I was recently able to finally purchase my Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM lens and discovered my current bag wasn't quite big enough to carry it attached to my 20D, along with my EF 50mm f/1.8 lens, EF-S 17-55mm IS USM lens, and 580ex flash. So my quest for a new bag began.
Of all the bags I looked at, I liked the thin yet tall layout of the National Geographic bag the most. I really like the color and styling of the bag as well. It has that relaxed look to it. It's made from a cotton / hemp blend of fabric.
Here’s a quick background on hemp.
Hemp is touted as nature’s strongest fiber. Commercial Hemp growing is banned in the United States, as it is in the same family as Marijuana. However smoking hemp flowers will only give you a headache, not a high.
The bag is slightly floppy, with most of its structure coming from the contents themselves.
Even with the floppy nature of the bag, the padding is still very nice. It's easily on par with my Tamrac System 6's padding; even better in some places. The bag measures roughly 13” wide x 11 3/4” tall x 7” deep. (The floppy nature makes it difficult to measure)
On the outside of the bag you have a nice strong handle sewn in to the top. There is a large flap that comes over the top and secures via some brass buckles. I was a little leery about the security of these buckles staying in place when lifting the bag via the handle so I did a little testing. I loaded it up with some heavy items that wouldn’t get hurt if they fell then picked it up from the handle and ‘bounced’ it around a bunch (and I do mean a BUNCH) and the buckles never gave. My confidence in them is now high.
On the back of the bag there is a zippered pocket for storing papers / folders and things. I don’t think you’d be able to fit too thick item back here comfortably though.
Starting on the side and running along the bottom of the bag to the other side is a strap identical to the one used for the shoulder strap. This strap has some loose areas that you can use to attach other bags or items. They don’t provide any straps for this usage though, so you’ll need to provide your own. The strap is only usable on the sides though, as on the bottom it runs through the bag as support.
On the outside of the flap you have two pockets that are closed with Velcro. They’re about 6.5” x 6.5” and are pretty expandable. There are also two brass D rings for attaching extra bags / equipment.
Inside the flap is a cover which can be zipped closed to secure the contents of the bag, or rolled up and secured out of the way with a Velcro tab to provide for quick access to the contents.
With the flap out of the way, it reveals two zippered pockets measuring about 8.5” x 7”. Inside the pocket on the left are some small pockets for storing memory cards or other similarly sized items. The right pocket has some pen holder sized slots (one of them is large enough to hold my bottle of lens cleaning solution. Both of these pockets are pretty roomy.
The bag is basically one big open area, with a small pocket on the back wall that can hold a small laptop (my 15.4" won't even come close to fitting in here) or notepads. I store my camera / flash / other manuals there. That pocket measures about 12” wide, 10” tall and about 1” wide at the sides.
The bottom of the bag also has an added padded 'flap' that is hinged and can be rotated up and back to Velcro against the back wall and increase volume. This flap is about 1/2" thick.
The bag comes with an insert that has Velcro on the bottom and the back. The inside back wall and bottom inside flap of the bag have Velcro that you use to attach the insert and keep it in place.
The insert has two dividers that can be positioned via Velcro to hold the camera & lens combo by the camera body, with the lens hanging down. This works great on my 17-55, but the 70-200 is longer than these dividers, so the camera / lens combo sits on the lens cap itself which is sitting on the bottom of the insert. The insert has about 1/4" of padding on all sides. Add this to the flap on the bottom inside of the bag, and you have 3/4" of padding between the lens and the outside world where it sits. The insert has a flap on it which covers the rear of your camera and secures shut with Velcro. However when the 70-200 lens is mounted on the camera, the flap is not long enough to reach over the combo to the Velcro on the other side, so I just tuck the flap down inside the insert and out of the way.
Currently I have it loaded out so that the 70-200 fits on the left side, the camera with EF-S 17-55mm lens attached in the insert in the middle, and my 580ex on the other side of that. My 50mm is also in the insert on the side pocket created by one of the dividers. You can use the canon lens & speedlite cases if you want a little more added protection.
The one draw back I just recently discovered is that when I have the BG-E2 grip mounted on the 20D, the camera is now ‘taller’ than the insert, so it won’t fit completely inside. It ends up with the lens being in the insert, and the camera sort of hanging from a combination of the insert dividers, and the insert wall itself. Still plenty of padding, and I don’t think any undue pressure is being placed on any parts of the camera. The wall sits at the joint of the camera and the grip.
I’ve carried the bag around a couple of full days at Sea World so far and I’m very pleased with it. It’s very convenient to be able to just lift the flap out of the way and grab the camera when needed. I tend to carry it directly on my side with my arm laying over it as a security measure and I find that the soft cotton / hemp material almost forms to my side a small amount. I’ve found the strap to be very comfortable and to have sufficient ‘cling factor’. In other words, it stays on my arm. However, because of the nature of the bag to form to your side / back it can get a bit warm on you if it’s hot out.
The last time I was at Sea World I actually got caught in a down pour. I noticed the clouds moving in rather quick and started walking out to my car, but I and the bag was still exposed to about 10 minutes of a solid heavy rain. When I made it to my car I checked the bag out to see how it held up and if it managed to keep the water out. Keep in mind this bag is not advertised for all weather use. I was actually very surprised. The outside of the bag was definitely wet. The cotton/hemp material sucked up the water a lot. But underneath the flap, it was completely dry. All my equipment was safe and sound. I on the other hand, was soaked to the bone and still had a 30 minute drive home in front of me. What fun!
In conclusion, I’m very happy with this bag. I find it provides a nice freedom of placement of your equipment while still providing plenty of padding. The brass buckles that hold the flap closed are secure, yet quick to release in order to get in at your equipment. A lot of people don’t like bags that look like they have expensive equipment in it, and I don’t believe this one does. Unfortunately I only have my 20D, so wasn't able to get pictures with the camera in the bag. I'll try to get my friend to bring his camera to work and get some pics of the 20d in the bag later on.
There’s a nice little side effect of having this bag, I’ve been asked twice now if I work for national geographic. :)

