so when I shoot in raw (10d) what is the best procedure to convert so I can work with the file in PSE2, please give all steps, thanks, Ian.

1. Take CF memory card out of camera.
2. Stick it into CF card reader attached to PC.
3. With File Explorer, copy images from CF card to PC hard drive. Make note to self to make backups of these files.
4. After copying all the image files from card, open Canon FileViewer Utility program (or BreezeBrowser or any other program that can convert RAW to TIFF).
5. Point to folder where your RAW files are stored and select the ones you want to convert.
6. Convert RAW files to TIFF (8 bit) and save to another working folder. (How depends on converter software being used).
7. Exit out of converter program and open Photoshop Elements.
8. Open your working folder containing the converted image files.
9. Edit image files to your heart's content. Save finished edited image to yet another ("final") folder as JPEG. To keep "work in progress" file, resave TIFF file back to it's original folder, or, if using layers, save as PSD file.

Happy editing! :)

You can use the Canon raw converter software (File Viewer Utility) as described above, but there are better alternatives, such as CaptureOne DSLR (http://www.c1dslr.com) or BreezeBrowser (http://www.breezesys.com/).

PS Elements does not support 16-bit images, so 8-bit TIFF is the best format to use.
