Just got the BG-ED grip for my 10D and of course, of all days, I don't have my camera w/ me to put it on (at work). I didn't get the extra battery because the guys wanted to sell me an off-brand for $45 which I thought was a little steep. I see the Canon one for $49.95 on Samy's site (the guy at Samy's quoted me $65).

I'm sure I can go back and tell him I see it on their site for $50, but how much should an off-brand cost? If it's close, I'll just pay the extra for the Canon.

BTW, it doesn't matter between the 511 or 512 battery, correct? I don't know which came with my 10D and I don't know what the differences are.

i managed to find a seller on Ebay that was a fraction of the cost of a canon battery and alot cheaper than any other generic battery anywhere else....you could probably buy 4 of these batteries to one of the canon's...

i actually got a dud battery but the seller was very quick to send out another....even if the battery dies out in 12 months time it will still be worth it based on its price.

No Ebay hassles. Great service. I ordered 2 sets on a Sunday. They shipped them 9:30am on Monday morning. Great tracking. Great followup. Quick efficient service.

I would, however, mate your Canon battery with another Canon. I prefer to keep my batteries a matched set. No particular reason other than it just makes sense. I don't think it'd hurt anything though to mix different batteries. These have a different (higher) mAh rating than the Canon batteries.

Like Jim, I've also bought batteries from amondotech, but I actually purchased them through their eBay store (hey, I didn't know any better at the time!). I second what Jim wrote...great tracking, great follow-up and quick, efficient service. I can't imagine paying Canon's prices when there are tons of much less expensive alternatives.

I'll keep them for reference. I want to get another battery for my Sony video camera. I'll take your advice and get another Canon as I am kind of in the same thinking. I'll certainly order from them next time though.

Dude,. you can buy 4 of the other battereis for less than the Canon??

Why get another Canon,. get 4 of the "reasonably priced" batts,. and have two pairs for the Big Ed and leave the Canon for single Batt use when traveling lite!

I got cheaper 3rd party batteries. Cheaper, similar quality, more power. Seems like a simple decision to me.

Cyber,

I think I am gonna do that. I called up Samy's and the $50 for the Canon BP-511 is only for web orders. I'm gonna order the batteries from AMONDOTECH as RFMSports mentioned. I'll get two or four batteries. :)

Thanks, guys.

Hi kafene:
I post a similar message late last year; here's the link:

I have since bought two generic batteries from ebay (homenext), $10 each, for use in my BG-ED3 with no problem so far. Hope this helps.

For me generic batteries have been great out of the box, and their life decreased right after that. The battery I bought a year after acquirung my D30 already has less life than the original Canon battery I got with the camera. I rcently got a battery from Wal Mart that still worked well in the cold so it may have promise. I'll see how it ages.

Not the cheapest but less than Canon and much more capacity. I use a lot of their batteries in everything from my cameras to my GPS, to my Marine handheld.
