Just got CS2 and have it installed but that is about. Assume it will let me install on one desktop and one laptop.

I disagree.

I think the OP is correct you can activate it twice.

Technically no.

Technically yes.

But when I installed it on my 3rd machine it hung, and I had to call Adobe and declare that it is to replace an installation of a machine I no longer own.

Read your license information.

You can go to Help/deactivate photoshop from this computer so you can move it to another computer.

Yes you can move it but the Op did not state that, his post read as if he wanted to install it in two machines at once, if he did not mean that then that is different. The fact that you may be able does not make it legal.

Straight from the License Agreement:

2.4 Portable or Home Computer Use. The primary user of the computer on which the Software is installed may install a second copy of the software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable computer or a Computer located at his or her home, providedthe Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer.

I have it installed on both my G5 and MacBook. I double checked with Adobe while calling them on another question and C/S said absolutely you can have it installed on a secondary computer that YOU use as long as you're only using the application on one computer at a time.

The fact that you may be able does not make it legal.

You are right, simply being able to do it is not what makes it legal. However, Adobe saying, "Yes you can" - now that is what makes it legal.

If you took the time to look at my other post you would not have jump to that conclusion!!! I procvided a link to about.com that explains the EULA for PSCS.

BTW I was only pointing out that If you nolonger need it on one computer you can deactivate it from the help section of the toolbar

I have it installed on my two desktops. If I am travelling I will go onto one of these and deactivate it and then install it on my laptop. When I return, I do the opposite. It works like a charm and have never had any troubles.

I wish that some of the other popular software packages would take the Adobe approach to this and let us install on two machines.

BUT - What if you install it on office computer & on your laptop to use when traveling or from home.
Many people do Not turn off office computer when leaving office, so you are in the middle of an edit & leave it on. Then you go home & turn on laptop, or get on train or plane & turn on laptop, and open PS to edit pictures. That looks as though you are using both at the same time.
That would be illegal as I read the license. But it is a common way to work.
And how could they tell if you have 2 versions open at once, esp if you are not connected to I'net at the time of use?

So deactivating is not an uninstall of the program, it simply turns off the ability to use it until turned back on?

CS2 allows for two machines...

How do you "deactivate"? and why would you need to? The program isn't alive... it can't tell how many pc's you have it running on. Just curious I guess. Anyhow, don't you have to call or email to get activation? You'd have to lie about the third.

see post #6 to deactivate.

Everytime you install PSCS you need to activate it via online or telephone. During the activation a key is install into your computer for that particular serial number. Adobe keeps tab on the number of activated keys so when you deactiate one key it leave a spare key for the next activation.
