View Full Version : Formula Ford Festival, Oct 22 Brands Hatch...Wet Wet Wet

Decided at 7am that the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch would be a fantastic idea. It was, until it started raining and didn't stop for most of the day.
I didn't stay right until the end as there was only so much rain and Formula Ford I could take.
Had a few issues today, the dreaded Error99 popped up once and wouldn't go away, to the point that I nearly switched to my 'backup' 20D, but removing the grip and re-attaching it cured it. Then it said my batteries were flat! ARGH! Luckily I have about 10 batteries so that wasn't so bad.
Anyway here are 2 shots taken from Druids. 20D, Sigma 120-300 + 1.4xTC, EXIFs are there to keep the most anal of shooters happy. These have literally been ripped off of the card and inserted roughly onto my web space, pausing only for a poke of reszing, a jab of unsharp mask and a left-hook in the form of a border and branding to make sure that no theiving Mapgies make off with my bling....

I'm off for a shower, then the pub for a gallon of premium lager, more inane babble in a few hours time.

Looks thoroughly miserable, but nicely done all the same Dave.
I'll post some shots up from the tropical heat of Croft, just to warm your cockles, so to speak :D

Mmm nice! I spent most of Sunday in bed and the watching the Grand Prix, eat a fat roast dinner yum and then down the pub for a few :) Got back and just finished uploading my photos from yesterdays HSCC @ Silvy.
Anyway one good thing about a dull rainy day is that it will help you get through the nasty Druids fencing. On a sunny day it's impossible.
How was the racing? Many spectators?

True about the fence Az.
Was Safety-cars-a-go-go due to the weather. Were some fairly serious looking smacks in the FF races and the Pinto 2000 Supersports things. Weren't as many spectators as I had thought, the weather was massively gash.

Where abouts did your Error 99 hit Dave? I got one that wouldn't go away until I took the batteries out as well, that hit me stood on Hailwood's Hill. 20D as well. *Scratches chin*
Shots look fine, especially for the conditions.

Top of Druids. Tried all sorts. TC off, lens off, cleaned contacts (wasn't raining at this point) argh. No joy. Batteries out, no joy.
Unscrewed grip, re-fitted, job done, didn't do it again.
I should imagine they are ok, I've done plenty wet weather shooting now

Hi Dave a couple of good pics again (grr, lol) you may have already answered my question in the above post, but where abouts were you standing at Brands for these 2 pics?
Thanks
Allen

It wasn't moisture in my case either because I didn't get more than a few spots on anything in the wet morning, and this happened in the afternoon.
I did Lens off, cleaned contacts, other lens on, batteries out, back in, fixed. Strange things these cameras.:)

Outside of Druids from behind the Uber Death Star Fence.
When it's overcast it makes shooting through it a lot easier, bright sunlight just makes it impossible.
I think I'm going to skive off work for the rest of the day now, I might get some photos up from home...muhahaha

Mine were all covered up so who knows, just one of those 'catch all' Error99 scenarios designed to make you twitch.

Andy Rouse (Camaro) and Alan Minshaw (Ford Malibu) having a Love In up the top of Druids.

That Malibu hasn't raced for 7 years apparently, and was right on the pace straight away. For such a massive tank, it's daft fast.

Mine just made me slightly annoyed as it decided to mess me about in one of the two sessions that day where I actually had to be doing something. Hey ho.
That one you've just posted looks mighty wet, fine job just standing around in that weather.:)

It stops me going mad at the weekend.
I have the luxury of a spare body, for those moments when you actually need one. Was a good investment I think.

Hello Dave. Nearly didn't recognise you under all the rain gear. It was the homemade lens cover that gave it away! ;)
Nice shots at Druids.
I got a few of these myself ... http://davegalpin.fotki.com/events/motorsport/brands_hatch/2006/formula-ford-festival/img7012.html

A few more.
The now quasi-legendary "TV Flap" was open at Clearways again, meaning shooting through the fence.
Parade Lap, not too much spray..

Up to race speed and it was a bit dodgy as the rain got heavier

When you have a windscreen, a roof, doors and 4WD like these boys though, it doesn't really matter!

Back up to Druids for this one, during a break in proceedings the Ford RS Team demo'd their new Fiesta Super 1600 nutter thing.

the rubber band rocks, now I have revealed my identity (Sigma 120-300, Union Flag on the lens hood, L-disguise rubber band) I need to work on a disguise.

Some great shots Dave, in pretty appauling weather conditions. Some superb stuff on your website, particularly of the Formula Ford's.
I particularly like IMG 7012 on page 3 of the website - you've gone for a very artistic type of shot and it's nice to see something a little different from you :p ;) .
Cheers,
Simon.