Hello SpiltPickle and thanks for the great review.. I had one quick question and I wanted to know if by any chance you think I maybe could fit a 30D, 70-200 2.8L, 24-70 f2.8L, EFS 10-22, a 580EX and maybe a 50 1.4 when I buy it.
I was thinking of laying everything out just like you have, placing the 10-22 and 50 1.4 in the same section just one ontop of the other. (with padding of course) I seen this pack the other day while searching and Im just stuck on getting it.. So if you can please let me know I would appreciate it..
I currently have a Dakine Sequence pack but Im just starting to dislike having to take the pack off to get something.. At first I thought the shoulder pack wasn't the way to go but for easy access this might be my solution.
Thanks once again..

I don't believe there is enough room for the 50 and the 10-22 to fit in that pocket along with the camera going in over them... I'll have to double check this when I get home and can look at the bag with a tape measurer :)
My only problem with it right now is finding out where to stuff my 105mm sigma macro... and I'm heavily eyeing the 10-22 as well... Might force me to more selectively choose which lenses to carry :)

I looked at this bag and as much as I really liked it I just saw too much compromise and did not suit my needs. It seems to have its limitations but it is a really rally nice shoulder bag. I think if my kit was going to be small it would be great but did not seem to allow room to grow and forced you to make decisions I normally would not want to make.

Ok I think your saying I can atleast fit a 70-200 f2.8L, 10-22 f3.5, 24-70 f2.8L and a 580EX?? I just might not be able to fit the 10-22 and 50 stacked when placing the body on top of them?? So If I can atleast fit the 3 lens, flash and body IM BUYING it.. as of right know Im not really looking to add the my little but swell set up.. this will aslo keep my traveling light and keep my spending to a minimum .. AS I said previously I dont have the 50 yet and with the 24-70 f2.8L I just might not need that one extra lens just yet..

I'm pretty sure you can fit it in there demo. How big is the lens, I can measure.
I love the bag more and more. Just for the heck of it I loaded up all my gear in my tamrac system 6 today to carry around and compare, and I definitely like the NG back more. Comfier, and roomier (in a different way).

Thanks for this comprehensive review of the NG bag, it sounds & looks great. I chose the Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home which is a similar style bag and also functions well, but based on your review it looks like I should have thought about the NG bag!

