The 30D is very nice. Starting a thread like this will just further your suffering.

I think the ducks can sense when a Canon user is coming. They will be there waiting for you.

OK, I admit to being clueless. What's this thing with the ducks?

I wouldn't know, in over the 2 and almost 1/2 years of having a camera (both point and shoot and SLR :)) I still haven't shot a duck. I shall have to do that soon.

I used to shoot ducks, but they were'nt big enough and didn't taste that good - too much of a wild taste!! I like geese better because they're easier to hit.
On a serious note, I like geese better because they are more majestic when swimming by, and they often go by in pairs, which makes a nice composition. There is a large city park across the street from where I live with three man-made lakes. The resident Canada goose population don't seem to mind getting their picture taken, as they are relatively tame. One can easily get withing 20 feet of them, and if you have food - well, sometimes it's time to run away. Just leave them alone when they have goslings.
I know how you feel about waiting for your 30D - it's very frustrating looking at something and thinking, "that would make a nice shot", and can't.
Hang tough.

Thanks. I was down by the lake and observed this male malard doing his courtship dance around the ladies... Sure enough the waiting paid off as he suddenly spread his wings to show off his warez...

It's kind of a joke that you must go out and take a picture of a duck with your new camera gear. I think it's because ducks are kind of a popular subject among new photographers especially wildlife photographers.
Household pets make a suitable fallback option if you can't find a duck nearby.
I've also heard it said that taking a picture of a duck with your newly aquired gear is good luck. I've never done it personally though so YMMV.;)

Another way of 'testing' your new 'pride and joy' is to take a picture of the box it came in - or a picture of a duck sitting on the box with your cat in the background... :):)

That's a difficult one Kev., I mean, multi-tasking for a Duck or Box shooter?

Ooh! If I could only hook that up!!!
I don't think my cat would sit still for very long if a duck were in the room. I don't think I'd have any problem getting her near it though.

Well not really, the box is fairly inanimate and the cat could be asleep, so it's only the duck to contend with really - Just the DOF to get right though... ;)

I think you're right. I do believe those guys rely on luck a great deal like that.
Maybe the Duck could be confined to a bucket for the duration of the shoot? On DOF I think we can just go with it. Either the fuzzy bloke-eh'd? look wide open or the clearer backdrop'd Ducks a** look of an almost closed aperture.

70-200 2.8L IS USM. The stupid thing was that I also shot this at 3200ISO... In any event it came out good and I'm happy ;-)
