Please forgive me my ignorance, and I know that this is a very common question, but I am trying to get a simple answer here... I used to be a Olympus E-20 man and shot RAW mostly, and converted it with Adobe Camera RAW conversion (something like that) with no problem. Now I am 10D man and I am confused. I still have Photoshop 7, which does not have an automatic converter as I suppose Photoshop 8 does. So what do I do to get my RAW images into Photoshop with the advantages of RAW format? And I do not want to buy more software. Please give me a straight answer. Thank you in advance.

I have tried it, and maybe not hard enough, but I get used to some adjustment options as I convert. This program just converts it, and I choose JPEG lowest compression, but than, what's the point, I could let camera do that, right?

You can download a free 30-day trial version of Capture One Limited Edition (C1LE). If you hold off a few days before doing so, you'll still have it on Valentine's Day. It's an excellent program with plenty of adjustment, and it allows you to save in TIFF format.

Well use the highest quality settings, i took the largest JPEG from the camera and compaired it to a RAW, same picture, settings location lighting...everything. The RAW when converted to JPEG on my computer was much finer.

Mike,
Keep shooting RAW,.
you can do a few things software wise.
If yo use the Canon utitlity and want to keep all the data in your raw files,. you will need to save as Tiff,. not jpeg.
You can try either "Breezebrowser" or "Capture1" Both excellent,. and both have there merits though C1 is really the "king"
If you don't want to upgrade to PS-8 (cs) then you can search for a copy of the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in for PS 7.01...
Adobe stopped seeling it,,. but many people have upgraded to PS-8 and might be willing to part with the plug-in. (in fact I might)
The RAW tools in PS are great,. I really liked the 7.01 ACR plug-in,. but I'm liking PS-8 more! :)

I have "Adobe Camera Raw", it does not seems to be recognize files from Canon 10D though...
I guess I will be using Canon's utitlity that came with a camera, but again, I do not see any adjustments there, so it is just a mechanical conversion rather than adjust as you convert as Camera RAW does...
Thank you.

Personally, I always convert from RAW to 16-bit per channel TIF. The only times I use JPEG is when I need something small to place on a web site, or to email to somebody. But then, I get the JPEG from the TIF.
If you convert from RAW to JPEG, then right there you have lost tiny bits of detail that you can never get back.

The Canon RAW converter can 100% duplicate (or change) the in camera adjustments with one major exception: In addition to JPEG outputs, you can create 8bit or 16bit TIFF images.
My old workflow was to convert all RAW images to TIFF's (with 0 sharpness, contrast, sharpness etc) then adjust using Photoshop Elements. Once finished, I would then save as JPEG's from PS-Elements.
Now, I use Capture One. I adjust Grey Balance and Exposure and produce TIFFs. Final sharpening and any cloning (or other advanced features) are done in Photoshop Elements. When finished, I then batch convert all the TIFFs to JPEGs. One side note: If I am doing any "advanced work" in Photoshop, I have C1 produce a full size TIFF and do final scaling after I do the "advanced work". If not, then I scale the C1 output to final image size when producing the TIFF.
The main reason for my two step process for *all* images is that I like the Photoshop "Unsharp mask" better than the C1 sharpening too.

CDS,
Quick Capture 1 question. When converting to Tiff, can you import the EXIF info also? I seem to be loosing it when I convert from RAW. If I ask for a Jpeg as well as a Tiff, the info shows in the Jpeg....got me going nuts.
I just started playing whith RAW and C1 and love the results!
Many thanks,
Ian

Maybe I missed something, but what is wrong with the FREE Canon FVU utility? Loads of pre convertion control and the option of output in up to 16bit TIF. Its a bit slow but it does a reasonable job and its FREE and is shipped with the 10D.

Hack is to make the Adobe 7 Camera Raw plug in work on the 10D. If you have CS the Raw converter works with the 10D in any case.
