crt monitor suggestions

Hello all,
One of my monitors blew out today so I need to buy a new one. I am looking at a LaCie 19 electon blue 1v or a Nec MultiSync FP912SB . but am open to suggestions. I am looking to spend between $300 and $400 US. So would you be so kind to give me some recomendations :wink:

You will have to check, but I believe the LaCie is the Mitsubishi NEC. Same-same, and both are built by NEC. The LaCie just has a different casing, and who knows, maybe it's tweaked a bit more by LaCie. Buy the one with the better price because what I hear is they are both good.

Otherwise I'm on CDS's side of the fence and don't know anything in that price range.

Sony Multiscan G420 is what is sitting on my desk. Hard to beat. Lots of features.

Confusing Hunh? :? I myself, having two Sony GDM-F520s, I am totally convinced they are the best, but mine cost around $1800 each.

I don't personally know, but am basing what I said about LaCie/NEC on what I picked up on our other common playground, FM. :)

Eric's idea sounds good, especially the NEC/Mitsubishi FP2141SB CRT paired with a Matrox card. I always harp on Matrox cards because they are the only manufacturer I know that is focused on the needs of the graphic/visual arts, have the commensurate quality and are wholy manufactured by Matrox. Most other cards are targeted toward the mass and gamers market and are built around a nVidia or ATI chip by third parties like Asus, Creative, Hercules or whoever. I have been using Matrox cards for over ten years and learned quite thoroughly that the graphics card is more important than the monitor. I say this because you can only see the capabilities and character of a monitor when it is connected to a top graphics card.

It is mostly misleading to look at monitors in a store because

1. the monitors have not been calibrated and/or set to common defaults,

2. you don't know the quality of the graphics card they are connected to, nor its settings for the corresponding monitor or even if all are connected to identical graphics cards,

3. even if all monitors are displaying the same graphic, you don't know if the monitor profile for all is the same.

So when you go in a store, no matter how many monitors are displayed, you can't really judge what you are seeing, and while all will look diffferent, you can't determine really where the differences are coming from.

Perhaps it would be more valid to call up a number of professional photo or graphics studios and ask what they use or recommend, but there are no guarantees there either, unless you get hold of a pro who is knowledgable. I have absolutely no hesitation in this regard because ultimately I want to get what I want, if it exists, and nothing less.

In Germany you will be able to get just about anything you can dream of, and at a good price if you take the trouble. You will get better prices for the graphics card in dollars than in Euro, but you will almost certainly have to get the monitor in Europe.

Yeah,. The first time I saw a good Sony .. I gad found the G400 19" apertutre grill for a steal as they had been discontued at Sam's club of all places. I bought it for my girlfreind for her birthday! :)

At the time I had Viewsonics BEST pro 21",. the P815.. (pre - "Perfect flat screen")

Well the Sony at 1/4 the cost I had paid juat a few years before for the Viewsonic,. totally blew the 21" away!

So I immediately found a perfect used G-500,. the 21" version.

When I decided it was time for a pair I looked around for another used deal, ..

AND I GOT ONE!

Instead of another G-500,. I found an FW900.... the 24" Flagship of the Sony fleet!

There perfect side by side,. the height is identical and vertical resolution.. (obviously the horixontal is larger on the 24" Widescreen!)

Anyway,. for me it's all Sony.

8) Didn't get much help here . But settled on a Mitsubishi DiamondPro 930SB. And for the first time saw the preference of a crt over a LCD. I thought my Mac 17" studio was the best I had seen and it is really good, but the DiamondPro is Now the best I've seen on my desktop. This is the first time I've been satisfied with my "calibrated" display , 2.2 gamma, 6500 temp. Low brightness. and the images look like what I want, ( except for my short comings as a photographer :? . )
Now the quandry as which to use as my viewer and the fact that I have my printer is set to print what I see on the LCD.
A happy ending. :)

hey CDS,is the G520 alot better? i can't do any post prosessing with
mine,it's to dark. i did all the calibration stuff with PS7, still not good.
i can't tell if a pic is accuratly exposed. i'm ready to calibrate it with
a HAMMER!

DELL monitors with Trintron Tubes. Priced well, and calibrate well. I have two 19" Dells on my work area.

The G-520 is a newer model of the same thing I have,. which is a used G-500. I have not used an "E" series myslef,. but I believe that the "G" series has both a higher resolution and dot pitch,. but it has an amazing amoutn fo adjustment controls as well.

I absolutley adore my G-500 and in fact every "G" I've seen has been stunning.
