Hey, if Nikon can do it (200-400mm) then why can't Canon do it better? I understand it would be a monster, but I don't have a problem with a big lens and a bigger lens because I'm not hand holding either way.

And for that matter, I want a 12-24mmL F/2.8 or f/4 so my zoom range is completely covered.

12-24 - 24-70 - 70-200 - 200-500

Thanks Canon, my bank account will hate you.

that would be an awesome lens... it would also be $10,000+, and would need a small ox team to move it around.

Howso? The Nikon isn't THAT big or doesn't cost that much. I mean, if Sigma can make a 300-800mm f/5.6 for $7,200 then Canon can surely make this lens for +/- $5,000.

Oh yeah, they could make one for it but, being Canon, they wouldn't sell one for it.

Then they'd charge you extra for the lens hood and a decent tripod bush

Well there's a big difference between an f/4 lens and an f/5.6 lens at these focal lengths

+/- $5000.

It would weight in at about 10 pounds and cost about $6-7K

May I ask why this would be preferable to the 500mm f/4L IS costing less and weighing less?

IMO, it would be a benefit for sports (motorsports, for example) where the action might be at varying distances without time to change lenses.

Have Fun,

A 200-500 to replace the 100-400 would be good enough for me. Too many people want pie in the sky lenses.

Ahh, I see.
To me this is handled readily with a second body with a lighter more pointable zoom.

The idea of trying to get an all in one package has always meant one tool that is not the best at anything.

When two tools can be the best at two things, for similar cost, and much more flexibility, then that's the direction I go.
This zoom lens just sounds a lot like an f-111 to me.

And Sprout, I'll repeat this question for another thread, how does a $6,000-$7,000 10 pound lens equate to a replacement for the lightweight affordable 100-400mm?

I don't know ask canon

Asking Canon would be futile - a 200-500 f/4 zoom will not replace the 100-400 f/4-5.6 zoom. It's conceivable that such a lens (or something like it) might find its way into the lineup, but not as a replacement. Two very different animals.

PS - I'd like one as well!

It doesn't, nor do I understand your comment. I was saying that a replacement for the 100-400 covering the 200-500/4.0-5.6 would be preferable to a 200-500/4 IS for me.

hey, isn't it interesting that now sigma has that 200-500mm f/2.8 EX?

They do ?

What shall we call it ?

D'ya think it'll ever replace the Canon 100-400 ?

Did you ever experience Deja Vous ?

Either replace the 100-400 with new IS, or make a new lens at 300-500... I'll be happy either way.