OK I just Looked at the hood on the 24-70 f2.8L and it's almost the EXACT SAME size as the 70-200 f2.8L HOOD.. The 24-70 hood (EW-83F) is smaller by very little and shorter by maybe 1/2". So if it fits where you place your 17-55 then it will work.. CROSSING FINGERS?? also the 10-22 with out hood is (H)3 1/2" (90mm) x (W) 3.3" (83.5mm)
Thanks

oo boy. I don't think you'd be able to fit the 10-22 in the same spot I have my 50 in. The only place my 17-55 fits is attached to the camera, to the side of the 50mm..

The NG looks very nice...I spent the day yesterday looking at posts and bags on the internet...I finally ordered a bag...but it wasn't the NG as much as I liked it!
I ordered a Domke 2X...and hope I will be as happy with it as I would have been with this one!
Please let me know what you think of this one DEMO and I will let you know what I think of the Domke !
Anyone have any thoughts on the NG over the Domke? I hope I made the right choice!

A nice new camera bag. The methadone for those of us with L-itis.
Sure we all NEED to buy another $1000+ lens. Spending $100 on a really nice bag though can take the edge off, get us through a few more pay checks. Then it kicks in again, we find ourselves googling for reviews of a lens we already know everything about. Posting for advice despite having already made our mind up. Getting ready to figure out how to sneak a 100-400 L past the significant other. Then some pusher comes along "Hey buddy, I know where I can find you a 7-mill home, but check out this National Geo beaut". At least its less expensive than a lens.
At least that is I think why I have more camera bags than lenses. :)
So, who thinks I should get a 135L??

Great review.
At the recent PhotoPlusExpo in New York City (think Photokina) NG had a very large display with all their bags, and they were for sale also.
I looked at one in particular, only one left, had no tags on it. It seemed like a long lens bag. The "saleslady" said she thought it was a tripod bag.
Personally, I prefer the all weather covers that come with the lowepro and other bags, but they are very nice nonetheless.

Depends on 'fit'.
If you do not use the internal organizer for the camera, yes it will fit. I've started doing this and carrying my 20d with 70-200 2.8 is on it in the bag. I use the internal divider it comes with to hold my 17-55 and 105mm sigma. Throwing the 580ex in one of the front pockets (under the flap)
If you were to use the internal divider to hold the camera, the protective flap on the divider wouldnt' be able to close over the back of the camera, but no big loss as the main flap of the bag still fits fine over the top.

Got one of these bags for Christmas. I certainly like it and it'll get a lot of use. However there is one concern I have that I wanted to bring up.
The actual bag itself isn't fully padded. It comes with a padded insert thingy which works fine but only represents about half the interior volume. The bottom is padded. The back is padded, the front has all the lid and pockets and such that do a good enough job. That makes the weak spot the ends of the bag. You can position the insert down one end but that still leaves you with an unpadded end. The two extra dividers that come with it are designed for use inside the insert. They are not designed to securely attach outside it so do a pretty crappy job as an alternate bit of end padding.
So, good bag. Looks nice, decent amount of space, well made. However, I'm just concerned that were it to suffer an impact to one end, the only thing between the object and the bag contents will be two thin layers of cloth.
Have any of the other bag owners come up with a decent solution?

The bag is not actually "weather proof". I have noticed it can keep your equipment mostly dry as you run to the car in a heavy downpour, and it can withstand a little mist. Has anybody actually tried canvas waterproofing-spray on it? If so how did it go? I'm mostly concerned about discoloration or damage to the material.
As far as padding is concerned you could always use a small synthetic blanket or stich your own padding to the inside. I suppose It comes down to being careful and lucky as far as avoiding serious impact.

It does look like padding in the photo, but there isn't any. All you are seeing is that the inside liner isn't attached to the outside material so there are creases. Pity, as a little padding in the ends would be a huge improvement to an already decent bag.
And yeah, none of the padding in this bag is as thick as a LowePro, and miles behind a Crumpler. Thing is, for the most part at least, it has enough. The thinner padding also makes for a smaller bag. I mean I like my crumpler and all, but the thing is 50% padding.
lmitch6
6th of January 2007 (Sat), 23:12
And the other side of 'more padding' is 'more rigidity'. What makes the NG bags (and Domke bags) is their 'floppiness'. They tend to wrap around the waist, which makes for much more comfortable carrying - at least to me.

