trailer, but I would have to use a wide angle lens for that.
5. More recent work is along the lines of weddings, and I do not have any permission from the subjects/clients for publishing those. Nor would those prove anything.
Any more questions?

Since we're picking on bob, i'd like to post his 2nd ever post to this forum in Nov 2002 (his first one was not very interesting). This was in response to someone asking what folks thought about the D60. Bob Gross is truly timeless:
I've had my D60 for six weeks or so.
(1) It is not lightweight.
(2) I assumed that it would fit into a camera holster that my film camera fitted. Not so.
(3) Make sure you have a fairly serious computer to post-process the images.
Suggestions:
(1) Read the manual, cover to cover.
(2) Try the camera out with the manual open.
(3) Go re-read the manual.
(4) Purchase plenty of CF cards.
It is not trivial. It is not the same as film photography.

It is impossible for me to update my equipment list in a signature line.
First, I have no signature line.
Second, I have no equipment list. I know what I've got, and it doesn't seem very important to me to advertise it.
Further, I have no steekin' Apple computer.

My first post turned out to be a plug for BreezeBrowser, so here's my last post (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=23006&highlight) (second last as soon as I press submit), which, as serendipity would have it, is a plug for a new project of mine.
Could resist a marketing opportunity like this. :)

Well, sounds like you really want us to know now. :D Since "not a 'fro", then I guess you're not ahead of me afterall ;) although I have no idea who's Flock of Seagulls. For someone who grew up (sort of) during the 80's, I'm sorely lacking in the 80's experience -- was more like a bystander than anything else -- but from what I hear, I didn't really miss much. ;)
Hey, I can make you honorary member of the list if you like so long as you get off dpreview and come hang here instead 8)
LoL. No thanks. Wouldn't want *more* people to know that I'm obsessed about it afterall. :D I'll let the others have all the fun instead. I may spend more time here if I end up getting a 300D (or the like), but I'm not sure just yet. Besides, you guys/gals do excellently w/ the banter w/out me anyway. If I become a regular here, people might start complaining about the excess "noise" again and lead to more forum reorgs/splits that no-one really wants. :D