I guess the thing to do then, is get some closed-cell foam padding and make a couple of pads for the ends.

What I've done is moved the little insert pouch thing down one end, and then got a divider from one of my LowePro bags at the other end. The limited padding really isn't a huge deal, I just wanted to make sure anyone considering this bag is aware that as it ships there is no padding at either end. I still think its a great bag. :)

Glad you've got the bag figured out. So strange that the padding is different from the small bag.
I'm going to do a review of the small bag in a day or two. Like you, I really like the bag, but is has a couple of peculiarities I'd like to address.

I suppose It comes down to being careful and lucky as far as avoiding serious impact.

i just sprayed on a water protector that i use for my shoes...no bad effects but i dont have time spilling some water in it. though i was once caught under a heavy downpour. it was dry inside.

my 24-70 on my 20d with grip, you wont be able to close the flap of the padded area. but there is still another soft flap and the main flap to cover it so it doesnt matter.

From the above quoted review: "The strap, all of two inches wide looks very sturdy. Unfortunately, the material of the clip that lets you adjust its length was extremely flimsy - at least in my bag. A few hours after I had loaded the bag and was carrying it on my shoulder, the clip broke and the bag crashed down."
I have the small shoulder bag with, I would guess, the same adjustment buckle which appears to be solid brass. I'm surprised that this would fail. Maybe it was a flaw in the metal. As far as the lack of padding on the outer ends, which is different than the small shoulder bag, this has been addressed in a earlier post if someone is interested in how the owner responded to it. I will probably add this to my bag inventory and will utilize some Domke inserts to provide adequate protection.

Mine has no clip like the one in the photo. The strap is connected to the bag with a square brass hoop that looks welded shut. Seems very sturdy. My only fault with the bag is the shoulder pad slips off my shoulder sometimes. It could use a bit of split leather sewn on it to give it some tooth.

Same here. I have the medium bag and it also has brass loops rather than the pictured clip. I should imagine the differences are that the brass loops are stronger but make the strap permanently attached, whereas with the clips you could remove it.
I wonder if the clips are an 'upgrade' to it?
Never used the laptop pocket. Think I'll go check and see if my laptop fits.
Citizensmith

And the result (for a Compaq NC8430 - 15.4" widescreen) is that it won't fit. It will fit in standing up and still let you close the bag but that is really far from ideal and doesn't completely protect everything. It wasn't far off fitting so at a guess a 14" standard screen or 12" widescreen would have no trouble. A 14" widescreen though may well have trouble.
To be honest I never planned on using it as a laptop/camera bag. What I wanted was a nice looking shoulder bag that gave me easy access to my lenses. For me, I'm very happy with it. Anyone wanting a combo bag though should probably be aware it wont fit a large laptop.

I'm confused. The reviewer on Amazon said : "The strap, all of two inches wide looks very sturdy. A few hours after I had loaded the bag and was carrying it on my shoulder, the clip broke and the bag crashed down."
I was assuming that the "clip" being referred to was "B" the attached image, because it has the length adjustment. But it sounds like Citizensmith and Quad are referring to the lobster claw strap fastener "A".
Are you two saying that your bags do not have the lobster claws, and instead just a d-ring with a stationary strap sewn on, like a Domke satchel?
I've never seen a photo of the bag without the claw connector.
The one thing I don't like about my Domke is the permanent strap.

Same here, no claw clip on mine just a ring (rectangular rather than a D ring). The strap is permanently attached.
I was assuming the other poster meant the clip A rather than B because B would not be under direct load the same way as A. Looks like I was just misreading the post.
My bag generally holds a 300D, 17-40, 70-200, 85 or 24, flash and spare stuff. Never had any concerns about strap strength.

Thank you, Citizensmith, that clears up that question. Wonder why the change? Like I said earlier, I have never seen the permanent strap in any photos of the bag. I'd be a little upset if the product photo didn't match the product I received.
The claws on my small bag appear to be very sturdy. But, if the claws were giving them problems they could have gone to a Mil-spec grade, like Domke uses on it's flaps.
I'm still wondering which connector failed for the Amazon reviewer.

There is a padded pouch in the bag which has a divider. The pouch is large enough for my 17-40 and 70-200 with hoods. Then my camera, with whatever lens attached, sits outside the pouch in the main body of the bag.

Actually, seeing as it is sitting right next to me, here is a photo. The folded back thing on the left is the lid to the pouch which has a small Velcro closure. There are two lids to the main bag, a zip closing one and a flap with a couple of poppers to close it. If you are in and out of the bag all the time there is a little strap so you can roll up the zipping lid and keep it out the way. Very useful when you are working and changing lenses a lot.

Looks like more evidence got presented, but I wasn't guessing. I own a 70-200 f/4 and it regularly sits in this bag exactly as was posted in the photos by Coorz. It fits really well. The 70-200 (off the camera) also easily fits in the lens pouch. I can actually get the 70-200 and a 17-40 both with hoods in the pouch. Plenty of room in this bag.
It's worth bringing up again, the reason there is plenty of room in such a decent size bag is because of thinner padding. And that goes down to no padding at the ends, you need to move the dividers to have padding there. So yes its a great bag, yes I'm happy with it, but no it won't protect as well as a LowePro or particularly the massive padding on Crumpler bags.

Just checked out some F-3X reviews. While I was OK with the thinner padding of the NG bag, I'm not sure I'd be happy with the no padding aside from the base design of the F-3X.
Having said that, of the two lenses I've damaged one was in a nicely padded LowePro bag that got dropped from waste height. Being careful with your kit is probably as important as having good padding.

I've been carrying gear in Domkes since the beginning, when the inserts were canvas too with no damage to gear. If you drop it, it'll break and reasonable padding won't protect it. The stuff in the outside pockets provides plenty of protection on a Domke.

Cool. Its slightly bigger than I initially imagined...
NG must have used a taller than usual model for their photo- making the bag seem smaller...

Wondering if this would be a good replacement for my 7MDH when I get my 13" Macbook. I just don't know if this can store everything the 7MDH can.

There's no way to get a 13" laptop into the 7 MDH? Won't it fit in there somehow?

A semi-local shop here in Canada is selling this for $89 CDN(!!), there isn't more than one version of the medium shoulder bag is there? I even called to double check that it was in fact the medium. Sounds like a pretty good deal if it is, might tempt me to get this rather than the 7MDH.

There is a small version of the bag, and there is a backpack. However with the mediums, the only difference seems to be whether or not you can remove the shoulder strap. That does sound like a good price, if its definitely the right bag I'd get one quick.

Is there a different model number between the one with the removable strap and the one without?
Thanks,

No clue, sorry. I only realized there was two types when someone complained their D-ring broke and I thought weird, mine doesn't have a D-ring.

Actually, if you go to their site you'll see they have a "midi" version, which is the same as the medium, just without the top handle.
see?

Actually from looking at the word files they have the midi is also a fair bit smaller. Twitch, you may want to check that the $89 bag is really the medium and not the midi.
And what the hell is up with those names. Small, midi, and medium? How about Small, medium and large. Something a little less annoying. Sure, its not as annoying as the pretentious crap Starbucks use for names but its still a bit dumb.

I love that advertisement photo, something about it has national geographic written all over it. Perhaps its the pants and shoes the guy is wearing.

I had my brother pick it up for me and he said the model number matched the NG-2475 that's in the picture on the second page of this thread so I should be good. He put it on the bus (we're old fashioned here in Saskatchewan) so I should have it later tonight then we'll see for sure.

Edit: Just got the bag and it def. was the right one and I'm very please with it so far. If anyone is in Canada and has a Don's Photo store near by that's where I found this bag for $89.95 CDN.

what's the max size laptop that WILL fit in this bag?
and do any retail camera supply stores carry it, so I can check it out in person?
I'm going to be in Africa for almost a month this summer, and I need a bag to hold by digital gear in one place. Since I only have a higher-end P&S camera, the only size issue relates to fitting my laptop in it (not a bunch of lenses or lots of extra photo gear).

I have a 17" wide screen that won't fit. If you get into the 15" or 14" widescreen area it may well fit but I don't have one to compare. It may come down to how fat the laptop is. A 12" or 13" should fit no problem.
No clue who carries it. Mine came from Amazon.

Help please - I am confused over sizes of the bag.
I have a pdf documen from NG which states the size is 42x20x30cm externally while the NG website (http://www.supporthexperience.com/) referred to in an earlier post, states that it is 33x18x28cm externally.
Which is it please? Can someone measure theirs?
With regard to the midi version - it is quite a bit smaller (24x16x19cm externally). Anyone got one of these and can measure it, please?
Would prefer to get the midi (not that anyone in the UK seems to stock them) but need to make sure that a Canon 5D with 24-105L f4 IS or 24-70L f2.8 attached will fit along with a 70-200L 2.8 IS and a 580EX. I also want the camera to run along the length of the bag, not across the width.
Any one help out with pictures of the midi (no need to repost the earlier images of the medium bag - thanks to those that have).
If it was 33cm long, I'd buy one tomorrow as it would be almost perfect. The extra 9cm makes me hesitate as I'd be likely to fill it with extra kit that I don't really need.
Can the instert be put anywhere in the bag, or does it have to be placed centrally?

I'll try and remember to measure my bag tonight if nobody beats me to it. As to the insert, it can be placed anywhere and is secured by velcro. I have mine down one end with the camera down the other end.

I have the small, NG-2343, that I use for my everyday bag with a 20D and 24-105, but wish it was a little larger. I hadn't seen the Midi offering before. It must be new. I see B&H doesn't have it yet. The size looks great. I'm going to order one right away from Adorama.

i looove my bag. i carry my 70-200 on one side. my 30d with usually 30 1.4 or 10-20 attached. then i stack my 30 1.4 or whatever isnt on my camera under my 105 macro.
i can fit my 12inch laptop in also but it def adds a little weight.
the front pocket carries mt 580ex easily and i have my cleaning kit in the other lens next to it.
the flap pocketse carry my extra batteries and my charger so im always good to go.
it doesnt look like a camera bag just a huge msgr bag with the NG branding.

Unfortunately, no one has posted the actual sizes of the Medium Shoulder Bag and I have taken delivery of mine today.
The ACTUAL external size is not as stated on the NG (or shop) website or in any review that I have seen. It is 34x20x29 (LengthxDepthxHeight) cm. If you are thinking of ordering one, beware of the size discrepancy.
Intenally it is approx. 33x11x26cm (The big difference in depth is due to the fact that I have not included the laptop compartment in my internal measurements).
Mine is going back - not because I don't like it, but because it does not fit the kit that i had intended it to.

So all the dimensions posted on B&H, Adorama, and the other vendors for this bag are in error. (External dimensions posted as : "16.5 x 7.8 x 11.8") That's 2.5" difference in length, a big discrepancy. Bogen/Manfrotto has had a problem with the images mismatched to the bags since the introduction.
I wonder if they changed the size of this bag when they went to a non-detachable strap, (which is still not corrected in any images.) Would someone with the original bag with the detachable strap measure it please?

The bag I had hold of had a non-detachable strap.
The other thing to be aware of, which I don't recall anyone mentioning, is that there is no padding at either end of the bag. This means that any lens or camera placed against thee side walls will have very little protection.
I was certainly not going to put an expensive lens against these walls!
At onepoint I had a downloaded pdf file from NG which had the correct sizes on it. It ws this that started me questioning the actual sizes. It also makes me wonder whether the sizes on their other bags are incorrect!
The bag I sent back had a letter with it explaining the problem - so hopefully they will also feedback to NG about the problem. COuld be interesting to see what they do about it.
But in essence; yes, the sizes as stated on 99.9% of the websites is wrong by my measurements (I've not checked the imperial sizes to see if they were incorrect - there may have been an error in the conversions by NG).
I am supprised that no-one has picked up on this yet?

Actually this was something that was discussed earlier in the thread. The small version of the bag has padding at the sides, but not the medium. My solution was put the pouch that comes in the bag at one end and use the spare divider at the other, providing at least basic padding. To me at least it is acceptable. If I'd wanted a bag with major league padding I'd have got another Crumpler or LowePro. Instead I wanted a nice looking bag that was light and easy to carry.

I recently picked up the Midi bag, which like the Medium is not padded on the ends. I too made some modifications to make it work for me. NG are neat bags, but they certainly could improved with a little designed work.

Nobody has mentioned doing it. Why would you bother? Isn't like its particularly bright or offensive?
